Thoughts/projections for Joel Hanrahan this season?  There seems to be considerable negativity surrounding his prospects for success in Boston...

It's not gonna be a good year. Bailey should get it back eventually.

The Red Sox have a lot of quality in that bullpen.  Hanrahan's leash could be pretty long early in the year, but if he struggles early....Bailey gets the first crack - until he gets injured.

It's funny because neither one of the two are the best reliever on the team.

Because the Red Sox organization has spent on relievers in a really stupid fashion the last two offseasons for no reason. Both in terms of money and assets they've traded in the organization.

It's also weird considering Bill James works for the team.

I just don't trust Hanrahan this year at all.  Pressure of pitching in a big city for the first time, an incredibly high BB rate, and Bailey breathing down his neck.

Bailey's a really effective pitcher - his issue is just health.

And Boston is likely pissed with how irrelevant the Sox were last year.  If Hanrahan blows a couple saves the first week, look for that seat to get really hot, really fast.

Hanrahan could be a top 3 closer this season, with how he looked last night.

Well I wouldn't exactly call it shuts the door. He did walk a batter . Had one K. Only half of his pitches were for strikes. I think the walks will come back to haunt him .

I don't understand why managers are glving closers not named Mariano such a short leash.  He blew a save on Wend and walked two batters today and now the closer carousel starts.  It's just annoying for closers overall to screw up once and all of a sudden your job is in jeopardy.  I feel like this has only been happening within the last 3-4 years while in previous years closers had at least two months of struggles before they were pulled.  Now they are lucky to have two weeks.

In Hanrahan's example, its not like he is unproven, he's been very strong the last two years. Now two weeks in any nothing?  What about a guy like Jose Valverde...Goes perfect in 2011.  Struggles but still has 35 saves in 2012. Can't find a job until the Tigers were pinned into a corner before he gets a job in 2013.  Makes no sense to me.  If your not perfect every time out then your in trouble.

It's because neither one is very good.
Boston should've never traded for Hanrahan. Stupid trade.

Hanrahan is just not a good fit for Fenway. A fly ball pitcher in a small park didn't seem like it would end well. Now that there's already talk about him losing it, the leash is being stretched to its max. Won't be long when the manager can't even give a straight yes when asked if he is still the closer.

Despite the rumblings and discontent, I can't imagine Hanrahan would be getting in any real danger this early of losing his gig. Sure, stranger things have happened, but he's likely got some leash.

This can't be answered. A lot depends on the couple weeks he's out. Can Bailey be lights out?
Does that even matter? Does manager prefer Bailey in 8th?
Who knows...

Just a hunch, but I think it puts his hold on the role at risk. If Bailey runs with it, could be a change of roles. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, I don't see much of an option but to wait and see if you own Hanrahan
