Anyone know why The Cubs 2011 first round pick (9th overall) has yet to play in the minors?

He's in extended spring training. Playing pretty well, heard about some maturity issues though. Not a big issue for a guy like him to be still be in extended ST. Bubba and a couple other guys are doing that as well...

He sounds like a total punk from a few of the stories out there, I guess he hit a bomb Vs the Angels in extended spring training and look a real nice long gaze at it and then took forever to get around the bases. One of the Angels coaches said, "RUN THE BASES!!" while he was watching it, apparently he watched it so long it made Justin Upton look like Joey Votto after a bomb.

When Baez crossed home plate he said, "I can do whatever the F I want", which lead to benches clearing, no altercations - but he certainly isn't making friends.

Found some "unofficial" extended spring training stats on Baez.

(12 GAMES - 44 PA) – 3 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR, 13 RBI, 9 R, 0/13 BB/K, 3 SB (0 CS)
DEFENSE: 6 ERRORS

I wonder what would be the most comparable minor league level in terms of competition. 3 doubles 3 triples and 3 HRs.  Looks like hes really driving the ball.  I also read that he hit for the cycle already.

extended spring training is comparable to a highschool all star game?? I would have to think the level of competition is much higher than that.

So it isn't even major college level, yet most major college level programs won't have more than a few players drafted. Makes sense.

Be will to wager more players from major college progams get drafted than players in short season ball or rookie ball every make it to low A ball. And that where almost all the players in extended spring ball are headed.

The fact of the matter is, people in extended spring training are getting paid to play baseball. People in high school all star games and college aren't. To even compare them is asinine.

The average college player sucks with the wooden bat. There is a big difference between extended spring training and college, let alone high school. There are certainly some raw players in extended spring training, but the talent is there. The pitchers also have much nastier stuff than most college pitchers.

Especially in the velocity department, not as much though in command and more refined secondary offerings - if your referring to quality D1 ball, and not a CC in North Dakota.

This guy has absolutely ridiculous power. He hit a 420ish FT HR last night and he followed that up by hitting one being estimated between 430-450FT today. That is Stanton type power.

Got a chance to see him in person in Peoria. Wow. Kid is a natural hitter. Definitely got a little of Sheffield in his swing. Fun to watch. He's very aggressive at the plate, but the patience should come with age.

Between Castro, Rizzo, and Baez the Cubs should have a pretty awesome infield for years. I would imagine Baez will move to third if he can't cut it at short.

Another 400+ ft blast and his 5th SB of the season. He's also gotten a lot of praise from a few different scouts on his play at SS. His value would skyrocket if he had a decent chance of sticking at SS.
