Can this guy keep the job all season? Hasn't given up a run over 7.1 IP and is 5/5 on save opps so far.

Stranger things have happened. People will chime in with all his below average stats over the years, but look at Fernando Rodney last year. Sometimes guys with experience that get another chance to make it in the bigs make it happen. At worst you picked him up for free and drop him later, but he's looked very good so far.

Im not so sure about that.....if Gregg looks good and goes on a run Fuji could be stuck in set up role...he had his chance and the injury was awful timing.

Sveum is a vets guy and I think he'd want to get as many W's as possible in his first year as manager. He 'officially' named him closer yesterday fwiw. The flip side is they pay fuji and got him specifically to be the closer. I think the end result will be Gregg remaining as closer when fuji is back as long as he's converting saves and getting wins BUT I think his leash will be very short regardless cause of fuji.

Just read that recap of Fuji's outing, and wasn't super encouraged.  The results were there against dudes we've never heard of, but he fell behind in the count to almost every hitter he faced.

That's what got him in trouble before... hopefully the command improves as he continues to work his way back.

I'm holding still in the DL spot, but I believe Gregg is starting to run away with this.  Two or three more clean conversions, and he's going to have a pretty long leash, which is basically how Gregg manages to keep his gig.

There is just too much uncertainity about gregg, even if he does keep his job and pitches really well all year, I will still happily upgrade a batting position and lose some saves

Actually, it's Sveum's 2nd year as manager, and I would think if he plans or wants to be here for the completion of the "rebuild" he would want to keep his job beyond this year, and if/when Kevin Gregg starts to stink, Cubs fans won't forget about 2009. The longball was what really killed him that season, but even so, he was just not very good. Once it heats up in Chicago and around the league in general, he's going to start serving up taters probably. I own him in one of my leagues, and it was a "what the hell?" type of pickup... but I don't expect this to last.

This said, if he pitches well, there is no reason he should lose the job. But I don't expect it to last.

This is my plan as well... as I don't expect it to last, and Fuji should be able to win the job back. And if not, I'm sure Gregg will cough it up or be traded anyway-- especially if he continues to pitch good. I mean, beyond 2013, what good is a 34-year-old+ Kevin Gregg on a MLC to the Cubs? Trade bait to the rest of the league.... so hold onto Fuji, and maybe even Marmol if you're desperate for saves and speculating.

I'm in a 20 team league where saves are difficult to come by.  Thank you, Kevin Gregg.  You're an awful closer but hopefully you found some magic in a bag.

Finally a bit of appreciation for whats the Gregginator has done this year. I have to admit, I've always hated watching Gregg pitch in the past and who knows if he can keep it up....but....he deserves a bit of respect for his performacne so far.

I haven't seen all his games, but I did catch his first two saves this year... the first one where he struggled a bit early, but ended up K'ing Votto to seal it on a pretty nice sequence of pitches... In his second save (I can't remember who it was against) I remember being reallly impressed movement on his FB and on how he was locating it.

I just took a quick look at his Fangraphs page, looks like he has been having a lot of success with his sinker this year (something he didn't really use much in the past). I thinks that's probably the fastball I thought I saw with a bunch of movement.... maybe, just maybe Gregg isn't the same crap bag he was in the past.

Any Cubbies fans out ther who have maybe caught some more of his games then me, would be interested to know your thoughts?

Anyway, I can tell you this, If the answer to the above question is positive, I don't think it would be hard to buy Gregg in most leagues right now. For a guy who has a closing joband is pitching well, nobody is giving him the time of day because of his craptacular past.
