Is it wrong to pick up players off waivers if you're no longer in the playoffs?

There's this owner in my league who just picked up some players and he's not in the playoffs. This is my first time playing fantasy, am I missing something? I feel like it's a douche move. I need those players off the waiver especially when I'm in a pretty neck to neck battle with my opponent in the first round.

if its set up like espn leagues where there's a losers bracket, why would it be wrong? its your team, do what the f--- you want. if you intentionally don't pick people up so that others will benefit, thats almost collusion lol.

if there's a losers bracket then sure its ok. but if there's nothing left for that person to gain this season and its not a keeper league, then what is the point in picking people up other than to screw over those left in contention?

I believe the common ettiquette standard here is that anyone not in the playoffs or playing for anything should NOT be adding/dropping players while the playoffs are going on UNLESS it is a keeper league and a keeper caliber player comes available. You would think this should be common sense, but there's always people who do it anyways.

Espn has the losers bracket playoffs where people play for final ranking, so to answer your question, no.

if your not first your last!

with that being said... people playing in money leagues only provide $$ to the top 3 teams.. we do cash prize to 1st/2nd... i havent really seen a consolation prize for teams who did not make the playoffs ... so people who try to play shiesty are just haters and are in denial that they lost

I'm in an ESPN league and the players who are not in the playoff bracket are in what's called the "Consolation" bracket. And I just read the ESPN rules explaining that it's serves nothing more than a pride boost to see where you rank as a whole. But if you didn't make it into the playoffs...I really don't see the point in snatching players off the waivers if there are still people competing for the goal which is #1

i already said if theres a losers bracket im ok with it. as long as theres something to gain. i took his statement as there not being anything for that guy to gain, whether that be positioning or keeper.

I think Main Event has it right. It really does come down to etiquette, that is, if it is not expressly written in a league's constitution. And if your league doesn't have a constitution which closes these kinds of loopholes, it should. And a league's constitution could explain things such as acquiring players for keeper purposes. But back on the actual topic, I would agree with the OP - if a team isn't in the playoffs, Consolation Bracket, or in some other league mandated contest to finish out the year, then it is a douche move. A league should have a rule regarding this, and not allowing it to happen.

i agree with this. people making moves that are completely out of contention are much more likely to do things to negatively affect certain teams in the hunt on purpose. in roto leagues ive had guys out of contention put down certain players to help their friend that is contending. tough to police that stuff.

In general teams which are no longer playing for anything should not be able to make roster moves. However, if you haven't specified that in your league settings, you have to live with the consequences. I recommend stating these rules at the beginning of the season (or beginning of the playoffs) and having the commissioner lock teams that are no longer in any playoff bracket.

My answer to that is a big NO! Unless the rule states that you can't pick off waivers if you're not a playoff team. Do whatever you want. There's still the consolation round in Yahoo! public and most private leagues and if you want to top that consolation group and finish the season 7th, you can use all 4 of your player adds.

IMO, you can't really blame anyone but yourself or maybe the commish, if people are acting within the established rules. Of course, it's definitely better if people just followed the unwritten rules, but it's not really something to be expected. I do think though, that a lot of it is your own responsibility to let the commish know (preferrably before season or playoffs) to implement measures that markdash mentioned. If you don't like the rules, it's your own fault for joining the league in the first place, unless the commish made rule changes mid-season/mid-playoffs in an unreasonable manner.

THERE'S NOTHING RUDE ABOUT PLAYING WITHIN THE RULES.

If you don't like that rule, you can create your own league and change that. I belong in one where non-playoff teams are barred from picking during playoffs.

In my league, we play for $ but only the top 3 get $. So the losers and the consolation brackets shouldn't be picking anything up because there's nothing to play for. Them picking up just messes up everyone else who's still in it.
