Saw a Manningham thread but no Smith...

This little sucker is 3rd in points for WRs in our league (2nd in receptions, 5th in yards and along with about 10 others has 2 TDs- only Colston has 3). With his precise route running, the emergence of Eli and the Giants ability to run the ball, I see a really good looking PPR season for this guy.

It was great to see the Giants go to him in the red zone Sunday and last week versus the Cowboys. Assuming his numbers yesterday would've been better if Tampa could've put up a fight.

Me grabbing Smith off of waivers week 1 makes the 5th round pick I used on Eddie Royal easier to swallow.

Couldn't agree more, except I picked Smith off waivers after someone dropped him prior to the start of the season.

well i drafted him late because i was a genius
Enoch
Yeah, that was a really nice play they ran for his TD yesterday. Bunch right formation, with Smith in the middle and furthest from the LOS. Boss and Hagan in front of him clear out the defenders by running an inside route ('post' or 'in'; I'm not sure about the angle of the break) and a corner route. Underneath them, Smith just runs to the goalline and does a nice little hook, with the ball delivered before the defense can get close enough to cover him. For all the abuse that Kevin Gilbride gets from Giants fans, that was some nice play design.
cubbie5150
Drafted him late as a BYE week filler...so glad I did, because he might end up being a savior of sorts for my WR corps
BJays1993
Drafting this guy in the 11th has made it somewhat bearable to have Welker sit 2 weeks in a row.
truebeast
Luckily picked him over Earl Bennett with the Mr Irrelevant pick in our rookie/FA draft, glad I did as he is now easily my best WR with Roddy and Braylon being shady.
tschnedr
So is he for real? Or a flash in the pan? Thinking of trading for him in my ppr keeper league.

same here, although I think he's going to be a solid WR3 possibly a WR2

He is forreal, believe the hype. He is far from guaranteed a TD every week but when he scored he will put up WR2 numbers. Hes almost a lock for 6-7 catches 60-70 yds a week. Thats an average week as well. Also Eli looks to him in the Red Zone a lot, expect a big year from Smith, im excited to have him on my team and as a Giants fan I love having a receiver who catches everything and is always there to make a play when we need one. I constantly find myself saying who else, Steve Smith of course. He always seems to make a play when the Giants need to move the chains. Hes a solid receiver, not very flashy but he really gets the job done in real life and it seems like in fantasy moving forward. As long as Eli continues to look his was in the red zone this guy will be a big time receiver.

He's definitely for real.
apathy
Easy WR2 in a PPR league, been playing like a number 1 so far this season
Roy
He is the real deal. I have him in two PPR leagues and I would rather trade someone with a bigger name because you could probably get more in return and keep the same level of production.
HurryUpSundays
If its a ppr league I think it would be silly to trade him. He is clearly the #1 target on that team AND is getting red zone looks? He is being touted as one of the best route runners in the NFL and has extremely sticky fingers. That will be money in the bank when the bad weather comes as well. Lots of short dinks to him.

I've got he and Ocho and would rather move 85 than Smith.

My 2 cents.
BoSox04
Steve Smith continue to gets the red zone looks as he just got a 3 yard TD reception. Im loving this waiver pickup. So glad I went for him instead of Manningham with my #2 priority.

add another TD!
Dr. Whom
Traded pierre Thomas and Steve Smith for Andre Johnson this week. I am not allowed to give trade advice as this was the most epic fail

The man looks like he's just running by himself out there. Teams aren't giving him any respect right now ...
nomidi
Running circles around KC's secondary. His timing with Eli Manning is off the charts right now, everything is delivered on time, where it needs to be, and on a consistent basis.
blacknapalm
guess who started kevin walter over him? FML.

Preliminary projections of 90REC/1000YDS/7TD after his break out game vs DAL don't seem so crazy now do they?

Those numbers are probably his FLOOR if Eli Manning's heel doesn't become bothersome.

2009-2010 Fantasy MVP so far this season in my book.

i was certainly a skeptic a few weeks ago but not any longer... 90/1000 is virtually a lock...

yes, all of a sudden, the question of:

who is better- Steve Smith or Steve Smith?

is not a totally ridiculous one...
fatboyj711
fyi

smith is 2nd in the league in targets with 44 (he had a whopping 16 targets yesterday), 1 behind moss, and likely leads all WRs in fantasy scoring in almost every format...

the debate regarding who's the better fantasy/reality wide receiver between smith and manningham has officially been squashed... might have to start revving up the manningham vs nicks debate soon...

Werd, esp since Manningham bobbled everyone one of his targets yesterday. I'm guessing he doesn't have the best hands in the world.

Only thing that slows this guys production is if he is hit by a car..... David Carr.

Fingers crossed for ya, Eli!

I'm nervous as hell about Eli's injury... I was watching the game at the time, and like many others, I immediately thought, "@#@! blown up achilles!!!" Week 5 is gonna be a down regardless w/ Oak coming to town, so if Eli has to sit w/ Carr taking his place, so be it, as long as it helps Eli be good for the rest of the way.

Hope this doesn't derail a great season thus far....Still speculative...

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Eli Manning may have plantar fasciitis after suffering a non-contact heel injury in the Giants' Week 4 win.
Playing through plantar fasciitis is possible, but it requires daily monitoring and can come down to a matter of pain tolerance. Eli has not missed a game in five seasons and will undoubtedly push to play, but the Giants have an easy win on the slate with the Raiders visiting in Week 5. It remains to be seen whether Manning will be cleared. New York's bye isn't until Week 10.

FYI... plantar fascitis is really painful and it tends to linger. There are things you can do to alleviate it like wearing insoles or special shoes, etc. but the bottom line is, you have to rest it to get better. As a Giants fan, I hope he is ok but just wanted to throw out there that the injury is not necessarily 'good'.

I don't know about considering it good news. A foot injury is never a good thing for an NFL player, and plantar fasciitis can be painful and difficult to shake (if that's even what he has). I guess the good news is that he probably won't miss much time, but there is a chance that the injury will affect his play.

I suppose it could have been an achilles tendon rupture based on how he went down, but you don't need an MRI to diagnose that...

obviously, no injury is "good", but it's pretty good news in relation to what it could've been (considering it's on the minor end of the spectrum)...

Agreed. Depending on the severity, it's very painful, although a QB does very little running. The other posters were probably referring to the fact that it looked like it could have been an Achilles injury from watching it. Plantar Fascitis is bad, but good, I guess, relative to an Achilles injury....

I understand what you are saying.

I've suffered through it years ago and it is incredibly painful (did a lot of research on it). It hurts even when you are just sitting or lying down. I wasn't running full speed or pivoting off the foot or having 300+ lb people jumping on me. laugh.gif
Enoch
The concern is that the injury is to his right foot, which is the foot that a right-handed QB plants and drives off of every time he throws. QB throwing mechanics are delicate and subtle, and a shot of pain every time he tries to throw the ball (or numbness, if they go that route) could lead to changes-- even unconscious ones-- for the worse.

Eli Manning is getting a second opinion on his foot/heel injury from Dr. Robert Anderson in North Carolina.
Anderson has worked with Jonathan Stewart (Achilles), among others. ESPN's Adam Schefter wrote on Twitter Monday that "Anderson's opinion and Manning's pain threshold will determine whether (Eli) plays Sunday." We do know that Eli's pain threshold his high, so Anderson's tests may be his biggest obstacle. Source: Adam Schefter on Twitter

NY Giants quarterback Eli Manning confirms he has plantar fasciitis during radio interview http://bit.ly/33uYMj
Patrick Bateman
Apparently had it for several weeks....

The Giants now say Eli Manning has been dealing with plantar fasciitis for "several weeks," and that he aggravated the injury in Sunday's win.
Manning was off to the best start of his career (8/2 TDs to INTs, 8.3 YPA, 63.2% completions) while playing through the injury. It's a concern, however, if Eli tore his plantar fascia during the non-contact situation Sunday. Manning says his "gut feeling" is that he'll play in Week 5 against Oakland, but it's up to the Giants. He'll probably be a game-day decision.

I disagree here, honestly as long as Eli is good to go this guy is primed to put up WR1 numbers. He is going to be a consistant target for Eli, nothing is going to change. Throw in a few more games like this week and you have yourself a solid WR1, maybe im biased because im a giants fan and ive watched this kid grow but he is taken a big step this year and I really dont see him slowing down. Obviously he wont keep up at this unbelievable pace but I really think week in week out he is good for 8 catches 90 yards and a potential TD. You guys have to realize Eli has not played the fourth qtr of either of his past two games, this guy could have had an even bigger week this week. The fact that Eli looks for him in the redzone so consistantly makes him a potential WR1 in my book. As long as the looks continue in the redzone this guy is an absolute stud. Just watch a giants game if you don't believe me, everytime the Giants need someone to make a catch there he is, Steve Smith moving the chains. The fact that hes finding the endzone now too makes him a fantasy beast. I have been preaching all year that he is significantly more valuable than Manningham and that his production is not going to slow down this year. Eli has turned into the real deal and Steve Smith is his go to receiver, expect a monster year from Steve Smith.

I won't be as effusive, but damn, SS2 has been tremendous. At some point though, a bit of regression will have to come into play. I know, it's just so hard to seriously entertain the idea of trading someone riding so high, but in this case, I will at least listen to offers if they come my way. I won't send selling signals mind you, but I'll listen. Who knows, maybe someone will offer up a deal I can't turn down. I will say this: if he can produce the rest of the way at even 75% of what he's done so far, he's easily my WR1, I think. What I thought was a huge weakness on my team (WR corps) now at least looks passable. So glad I drafted him late as a BYE week starter, LOL
Zara
The Giants are still primarily a run first team. In a standard scoring league I'd look to sell high on Smith. The redzone looks are nice for now, but Smith isn't a gamebreaking WR. He'll likely finish with less than double digit TDs so if someone in your league is going to offer WR1 value, I'd take it. In a PPR format, this guy is a stud. It's crazy that I'm reading people picked him late or off the waiver wire in a PPR league. Where were you people and the rest of the league during your drafts? Third year receiver, with phenomenal hands, insanely precise routes. I drafted him in the 8th round of my league and there were grunts and groans from at least 5 other owners who had him in their sights. Eli loves him. Giants love the short, move the chains passes. Smith is easily a 5 catches for 70 yards a week kind of guy and that's putting it lightly. He's had two double digit reception games already. PPR potential STUD.
