Anyone buying into this guy? I know this may be a stretch and many may not be looking for a middle reliever but it looks like he is taking over Luke Hochevars 8th inning spot for the royals. In yahoo Davis is eligible at both SP and RP. 2 years ago when he worked out of the pen for Tampa he had 87 K in 70 IP with an era in the 2's. I think he would be a very sneaky quality reliever had that offers position flexibility as well. Any thoughts?

He is just not good enough, shame Kansas City is going to have to learn this the hard way. He is not 8th inning caliber. He's a good long man, someone you can send out there on a Sunday afternoon to mop up innings after your starter gets shelled.

He's the type of pitcher who will be out of baseball after two more years of 5+ ERA.

I'm a Royals fan and I have to totally disagree with you. I think he's the perfect replacement for Hochevar in the 8th inning. In 10 September innings after being moved to the bullpen, he gave up 3 hits, 4 walks, 1 run and struck out 7. That's a small sample size but in 2012 when he spent a full year in the bullpen for Tampa Bay (not as a long reliever), he posted a 2.43 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 87 K's in 70.1 innings.

I would love to hear your reasoning for the above statement.

Why isn't Kelvin Herrera in the 8th inning? Did he sour after being unable to capitalize on his chance at the closer's role and later sent down to the minors or is he slowly working his way back? His 2013 season numbers were still pretty good.

He gave up too many long balls last year. 21 in 58+ innings! In one game last year against the Braves, he gave up 3 back-to-back-to-back! He brought it back somewhat but still finished with an ERA of 3.86 which isn't great for a bullpen arm. I think he'll be good, definitely better than last year, but right now, I think Davis would be the better 8th inning guy.

Herrera gave up 9 home runs in 58.1 innings. He walked 21 batters. Nine is still a lot in that amount of innings, but a lot better than 21.

He was in AAA for a while last year after blowing up repeatedly. Plus Hochevar was elite last year in the 8th. I don't think Davis is taking the 8th inning role. I'm not a Royals insider, but wouldn't it be smart to make him the long man and have guys like Herrera, Collins, and Crow be the set up guys?

There’s no profit to be made in Royals manager Ned Yost declaring Davis the primary eighth inning bridge to All-Star closer Greg Holland, but when asked directly about it on Sunday, Yost gets as close as you’re likely to hear him.
“I’ve got a whole bullpen full of eighth inning guys, the way I see it,” he says. “But is (Davis) probably the most prominent eighth inning guy? Yeah. Yeah.”
The similarities of Davis and the man he replaces are too obvious to not think about. Hochevar, statistically, was one of baseball’s worst starting pitchers of this century (5.10 ERA is tied for 8th-worst among pitchers with at least 100 starts) before transitioning into a dominant reliever (he struck out 82 and struck out 59 in 70 1/3 innings) in 2013.

You're right. A mis-read on my part. My bad. But like you say, 9 in that amount of innings still isn't great.

His stuff plays better in the bullpen. Good velo, good curve, zero change up. Those guys usually end up in the bullpen more often then not when they can't get lefties out.

For a league that counts K's as a category, seems to me that Davis is very much an asset, esp. in deep leagues. I'm loving his K rate though he can't keep it up, can he?

I doubt he sustains a Kimbrel/Chapman type K Rate but his last full season as a RP he had an 11.1 K/9 for the full season.

I don't see why not; his K-rate should be 10+. He was great with TB when they used him as a reliever, but now he's in a weaker division. I'd be more worried about his 5+ BB/9. If he can keep it down, the WHIP should go down and he could be one of the more valuable middle relievers with some saves sprinkling in when Holland needs a rest.

Another great outing for Davis. 2 IP's with 4 K's and in line for the win. I hope KC doesn't mess him up and put him back in the rotation. Two years ago his K rate was over 10 and I think he'll easily match that if he stays in the pen.
