Full Version: Carney Vs Hartley

BETTAFISH
I know you guys all love kicker threads (sarcasm) so I thought I'd throw this out there for all you other Saints FG hounds out there. Seriously though, this situation definitely bears watching considering the beastly offense we are talking about here. I drafted Carney in all my leagues and I'm hoping he keeps his job. I'm wondering who you guys think eventually ends up with the job. Hartley has the bigger leg but Carney is as solid as they come. I'm inclined to think Carney hangs on to it ala the Tynes/Carney New York Giants kicker battle debacle of last year. I'm looking to see what you guys think of this whole situation ...discuss.

After the bye, but they're keeping carney.

Carney's job to lose

Is it John Carney?

It has been so far. It's not quite known who will be the kicker, but it's currently looking like Carney.

According to beat writer Jeff Duncan, the Saints still envision Garrett Hartley as their kicker of the future.

He won't be needed on kickoffs with rookie punter Thomas Morstead excelling in the role. Duncan expects Hartley to remain a game-day inactive with John Carney handling field-goal duties.

So im a bit unclear here still......does this mean Carney is the kicker for this week(6)? Meaning will he be handling FGs.

this is carney vs tynes part II, and it looks as though carney will remain the K for now...

NO will most likely activate only 1 kicker each game, so just keep an eye out for the NO active/inactive report if you can set your rosters just before game time... if you have to set your rosters earlier, it's too big of a risk to rely on carney or tynes if you ask me...

I think this is Carney's job for the rest of the season, BUT....

Given that Carney doesn't do kickoffs or punt work, New Orleans might drop or deactivate their punter and have Hartley active for punts/kickoffs. In that case, Hartley would be available to kick long field goals (more than 40 yards), where they aren't even trying with Carney. If they do this, it will have an small impact on Carney's numbers. If they don't go for it on 4th and 3 from the 35 yard line and try the 52-yarder instead, Carney misses out on a chance at a shorter FG or XP if they make the 4th down conversion.

However, Morstead has been doing a great job as punter for the Saints... I'm not picking Hartley up yet, but as a Carney owner I'm definitely following this closely.

i'm not sure why they would deactivate morstead when he's been booming kickoffs out of the endzone... has hartley punted before?

does anyone think carney gets pulled after missing xp (not really his fault with bad snap) and 49 yd fg this week?

carney hit a 46 yd FG earlier in the game, there's no guarantee that hartley would've made the 49 yder, and brunell botched the snap which resulted in the missed XP (which became a moot point anyways)...

imho, carney's job is safe until NO starts losing games (esp if the game is lost b/c of carney's leg) considering most coaches and players alike are superstitious by nature...

so am I taking a risk by keeping Carney on most of my teams? is there any chance that he loses the starting job to Hartley?

Really, really hard to say, as the Saints keep winning and may not want to tinker with anything. Though Hartley never missed last season, sooooooooo.... Hopefully, we'll hear something soon, as I have Carney as well, but would love to snipe Hartley up if he gets the job (much more range). You might want to grab hartley if you have a good amount of reserve space. Saying all that, I still think Carney will have to implode even worse to lose the job.

I'm streaming K at this point and don't have a spot for 2 Ks. I'm thinking the safest best is just go with the best available K, but then as you said, the Saints are just putting up points like its nobody's business. The worst case scenario is that Hartley just ends up taking the field without any fair warning...

that is, indeed, the worst case scenario. a nightmare in my league, where i am trying to finish atop the standings, and games are close.

the one good thing is that the saints are declaring Hartley as inactive on game days, giving us some notice.

keep your ear to the ground and scoop him up if/when he does become active.

however, i cant imagine them activating both kickers, though, so i would think a switch would take place mid-week.

Technically, they could make the switch an hour before game time if they'd like

Carney's missed FG last week cost me my game (lost by 1). I'm wondering if pressure is mounting with Hartley waiting in the wings. Seems like place-kicking is a highly psychological occupation.
rotoking07
According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, it "doesn't appear" K John Carney is in danger of losing his job to Garrett Hartley despite missing three kicks in the last two weeks.
Coach Sean Payton said the problems haven't been Carney's alone, placing some of the blame on snapper Jason Kyle and holder Mark Brunell as well. Dynasty leaguers will have to keep carrying both Saints kickers for the time being.

Dang, I'm in the same boat as you. I used Carney to replace Gostoswki (bye week) and I ended up losing by -1. Dropped Carney the next day.

Good news for Carney owners ...

Garrett Hartley-K- Saints Nov. 6 - 5:31 pm et

Saints K Garrett Hartley injured his foot on the practice field this week and is listed as doubtful for Week 9.

This won't help his chances of surpassing John Carney. Carney is likely to finish out 2009 as the Saints' starter, with Hartley taking over in 2010.
