Profootballtalk.com reports that the Raiders are considering releasing Dominic Rhodes.
Somewhat surprising because he received an increased workload in Week 7, but not a shock because Rhodes is a marginal talent who was rumored to be on the trading block previously. Even if he stays put, those expecting Rhodes to be a fantasy factor are going to be disappointed. Good news for LaMont Jordan and Justin Fargas.

This has got to be from his attitude toward playing time. He has been agravated that he wasn't playing enough. His coachs and the organization are probably sick of him crying.

....considering he was also suspended for drugs. Something tells me he is a bad clubhouse guy.

I have never heard of a team cutting somebody for wanting more playing time. blink.gif

Probably has more to do with the fact that he isn't very good and the 4 game suspension for drug use after signing a free agent contract certainly didn't help.

If he were very good, then the Colts would have tried harder to keep him. They didn't. His lack of talent was masked in Indy because he was the last person teams were worried about beating them behind Peyton, Marvin, Wayne, etc. Now that he is not hidden behind superior talent, his marginal abilities are very apparent.

It might also indicate that Michael Bush is ready to jump off the PUP shelf

Here's an update on the situation from Rotoworld:

The Oakland Tribune considers it unlikely that the Raiders would consider dumping Dominic Rhodes before the end of the season.
Oakland paid Rhodes a $1.5 million signing bonus and Jerry McDonald points out in his Inside the Raiders blog that the team might need Rhodes due to LaMont Jordan's tricky back situation. Still, it appears unlikely that Rhodes will play a large second-half role barring an injury in front of him.Source: Oakland Tribune

No carries today. He looks out of the picture.

Consider these factors:

The Raiders season is very very unlikely to be turned around at this point.

The Raiders would like to look at Jamarcus Russell later this season, but that probably means giving up on this seasons slim playoff hopes.

If Rhodes were put into play and played well, perhaps leading the team to a rebound, fans might demand bringing him back.

Since Rhodes got a 4 game suspension, his next incident would likely result in a 1 year suspension.

So, does a rebuilding team want to risk creating a reltionship between its fans and a mediocre veteran runningback who is a few beers away from a 1 year suspension but will be clubhouse cancer if relegated to backup duties and playing under a contract that will expire at the end of 2009?

Since they can't play him much, they want to play Russell, playing Russell means giving up on the year, he could be a distraction to young players, and he carries that extra suspension risk, why not cut him?

I think more important was the fact that Fargas was much more productive in the same amount of carries as Jordan. I'd be suprised if they cut Rhodes, as Fargas isn't a reliable back. It is pretty obvious that Rhodes isn't in their plans for now. He's got two backs in front of him though that are injury risks. Rhodes should be on ww's though until one of them gets hurt.
