The Patriots traded Demps and a 7th for him. The guy has talent. I wouldn't be sleeping easy if I was a Ridley owner. I'm not trying to say that he'll steal the job. Just that I'd be worried that Ridley might fumble and Blount would blow up, making this into a real competition.

From what I've read, Blount has really gotten his act together. Had he always had his act together, he might've been a 1st rounder. This will be an interesting season for Blount to say the least.

Ridley, Vereen, Bolden and Washington all on the roster.

I'm not sure Blount will even make final cuts.

However, it's the Pats, if he shows up 10-12 lbs lighter than his listed weight and has improved in short yardage situations, anything can happen.

As flawed as Blount is, that was a great trade for the Pats. Demps is just a sideshow novelty. He isn't a pro football player.

For the cost of a 7th round pick, it's worth a chance to kick Blount's proverbial tires a bit.

Yeah, because Blount was so effective in that role last season.

Preseason will tell us a lot about his value. I am in the he won't even make the roster camp. But one thing is sure, if your a RB in NE, Bill finds some way to make use of your talents and give you some opportunity to shine.

Only problem with this is I don't believe Blount has much talent, which is why I question if he can even make their roster.

Did i just comment on a Legarrette Blount thread?? Man, the 2013 season needs to get here quick.

Blount reminds me of Kevan Barlow, 49ers RB....anyone remember him?
Had that great 5.0 ypc 1,100 yard season, then total implosion for 2 seasons, then out of the league.

I don't know how fools think he has no talent. To do what he did on that F-ed up Raheem Morris team was nothing short of amazing. That team was a total cluster f---, yet he put up 385 carries at 4.6 ypc pretty much solely on 1st and 2nd down (14 carries on 3rd down in those 2 years) and he was always removed during garbage time for Graham or Lumpkin. 4.6 ypc is no accident. Before all the character issues emerged, he was considered a 1st round talent. By all accounts, he got his s--- together last year despite the coach hating him and now he's competing with a couple 2nd round guys and an undrafted guy. He might not take well to the New England scene or it might provide the structure he needs. But if he doesn't make the team, it won't be due to lack of talent.

I agree he has not done as well as one would expect, given his size. I recall talk in 2010 about him not doing well there, so Graham was going to be the goal line back, but they never got near the goal line so we never knew for sure.

But keep in mind that he's only had 15 career carries inside the 5 yard line. FWIW, Ridley did score 8 TDs last year on carries inside the 5, but he only managed to net 2 yards for a staggering 0.1 ypc. Historically, BJGE scored on over 50% of his carries inside the 5, so it's not like Ridley is really excelling in that role (40% conversion rate + getting stuffed for a loss frequently).

One of the most uninformed statements of the young season. New England doesn't even use a 'goal-line back'. They run that uptempo offense and whoever is in when they get in the red zone gets touches. Trust me, last year I saw my boy Ridley boned out of many a GL touch because of it.
I have 2 warning points. How many until I get a prize?

Yeah, I kind of agree. I mean, I seem to remember Danny Woodhead getting his share of goal line carries over the past couple seasons. New England uses most of their backs in a variety of roles.

completely forgot that he did this until ffninja was talking about his character issues. Thought we needed some humor interjected on this thread. Anyone else think the dude he punched out must not have been very popular/somewhat deserved it? I only say that because it's pretty amazing blount doesn't get swarmed by boise st players, i know they're obviously classier but most times if you punch someone their teammates are all over you.

Look at the guy's face prior to getting hit. No doubt he deserved it.

That said, here are the other known character issues:

Punched a teammate during brief stint in Tennessee before landing in TB.

Reportedly had trouble making it to practice on time during camp. They even gave him some kind of chauffeur if I remember correctly.

Seems like NE is the worst possible landing spot for him . . . unless he's matured past these things.

I actually do think he's got some good football in him. But opportunity may have already passed him by imo.

The one in which he got 2 carries? Good point.
