A lot of guys have gotten these mysterious staph infections over the last couple years. What gives?

Rudy gay just went down with one as well. Not sure what the deal is with this. Before 2007 I dont think I ever heard of an nba player getting a staph infection. Now its common place. Its kinda like when plaintar faciatas came out of nowhere 4 years ago to claim victim after victim. It was like the black plague. Everybody remember that?

The types of staph infections athletes are getting are usually from scraps, turf burns, and cuts. Compound that with the fact they spend a lot of time in a crowded locker room with many different vectors for infections (towels, jerseys etc) then it's no surprise athletes seem to get hit by staph infections more than the general population. Staph used to be a pretty benign bacterial infection until over medication of antibiotics lead to Methicilin resistant staph aureus (MRSA) which will only respond to a handful of antibiotics. These infections often occur at the site of a skin wound and will develop into something like a giant pimple. If untreated, the infection can basically invade any part of the body, ultimately leading to death.
