Expand instant replay?

I like the idea of a little more instant replay in baseball. And honestly, I think it's as easy as following the NFL's model. Give each manager 2 challenges. If he wins both, he gets a third.

You CANNOT challenge: Balls and strikes (except for a check swing), balls IN the park that were called foul (because it would be a dead play)...and I think that's about it. Or, a trapped ball that was called an out (because runners may not have advanced as they should have). Everything else would be fair game.

Just my 2 cents.

John Lackey 2010

Being the top SP on the free agent market, and therefore, likely to do be overpaid, where do you see JohnJohn landing?
I do like Lackey, but he's getting a little older, and has had some injury issues the last two years.

I'm not sure he will go to a team like the Nats unless the really show him the money.

I think he will either stay with the Angels, or, for Christsakes, sign with the Yankees, who have no issues overpaying injury prone pitchers.

Regardless, he is an MLB ace, and a fantasy #2.

I think the Angels let Vlad and Choney go, and retain the services of World Series Game 7 Winner John Lackey.

AL/NL Managers of the Year 2009

Both will be announced today at 2 PM. I'm not predicting who will win, this is just who I'd vote for myself. For the AL, I'd vote for Ron Gardenhire. He did a great job juggling all the injuries & led the Twins to a great September push to the postseason. For the NL, I have to go for Jim Tracy for the late season push as well.

Roy Halladay Offseason Adventures

Okay it seems that everyone believes that Doc will be traded if not this off season sometime this year before he becomes a FA. Now the question is where can he go.

I'm now assuming that any team that trades for him would like to sign him to a long term contract. I will assume he will be looking for a 6 year 120M year type of contract, maybe a bit shorter, but basically I would assume about a 20M a year type of contract.

What teams have that type of cash, are in a win now mode and have talents to trade to the blue jays.

In no real order

Yankees - They have the money, there no doubt about that. They have no problem making the big splash. Cashman has been agressive in getting elite talent in the last off season, and Halladay is the elite talent.

Cons - Will the Blue Jays trade in the division. Would Cashman trade the young arms for Halladay, he kept them for Johan and CC, they might be okay waiting to see if he a FA in 2011 and court him then. I also believe the 2011 Pitching FA class has a few other big names as well.

Boston - Beckett is in the last year of his contract, so locking up another Ace would be a high boon for Boston. Money isn't a huge issue for boston as well. But the same problems as the Yankees, would the Blue Jays trade in the division.

Angels - Losing lackey might put pressure to get a new Ace. Angels while not the highest spending team do have a decent sized payroll. Vlad coming off the books frees up some cash as well. I believe they have a good farm system and have pieces to move for Halladay. Out of the division I see them as a strong players for Halladay

Phillies - Coming close to winning a WS. They have a current Ace of Lee and pairing him up with Halladay with the bats they currently have is a great combo. They have the young talent to trade since they were able to keep most of them in that Lee trade. They have Draebek which is suppose to be a crown jewel of young pitching arms. They payroll was currently very close to the luxury tax and I'm not sure they want to go over it. The Phillies might believe their rotation is fine with Hamels, Happ and Lee with Blaton and maybe Drekbek. Lee is also a FA after this year and they may focus on spending the money on resigning Lee instead, but the Philies are a real shot as well I think.

Mets - They made the big splash with Johan, I guess they can do it again, but I don't think they have the talent to pull off the trade and this time I think there are more players in the Doc sweepsteaks then there was in the Johan one. Mets to me seem like a outside shot, but they do need to make the splash.

Texas - If they weren't changing owners I would of put them on trying to make a move, but with new ownership coming in, I don't think the old owners would look to add 120M payroll on.

Cubs - They should be intrested, they need Starting pitching. I just haven't heard much from them on this, I know nothing on their farm system.

Det - Same as the Cubs. Both longshots as of now, but in the mix.

I do not think any other team really would be in the hunt.

Texas Rangers offseason thread

Couple of rumors flying around out there:

1. Rangers are showing a ton of interest in Vlad Guerrero whom may receive an incentive laden deal and I believe this ballpark would do wonders for Vlad's upside to receive a larger contract..

QUOTE

The 34-year-old and the Rangers appear to be a good match, considering Texas' need for right-handed power and Vlad's career numbers at Rangers Ballpark (.394/.471/.705).

2. Marlon Byrd looks to be on the way out, as much as the Rangers would love to keep him around he may just be a little too expensive. He's a great locker room teammate whom would do nothing but improve any team he goes to.. potential landing places: Cubs.

3. Cubs and Rangers in talks about a potential Milton Bradley trade.. With the Rangers current change to a patient-hitting, on base style of play he could be a perfect fit in this system but his baggage would be a huge ?

4. Rangers are keeping tabs on John Lackey, the only setback to this actually happening is the sell of this team so if you are a Rangers fan, lets hope that the sell happens sometime around Thanksgiving which was previously rumored.

5. Ben Sheets is still on the Rangers radar and I believe this deal still gets done. He's been in Texas throughout his rehab and had already had a deal in place before his surgery so I believe the Rangers come down this path once again and gets this deal done..

6. Potential moves of CJ Wilson and Neftali Feliz to the starting rotation has been floating around, which would deeply hamper the Rangers bullpen but if they can be as solid in the starting rotation as they were in the bullpen, they would definitely be late round fliers as they would man the #4-5 spots of the rotation.

Boston Redsox Offseason thread

Here's a list of a few things that have happened this offseason:

- Acquired Jeremy Hermida for left-handers Hunter Jones and Alvarez
- Exercised $7.7 million option on Victor Martinez
- Declined team options on Jason Varitek and Alex Gonzalez; Varitek exercises his $3 million player option
- Signs Tim Wakefield to a 2 year contract

Feel free to add anything i've missed here.

Now, do they try and re-sign Bay? Go after Holliday? A. Gonzo trade rumors?

They absolutely need a big bat in the middle of that line-up and I'm not sure if Bay is the answer

Looks like they'll stick with Jed Lowrie at SS...

Could use another arm in the rotation as well...

Offseason General Health Updates

As we look forward to 2010, let's keep an on eye on the recovery of a few notable players from 2009. For ex., ...

RW Headlines, 11/10:
Conor Jackson is batting .368/.519/.561 with five doubles and two homers through 57 at-bats in the Dominican Winter League.
Jackson was limited to 30 major league games in 2009 due to a battle with Valley Fever. "It’s going great so far, no setbacks whatsoever, and from the baseball side of it I feel like my old self again," he wrote in an e-mail. "This was definitely the best decision for me to come down here." The D'Backs appear likely to tender him a contract this offseason.
Source: Arizona Republic
