Hunter and James have pretty much the same build... they're both "change of pace guys", yes?  If so, won't they be competing for the same carries once Hunter is back?

What do you think the SF backfield will look like next season?  Hunter and James are both on the wire in my keeper league... just trying to figure out if one is worth the investment.
hunter is more built, hes shorter but also bulkier.
I dont think james is going to be a feature back anytime in the near future. hunter is the heir apparent to gore, but that achilles tear is worrisome.

I think everyone in this thread except for me is underestimating the upside of a player whose name is Lamichael James.   This guy is going to be elite.

In my keeper league we can pick up one free agent to keep for $1 dollar.  So if a guy is drafted and cut and then picked you cannot keep him, its only someone who went undrafted during the draft and never picked up during the season.  In week 17 I stashed James and am keeping him as my $1 dollar keeper next year.  I think he has a lot of talent and with Gore's age and wear, he could be in for a big role next season.

$1 Keeper is good value no doubt. His ceiling is as high as anyone. I have my doubts for the near future due to the conservative offense he's in, but he'll get an opportunity.

This is a bold statement. Most people in this thread agree he has pretty high upside. Most people in this thread have said before that James should be owned in dynasties and looked very hard at in keepers after Hunter's injury.

But the fact is, SF has two backs ahead of him on depth chart when they're healthy. and while Gore is aging, he still has some life left, and Hunter looked great (better than Gore actually) before the achilles tear.

LMJ is viewed as a change of pace back in SF for now and I really doubt this changes in the near future UNLESS Hunter cannot come back from the injury. Also he hasnt really shown much on third downs in terms of blocking, although Gore is arguably a top 5 pass-blocker at RB in the league, so it's understandable Niners want Frank blocking in those situations.

Kid's got a very bright future down the road but he won't be getting full-time carries anytime soon. And the offense just isnt open enough for him to be very valuable besides the rushing (like, say, Sproles is).

James' value completely depends on how Hunter comes back next year from his Achilles.  WIth the number of players who have come back from Achilles problems recently I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be fine, of course everyone is different and those are tough for RBs.

Hunter has the inside track for the lead back duties when Gore does move on(won't be this year) so next year he will be third on the chart.  This could all change based on Hunters injury but the way I look at it he will have to do a lot to jump Hunter for lead back duties.

Also, couple of observations just in case anyone is interested :)

The guy runs with some authority, definitely didnt expect that. He breaks some tackles and doesnt wussyfoot around much. Watching him in pac12 where most of his runs would be on the edge, outside, definitely came as a surprise that with his body frame he's able to run hard in the NFL. His lower body is nowhere that of Hunter or Gore, but he's stronger than he looked at Oregon

On a less great note, his vision has been a bit disappointing to me. I hope it can get corrected as he learns the playbook and SFs linemen big bodies' capabilities... but he's gotta utilize blocker better as well as choosing the right pathing depending on situations. Or at least I expected him to be better at it.

Again his name is Lamichael James, what part of that don't you understand?
