Jonathan Grimes has emerged as the favorite for the Texans' primary backup running back job.

Coach Bill O'Brien confirmed Grimes is ahead of rookie Alfred Blue, while Andre Brown seems to be pulling up the rear. Grimes had impressive measurables coming out of William & Mary two years ago, running 4.53 at his Pro Day with a 38-inch vertical and explosive 10-foot-5 broad jump at 5-foot-10, 207. He's worth considering late in re-draft leagues and rostering in Dynasty. There are reasons to believe Arian Foster's body is beginning to break down.

Interesting to note as Grimes started in Week 17 last year. As a Giants fan, I can't help to wonder if Andre Brown is injured again and has fallen to #5 because of that. You also have to wonder if Grimes has the trust over the rookie Blue, and Brown, because he was in Houston last year and if he is held in higher regard because he outperformed Dennis Johnson in the post-Foster period last year.

Something to monitor?

Crosspost from the Arian Foster thread, regarding Jonathan Grimes passing up Andre Brown on the Texans depth chart:

I owned Brown until that first preseason game.

It's notable that Bill O'Brien wanted to get an extended look at Jonathan Grimes. It's especially notable that he didn't even bother letting Andre Brown on the field. The only reason to not let Andre Brown step on the field would be because Arian Foster's injury is far more severe than they're letting on, and Foster won't be ready for Week 1. That's the only scenario I could see Andre Brown being held out of preseason for, if he was their primary backup and they didn't want him injured for Week 1.

Or a secret injury to Andre Brown. Either way, neither of those scenarios are likely.

Jonathan Grimes performed pretty well considering how abysmal that game went for the Texans.

His end-of-the-game statline looks poor at 10-for-39 (3.9 YPC), but that wasn't how his game went:

http://www.nfl.com/g...lyze=playbyplay

1st Texans Drive, 1st play:
1-10-HOU 20 - (10:37) 41-J.Grimes up the middle to HOU 27 for 7 yards (93-C.Campbell).

They went 3-and-out after Fitzpatrick threw two incompletions.

Next Texans drive:

1-10-HOU 18 - (3:45) 41-J.Grimes left tackle to HOU 22 for 4 yards (98-F.Rucker).

2-6-HOU 22 - (3:10) 41-J.Grimes right tackle to HOU 22 for no gain (92-D.Williams). PENALTY on HOU-75-D.Newton, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at HOU 22 - No Play.

Pickpatrick threw his first INT on the next play.

Third Texans drive:
1-10-HOU 13 - (1:30) 41-J.Grimes left end to HOU 18 for 5 yards (98-F.Rucker).

2-5-HOU 18 - (:55) 41-J.Grimes up the middle to HOU 23 for 5 yards (97-L.Alexander, 36-D.Bucannon).

Fitzpatrick then completed a 9-yard pass to end the quarter. Start of the 2nd quarter, same drive, 4 consecutive handoffs to Grimes:

2-1-HOU 32 - (15:00) 41-J.Grimes up the middle to HOU 36 for 4 yards (97-L.Alexander).

1-10-HOU 36 - (14:30) 41-J.Grimes right end to HOU 32 for -4 yards (57-A.Okafor, 59-M.Benard).

2-14-HOU 32 - (13:47) (Shotgun) 41-J.Grimes up the middle to HOU 40 for 8 yards (36-D.Bucannon). PENALTY on ARI-98-F.Rucker, Illegal Use of Hands, 5 yards, enforced at HOU 40.

1-10-HOU 45 - (13:30) (Shotgun) 41-J.Grimes up the middle to HOU 48 for 3 yards (98-F.Rucker).

1-10-ARI 48 - (12:31) 41-J.Grimes left end to ARI 42 for 6 yards (97-L.Alexander, 96-K.Martin).

2-4-ARI 42 - (11:56) 41-J.Grimes up the middle to ARI 41 for 1 yard (57-A.Okafor).

That drive ended with a punt after they failed the 3rd down conversion with an incomplete pass there.

I'm going to guess the -4 yard play on that drive got blown up in the backfield due to poor blocking.

Those were his plays, starting the game for the Texans.

Here's my takeaway:

Total Carries that gained 4 yards or greater: 7

8
7
6
5
5
4
4

7 carries for 39 rushing yards = 5.571428571428571 YPC

Carries that gained fewer than 4 yards:
3
1
0 (a holding penalty was called on this play against the Texans)
-4 (this likely got blown up in the backfield by poor blocking)

4 carries for 0 total yards rushing = 0 YPC

Judging by the above, especially considering that Grimes first carries were for 7, 4, 5, 5, and 4 yards, Grimes was running very well against the Cardinals first-team defense, and that's why they left him in there.

Lastly, RotoUnderworld (speaking from a strictly physical measurables / combine data perspective), has previously noted this about Jonathan Grimes:

For Arian Foster to always be hurt he sure has nice stats. Every year except last year and his rookie year he's had less than 1,600 total yards, 1,200 rushing yards.

Texans released RB Andre Brown.
That developed quickly. Reports surfaced over the weekend that Brown was bringing up the rear of the running back depth chart, and then he failed to see any offensive snaps in the preseason opener after he was widely believed to be Arian Foster's clear backup. Jonathan Grimes is now in the saddle as the No. 2 to Foster, with Alfred Blue behind him. Dennis Johnson was also cut Monday.

Now, will Grimes get enough of a roll to warrant drafting other than as a handcuff?

Grimes role will primarily depend upon Foster's health. I'm pretty sure that Bill O'Brien still views Foster as a 3-down back.

I don't disagree with that, and I don't follow Houston, but things are getting interesting. Last year in week 17 Grimes started against Ten and rushed for 50 yards, a TD, and had six receptions for 76 yards. In fact, he led all Houston receivers. So, with Fitz at QB they will need to feature a short passing game. Just wondering with the RB dump Houston did today (they cut a 3rd RB as well) they got something planned for this guy, especially in the passing game. Perhaps some packages just for him? We might find out tomorrow Houston signed Ronnie Brown (who they just looked at), but he's just depth. Something might be going on here that we may need to pay more attention too. I would like the Houston fans to weigh in ...

Houston fans almost certainly have no idea how Bill O'Brien operates his offense (since the coach just got there).

Well, we'll see ... Houston just signed William Powell, and Ronnie Brown, looks like a depth move, Powell was out of the league last year. Again, Grimes is someone worth monitoring during pre-season. As it stands today, he would seem to be the #2 RB.

Texans signed RB William Powell.

Powell, 26, worked out for the Texans on Monday, along with Ronnie Brown and Brian Leonard. Powell was out of the league last season after averaging just 3.6 YPC behind a pathetic Arizona offensive line in 2012. After the Texans cut all three of RBs Andre Brown, Dennis Johnson, and Tim Cornett on Monday, Powell is No. 4 on the depth chart. The backfield is wide open behind Arian Foster.

Ronnie Brown is veteran depth. If Bill O'Brien likes Jonathan Grimes (and it appears he does), Grimes should win the job easy.

Bill O'Brien likes having veteran depth that can pass-block and catch some passes out of the backfield.

In 2009, Bill O'Brien and the Patriots stockpiled Kevin Faulk, Fred Taylor, and Sammy Morris.

Laurence Maroney was their lead rusher in 2009, with:
194 carries / 757 rushing yards / 3.9 YPC + 14 receptions / 99 receiving yards:

http://www.nfl.com/p...2506884/profile

Maroney also had 9 rushing TDs.

Kevin Faulk - 2009:
62 carries / 335 rushing yards / 5.4 YPC / 2 rushing TDs + 37 receptions / 301 receiving yards / 1 receiving TD
http://www.nfl.com/p...2500600/profile

Sammy Morris - 2009:
73 carries / 319 rushing yards / 4.4 YPC / 2 rushing TDs + 19 receptions / 180 receiving yards
http://www.nfl.com/p...2504126/profile

Fred Taylor - 2009:
63 carries / 269 rushing yards / 4.3 YPC / 4 rushing TDs + 2 receptions / 17 receiving yards
http://www.nfl.com/p...2503256/profile

Don't get too fooled by the YPC - Tom Brady was the QB.

However, do note that injuries to the above RB cast probably played some role in their annoying usage in 2009.

^^^^^ Interesting that Houston has done a total purge of their RB core and are signing backs (agree as depth only) that can play in the passing game. Again, something is going on here, and I'll point once again to Grimes last season week 17 start with six catches for 76 yards.

That was a different coach though. I don't think Bill O'Brien had anything to do with that performance, since he had nothing to do with the team at that point. Bill O'Brien wasn't hired until January of this year.

Grimes is a great tout right now. I'd expect Powell to be cut before the season starts, they just need a camp body. Foster, Grimes, Brown, Blue sounds right. Brown as insurance for Foster injury/Blue slow start.

Grimes is in the driver seat for the #2 role. Its a great spot especially with Foster hurt right now. Its a good time to stash/draft if you have the chance before the next Texans game. I'd expect Grimes to be used heavily, and if he has a big game he will start getting a lot more hype.

Grimes is about as worthless as they come with regards to fantasy.

Let's hypothetically say that Foster was to miss all of 2014 (which he won't). Grimes still wouldn't be fantasy relevant. Grimes is not a good NFL RB. He may touch the ball about 10 times a game out of desperation, but none of that will be fantasy relevant because he simply isn't good.

If you want 9 carries for 30 yards and 1 reception for 5 yards with 0 TDs, this is the guy to waste your draft pick on. Coaches that start this guy are coaches that get fired. He might get mixed in here and there, but none will be fantasy relevant. I would envision Ronnie Brown, or some other established vet, to have more of a role in this offense IFF Foster was to miss all of 2014 (which he won't).

Think of the Cleveland Browns' RBs last year, now think of Chris Ogbonnaya, now picture a guy that can't catch the football as well as Chris O out of the backfield (at the NFL level)... Voila! Jonathan Grimes. You can thank me later for saving you the draft pick you will likely use to pass up on Greg Jennings when this Grimes hype gets out of control for no reason.

can't catch a football but he had 6 catches for 76 yards in Week 17....Oh.

Don't let the preseason stats fool you.

Without even counting the TD, he had 14 points in that game. Fitzpatrick doesn't throw deep balls so he could easily repeat that line if Foster were to miss time.

Would he be better than Foster if Foster goes down? no way. Would he put up RB2, maybe even RB1 numbers some games? yes.

Dreams and Dwightmares...lol man, just lol.

The only full game of film we have of Grimes came last season in Week 17, with god-only-knows who at QB for the Texans after the Schaub / Kubiak fiasco.

http://www.nfl.com/p...ogs?season=2013

Grimes did basically the exact opposite of what you described, in a close game (10-16 Loss). He scored a TD, and as Detroit noted, he caught 6 passes for 76 receiving yards. Totaling 126 yards that game.

I hope everyone in my league thinks like D&D. I can take him with my last pick easily. There have been many guys who weren't world beaters but were valuable fantasy assets because they were the starters. I can't see how Grimes won't take that role if Foster goes down. Look at the turds behind him! And I don't think we even have enough of a sample size to definitively say he isn't good. Well worth a late round pick to stash on your bench.

If Foster went down, he'd be an auto RB2. Any RB with full playing time is pretty much RB2.
