Just wanted to get some general discussion on the top prize of this year's international market. From a fangraphs article posted today:

Now that Strasburg-mania is cooling down, the next top amateur player will find out his destination over the next month. 16-year-old shortstop Miguel Angel Sano has been profiled heavily over the past few months. At 6’3” Sano is expected to move to a corner as he ages. His bat appears to be special and has drawn some comparisons to former shortstops like Gary Sheffield.

Most of Sano’s value comes from his age and projected bat. Defensively he has a strong arm, but the athleticism required to stick at shortstop is probably going to be lost with a few more inches, assuming he isn’t physically maxed out.

http://www.fangraphs...guel-angel-sano

The Pirates have largely been held to be the front-runners (BP article from a few days back) for his services and the Tony Sanchez selection will likely continue to fuel the speculation that they're saving their dollars for the international market.

16 year old Dominican player with AMAZING bat speed, he is 6'2 190 pounds, they say he will prob. move to either 3rd base or LF, rumor has it the pirates took C Tony Sanchez (i thinks his name?) in the first round to clear money to take sano. Some people compare his bat speed to Gary Sheffield. Good arm, good speed, just heard he and wagner got signed by the cards!

What ya think?

Also Wagner Mateo seems pretty good too.

As reported on RW, Sano is now a....Twin!

Pittsburgh Post Gazette Blog reports signing details.

So the Pirates went cheap in the Rule IV draft so they could spend internationally...and whiff on Sano. While from the blog reports, it doesn't look like the Pirates were completely to blame on this, this has really got to hurt the hardcore fans who were waiting for this signing.

As for the Twins, a much needed IF signing. Likely he's at least 3-4 years away, but given the rather small cost by MLB salary standards, a nice future move by a spend-thrift organization.

Added bonus - he becomes draft eligible next year for my AL-only league, too. Wohoo!

Football PPR 2014 - Cutler, L. Bell, R. Jennings, Dez, Marshall, V-Jax, Justin Hunter, Quick, Rudolph, HOU DST. D-Thomas fan club member.
Dynasty 2014 - Romo, E. Lacy, Gore, T. Gerhart, C-Michael, J. McKinnon, D-Train, K. Allen, R. White, M. Evans, D. Adams, B. Quick, J. Graham, L. Green, HOU DST.

Been a blast everyone - take care, and remember to abide by the CoC, and to help your fellow community out - it's what's made the Forum community great!

P.S. My passion is primarily FBB - you'd LOL at my football track record!

he's going by sano, not jean

http://www.baseballa...ospects/?p=7406

given his age, there isn't much we know yet..........very talented, big upside, power projections good/great, likely to move to 3B as he adds more bulk.......too early to know much beyond that

Yes I know he's only 17 but, I read an article that said he is doing tremendous as of now and he compares to Evan Longoria. I hope he stays in the infield,He has not shown great power for his age. I have 2 questions, does he have good speed, and when will he make his debut.

"He has not shown great power for his age"

Is this serious? He's 17 for God's sake.. What exactly IS great power for a 17 year old? and he JUST turned 17 a month ago.. I mean, are you trying to free up a spot for him in your lineup now or what? He's not going to be called up until 2013 at the earliest.. And showing good speed for a 16/17 year old does not necessarily translate into good speed as a 22 year old. Right now he's like 6'4" but skinny, but expend him to fill out that frame. In other words, a LOT will happen over the next 3/4 years to determine what kind of player he's going to be, you'll just have to wait.

His Dominican Rookie League debut 2 for 4 with a HR and a 3B with 2 K's.

He has a ton of talent, they have him listed at 6'3" 195, which is a decently filled frame. But with how young he is you can only expect him to get bigger. Look at Heyward's growth this year (not 100% off hand but I'm pretty sure he grew 1" and 25 lbs) and he just turned 20 Sano just turned 17 2 weeks ago.

He just turned 17 so I would assume maybe 3 to 4 years. Twins develop their prospects though and take their time

Honestly, too early to project. Not worried about the K's considering his age, that's normal. The impressive thing is he actaully is walking a good amount for somebody his age, and is showing that plus power

Also, not sure if he'll be a big SB type guy, he's already a big dude, and he'll continue to fill out as he ages

FWIW, he whiffed 9 times in his first 6 games and just 3 times in his last 7. Early jitters perhaps, for such a young'un?

Really tough to project this early, but I'd be willing to bet the power is very real. He's got a powerful frame already, and has a great-looking swing. I'll be watching this kid's growth with interest.

Are you seriously projecting stats for once he makes it to the big leagues? lol He's 17, it's not like it's around the corner. Making projections now is more than pointless.

Hot international signee of the Twins is starting to earn the right to his own thread, so I'm startin' one!

First 74 PAs with the Elizabethton Twins of the Rookie Appalachian League, after a slow start:

.310/.342/.592 for a .934 OPS, with 3 HRs, 5 doubles, 3 triples, 11 ribbies, 12 runs, and 2 steals. And in his last 10 games it's .357/.386/.762 with an OPS of 1.148.

The only downside is a 22/4 K/BB, but hey, the kid just turned 18. Long way to go, but definitely a young player to keep an eye on. Lots of upside here, Sano has raw talent to burn!
