In an AL Only League he might provide some value. He has decent pop and will even get you a handful of bags. Everyone in the world will be all over the Wil Myers Hype Machine so that will provide some cover to Joyce and bring his price way down. I know he sucks against lefties but he KILLS righties and could probably be had for NEXT TO NOTHING. He could be a nice value play.

What do people think?

Matt Joyce will definitely be a value in an AL-Only league.  I have been on his bandwagon ever since he got traded to the Rays, but I already jumped off jumped off of it this year.  Wil Myers hype train will go crazy, but it's not just him...Kelly Johnson is also going to see time in the outfield and they still have Ryan Roberts.  So once Myers gets called one, you can guarantee that on an average day...Zobrist, Jennings and Myers will be in the lineup.  So then it becomes a mix match of Joyce, Roberts and Johnson.

Matt Joyce will still hit for power, I don't think we will ever see him steal as many bags as he did in 2011.  But most of the things that made his breakout from 2011 happen, didn't change in 2012...he just suffered another injury that more than likely ruined his second half.

So Joyce, as you said, should play against all righties and sit against lefties.  But with all the potential options, he may see a cut in playing time more than usual.  Also, you still have to factor Brandon Guyer into the equation...I wouldn't completely write him off either.

Is Joyce the everyday RF? Is he in danger of getting a few days off here and there with his bat not doing much?

I streamed Joyce in my AL only league today.  He is following similiar trends as he has the last few years.  Getting hot around this time.  Then he usually goes on a prolong hot streak and then tanks after May.  I am going to ride him out through May and see if he follows the same course.  Career .350 hitter with a 1.070 OPS in May in 172 at bats.  Gets some meatball RHP coming up, Mendoza tomorrow, Santana the next day, then Jeff Francis @Coors (will likely sit), but then Chatwood and Garland.  For someone who lost Giancarlo this guy is a good add through May.  Ride the hot streak, thank me later!

Very true. I posted this in the Week 5 Waiver thread, but here is his stats in May. He OWNS it.

He sits against lefties but the Rays Matt Joyce is starting to warm up (4 H, 3 BB, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 6 R in last 3 games) and May is his month.

In his career he has hit .320/.410/.610 with 17 HR and 51 RBI and 49 R in 258 AB's for the month of May.

In 2011 he went .414/.470/759  in May.

In 2012 he went .282/.425/.489 with 4 Hr and 19 RBI in May.

In short...Matt Joyce owns May and he is starting to rake right as the month turns.

I'm buying.

His career OPS vs lefties is less than 600. He is a matchup lay and perfect platoon OF to have on your bench. Love him.

Hamstring tightness. They're calling it a precautionary move though.

Rays face all righty starters next week ... does Madden pinch hit for him late in games if a lefty comes in outta the pen?

Depends on the score. When they're down late in the game then he will. But he should see enough AB next week.

Theoretically he'll start all 7 games because its all righties right? Is his hammy still an issue? Maybe 5-6 starts? Tough call for weekly leaguers even with the full slate of righties

good point there about using caution, given the hammy tenderness

In my daily league I'm able to cycle Matt Joyce and Nate Mclouth and pretend my outfield doesn't suck.

Thanks Rotoworld!
