Youre giving him far too much credit.
Maybe. But getting rid of paying a 32-34 year old shortstop 22 million dollars a year where he might barely play 130 games a year at this rate and hit .280/.340 with limited power is genius if you think about it long term. I'm sure he recognized that the team was not built to win until Reyes was that old and taking up that much payroll.
Getting rid of Johnson and Mark is jut gravy. They got a really good return and then flipped Escobar for a solid return as well.
The problem with that logic is that he signed all those deals that and I don't think that team is built to win in 3-4 yeara. Stanton is likeoy out when his contracts up and they've got no other building block.

How many shortstops had a better 2012 than Jose Reyes?
This really doesn't matter. The Marlins weren't going to be winning any time soon, so why spend that amount of money on a player, when he can be traded for some prospects, and be replaced in a platoon. In terms of fantasy (roto) Rollins was #1 and Jeter was #2 followed by Reyes, H2H points Reyes was #1. In terms of WAR, Zobrist, Rollins, and Desmond ranked higher than Reyes. Zobrist didn't play there for a full year, but both Rollins and Desmond did.
I went over this several times in the Stanton thread, the team that they are putting out there as of right now (including Stanton even though he is on the D.L.), isn't that much different than what the total stats that were put up in 2012 when Stanton is healthy.
Picture this, say that 2012 trade didn't happen, and say Reyes was having another great year, do you still see the Marlins making a play-off run? I didn't think so. They won 69 games last year with that team, so why not deal them and save some money. They perhaps could have received more in return, but we honestly don't know that. We don't know what other teams offered the Marlins, or if any of them even did. Reyes has had an injury tag on him, same with Johnson along with a declining skill set, Bonifacio isn't exactly anything that can't be replaced from a call up, and Buehrle is a nice pitcher to to help solidify some holes in a rotation. None of these players that were dealt were players you build a franchise around, much less a group of players that could make a play off run.

Oh also what makes anyone think a no trade clause is something loria will do? He wouldn't for any of these players going as far as to tell reyes he should look to buy a house in the are because they were keeping him only a short while befoee trading him. Getting away from the reyes pissing match, loria is a liar and a sneak that much is widely known after his most recent move they will have to overpay to get anyone. Market rate isn't an option. On top of that, the no trade clause defies the marlina business model. Spend money. Win for a year kr two. Fire sale assets. That will be ths pattern in Miami as loria is all about maximizing the sollars while having others (mlb tax payers) subsidize his ventures.

the marlins outfield is starting to look pretty solid, as is their middle of the order. Ozuna, ruggiano, stanton... not bad. I wonder what happens with pierre when stantons hammy is all better.

I like their OF building blocks but their division is so tough and only getting better. I don't see them making the playoffs this decade; the Mets are a very decent 3rd place team and Philly has plenty of money to rebuild in the next few years

Lets not also overlook the issue of the fanbase. Loria has done a great job running fans off, from the moves he and the front office have made to suing fans etc they are doing a great job keeping everyone happy. Considering his team plays in the 8 largest metro in the country, the fact they consistently have the attendance issues they do speaks volumes about how that team is viewed. The recent move, doesnt help at all.
Baseball Prospectus had a great piece on their attendance issues: http://www.baseballp...articleid=20467

Their OF has a solid future with Ozuna, Yelich, and maybe Stanton. He obviously wants to leave, the only question is if they deal him before he gets expensive through arbitration. Unfortunately, they don't have much else. Morrison and Brantly are okay, and Fernandez will highlight their rotation. They have some building blocks, but just not enough to believe they will be competitive soon.

A team this stinky its going to be a long road back, esp. considering how hard it will be to lure top talent there, given the lies Loria tells.

Theyve never been this far out before. Uncharted territory in terms of the collection they have put together. It would be one thing if it was a true youth movement but theres so much old, crap, on the roster.

Just caught wind on the Marlins telecast that OF Christian Yelich had a monster 5 hit homer two triple game at AA. If you guys think Ozuna is good just wait till this kid gets his shot. Marlins future OF is looking very bright.
