Apparently it was stepped on by Magloire in the Portland game, making it worse again.

Ray is going to get a second opinion and could decide within the next 48 hours if he will shut it down for the rest of the way.

Brace yourselves for bad news if you own Allen, and consider adding Damien Wilkins or Earl Watson.

I think Allen owners (including myself) dodged the bullet the last time. I'm not so sure it will happen again.

Agreed. Another miracle is probably not coming down the pipe for us. We all knew the situation was tenuous.

On a side-note, I saw the play where he aggravated the injury versus Portland. Magloire stomped on his hurt ankle (by accident I'm sure). Still, I can't help but resent Magloire and his stone hands and feet right now... he probably just knocked Ray out of the regular season.

We should know soon.

any updates on this from insiders? it would be nice to scoop up a replacement (Wilkins?) before the word is made public, if necessary.

There's not much of an update to give right now, but I did read all the articles on Ray this morning in the Seattle newspapers. Here's what's new:

* The team doctor weighed in that Ray should get the season-ending surgery now when he was in pain after the Portland game.
* The same team doctor told Ray that he couldn't make the injury any worse by playing on it when Ray asked him if that was an issue.
* Ray's right knee is sore from over-compensating for the sore left ankle.
* Ray seems concerned that he'll be "giving up" on his teammates if he sits when he could still play. Collison is quoted as saying "We'll love it if he plays, be we won't take it personally if he can't go."
* Ray received a second opinion from an ankle specialist at Duke University yesterday, but it's not expected to reveal anything new.
* The decision is ultimately in Ray's hands if continues to play, given that it's his pain threshold and he can't worsen the ankle by playing on it.

... so it's just up to Ray if he is going to hang up his sneakers.

I watched the interview with Ray during the Washington game. He really doesn't like talking about quitting. Whenever the interviewers asked him about it, he could barely get himself to say "yeah, season-ending surgery is a possibility."

I think Ray is just genuinely a hardworking, good guy - if there were any reason for him to play right now, early surgery wouldn't even be a question.

JCP, thanks for consolidating the updates.

if the Sonics have no playoff hopes, then I can understand why it might make sense for Ray to shut it down. but I think he has the fire that makes him want to compete if he's at all physically able, so at this point I'm hoping he sticks it out for the rest of the season.

From the Seattle PI:

"
Sonics guard Ray Allen will miss a second consecutive game tonight with left ankle inflammation and the shooting guard flew to Los Angeles on Friday morning for a second opinion. It is still not known whether Allen will opt for season-ending surgery.

Allen was scheduled to see Dr. Richard Ferkel, who performed surgery on Allen's right ankle in November 2003, and he will pool the opinions of Ferkel, Sonics team doctor Richard Zorn and specialist at Duke University, who has X-rays of both of Allen's ankles.

Allen is not scheduled to travel to Durham, N.C. to see the Duke specialists. He could not find a suitable flight, so he decided to visit Ferkel, who removed bone and cartilage fragments from Allen's right ankle. Allen missed 26 games following that surgery.

"He sent his pictures down to Duke but couldn't get there, so he's going to see a second opinion," general manager Rick Sund said. "We'll go from there when we get more information."

Allen has already been diagnosed with a large bone spur in his left ankle and has been told by doctors that whether he plays depends on his pain threshold. Surgery appears inevitable and Allen said Wednesday that he wants to have both ankles repaired to prevent any potential future discomfort.

He missed nine games in December with a bone bruise in his right ankle and tonight's contest with Minnesota will be the third he sits out with left ankle issues. He is the Sonics' leading scorer at 26.4 points per game.

Damien Wilkins will start in place of Allen."

how is ray allen tougher than pierce? pierce gets hammered night in and night out and is barely missed 2 or 3 games for the last 7 years running. pierce goes to the lane twice as much as allen and takes a beating. im not saying allen isnt tough i just want to know what youre basing your opinion on?

i was only referring to now, not the past 7 years

do you see ray allen lobbying to be shut down for the season...? (i know Pierce is dealing with elbow and foot issues as well, but getting poked in the eye and a fat lip are what precipitated his request)

Allen's doing the opposite even though Seattle's as out of it as Boston is...
brockr11
the difference is that boston has the 2nd worse record and i believe hes being pushed by management to sit so they can increase all chances for ping pong balls.
