What do you think... Has he been progressing in Pitt?
Ryudop
Jan 12 2009, 10:31 AM
He might be, but he won't see the field enough to be productive as long as Pittsburgh has Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Nate Washington, Heath Miller and Matt Spaeth at their disposal. Even if he is talented, there's little value to be had in a fourth receiver on a team with two quality tight ends, not to mention a great running game.

Could be a sleeper pick in this year's draft. and a nice slot WR option.

Uhhhhhhhhh, WHAT!?
Hines ain't hangin em up anytime soon. Nate Washington is a FA after this year, so I doubt PIT will be in any great need to resign him with Limas waiting. Well, I hope not at least.

That's a good point. If the Steelers let Washington walk, it would be a good indicator of Sweed's progression this year. Of course, I assume he would still have to compete for the #3 receiver job in camp next year, but if he ends up winning that job, he could be a good source of cheap production in a deeper league, and could be in for a good season if either Ward or Holmes ends up missing time for any reason.

Sweed has played like absolute garbage anytime he's touched the field this year, including dropping a perfectly thrown ball by Byron Leftwich this past week. Definitely too early to call him a bust, but the Steelers will keep Nate Washington if they can or bring in some competition for Sweed at WR3.

I would call the guy who will be the #5 option (at best)- on a team that doesn't throw - a waste of a draft pick...

Nate Washington is a much better receiver than Sweed.

Did you see him drop the wide open TD pass in the AFC Championship game? This guy has bust written all over him. He's also injury prone. Besides he can't beat Nate Washington for playing time? Pass on him, he will be available on your waiver wire all year if you feel the need to have him on your team.

Yeah, but he laid on the field for a minute after bruising his ego on the play.

And he laid one hell of a block on a defender later in the game. Not to mention (if I recall correctly), he broke up a sure interception on a poorly thrown Roth pass as well. He should have caught that pass earlier in the game, and he likely won't have much value next year, but the future can still be bright for this young WR.

I can see potential in the guy seeing as he is physically gifted and creates nice seperation on some of the plays I have seen. However, can he catch the ball??? This guy WILL be given the opportunity next year when injuries strike any one of Ward, Holmes, or Washington. It all depends what he makes out of those opportunities.
I do not think he is a better option than any of them but I would believe it if he were to be on the field more in the second half of the 2009 season because anything can happen.

That block was Hines Ward-ish, so awesome.

he's got the tools to be a starter. however, he dropped balls all year in his limited time. he needs to prove he can be consistent before he passes anyone on the depth chart

He seems like a punk to me.
He drops an easy TD pass, then lies on the ground like a baby, costing his team a timeout (and 3 points).
Then he proceeds to get all jacked up because he laid a block on Corey Ivy, one of the smallest players on the field.

A very accurate analysis - on all three points

I wouldn't say he is a "punk" I see him as more of a rookie that doesn't really seem to assert himself fully. When he was played he has gotten open granted he dropped most of the balls thrown to him cause he looked to run with the ball before he had it in his hands. If he can ever hold on to the damn ball he should be a good NFL WR hopefully Hines Ward will teach him some lessons.

Good points, and I think he'll come around.
I remember Plax making bone head plays early in his Steeler career, he's a bone-head, but he turned out to be a star WR.

I didn't get to see him play at all this season as he was rarely ever on the field. But what I saw from last week vs. BAL is that he is very gifted but very raw. He looks like Tyrone Calico right now. Fortunately he is in a great organization that has great teachers of the game that hopefully can bring the talent out of him.
