I have him in my AL-Only. I am excited about what he has done so far and I like the increase use of the change up. Hopefully it becomes a good weapon against righties. It will help him a long way to be more consistent.

Put together another very solid start, even though it was against the Cubs.

7 innings
2 HA
0 Runs
6 Ks

He is currently putting together a solid start without much fanfare.

2013 could be the year most people were predicting 2012 to be. Remember he missed some time with shoulder fatigue and a nasty stomach virus last year, but did show flashes. Three very solid starts in a row now.

nah, I'm pretty excited about his start to the season - - he's been a mainstay on my team for the past few years. If he can consistently do what he's shown in the past and what he's doing thus far this year, then this could very well be his year.

I've been a big fan of Derek since he came up, but you do have to take this latest outing in perspective. The Cubs lineup is just terrible against lefties, batting .208 against them this season. The game was also played in 30 degree weather and rain, with the wind blowing balls back into the park. It was the perfect storm of conditions.

That being said, I expect good things from Derek this season.

For what it's worth

"by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(04/16/13) Rangers starting pitcher Derek Holland was once one of the best pitching prospects in baseball, but he has settled in comfortably as a middle-of-the road starter through four major-league seasons. Does a strong start to this season, punctuated by seven strong innings in a win Tuesday, point to him finally taking the leap? Probably not.

Holland has shown pristine control in his major-league career, a trait that has sustained him through his first three starts this season. He has walked just four batters in 22 innings of work, helping lead to a 1.64 ERA. Unfortunately, the rest of his stats are right in line with previous performances, indicating that he is getting awfully lucky right now.

Holland is striking out 6.14 batters per nine innings, the lowest mark of his career. He has also allowed just one home run through 22 innings, despite a groundball rate right in line with his career norm. Those signs point us to a.194 batting average on balls in play and 4.0 home runs per flyball, both of which are likely unsustainably low, and certainly well below his career norms.

It might be nice for Fantasy owners to think they can catch on with a pitcher of Holland's pedigree just ahead of a breakout, but that would be wishful thinking in this case. "

Might be a good sell high guy right now?

He might be a good sell high guy right now in keeper leagues if you don't believe he is turning a corner. I am not a big fan of CBS' fantasy advice, mainly because I read something on their site about Brian Dozier being a possible 15/25 candiate this season (draw your own conclusions about it). But here's the thing about Holland, we heard this spring training that he was going to increase his use of his change up against righties and so far he has used that pitch 15.7% of the time. He has also posted a swing strike rate of 9% so far, which would be the highest of his career (which means there is a chance for an increased strike out rate of where it currently is). The last time he used his change up this much, 2010 when he used it 20.1% of the time and he posted a swinging strike rate of 8.2% (the highest of his career prior to this season).

Now this is all small sample size and Holland hasn't faced any opponents that were clicking on the offensive side of the ball as of yet, but there is some signs that he could increase his strikeout rate. I don't think Holland will be a fantasy ace, but there is some hope that he will be more consistent than he has been in years past if the increased use of his changeup continues to show the results it has so far.

that cbs blurb looks like some lazy analysis to me ... just using a small sample size and checking out his groubdball rate and k/9 and saying its a fluke ... whatever, yo ... he's not an ace, but he's mixed league viable... sell high? of course, if you can.

Great post. In what types of leagues can you sell high on a guy who was drafted as a SP6, if he was even drafted at all? A guy with a career 4.60 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. In my leagues you can't get anything for a pitcher unless it is an ace.

And really there's no need to sell. I hold extra SPs. Start him @OAK, @SEA, v.HOU, & some others. Sit @TEX in July and August, v. LAA, v.DET, etc.
You'll end up being happy with the results.
