I spent all my money (100m) and this what I have so far in the free transfer period. I went heavy in the middle as you can see with the Liverpool and Arsenal half-back sensations
Keeper
1: Captain David "Clean Sheets" James ©
Backfield
2: Ferdinand
3: Laursen
4: Lescott
5: Meite
Midfield
6: Fabregas
7: Barry
8: Gerrard
9: Dempsey
Strikers
10: Santa Cruz
11: Agbonlahor
Subs (aka cheap talent)
12: Schwarzer Goalkeeper
13: Miller Forward
14: Barmby Midfielder
15: McShane Defender
What say you?

Sub out a defender for Miller.
You can use:
5-4-1
4-5-1
4-4-2
4-3-3
3-5-2
3-4-3
I like the 3-4-3 because defenders almost exclusively rely on clean sheet points, and those who are most likely to get them on a regular basis are also the toughest to fit in the budget. I was able to spend on Lescott and Ferdinand because I got cheap value in Lauren and Melchiot.
There are enough 15-goal scorers at the Forward position at decent value that you can afford 3 good ones without spending a ton. That allows you to spread money across the midfield where the most consistent points (and highest scorers) are found....the QB's of fantasy soccer.

I agree with the idea of taking one of the defenders out and adding in a forward for the reasons Timmah! states. Defenders can score you some points, but I like the 3-4-3.
Other than that, I'm not of much help. Sorry!

Sounds like you know enough to put a team together.....even if you don't make all the right moves at first, the season is 9 months long!

In the interest of making things enteratining, I've decided to start the season by not following my own advice......the Chargers are going to go with a 3-5-2 to start the season:
------------------------Howard-----------------------------
--------Lescott--------Johnson--------Ferdinand----------
Fabregas----Downing----Dempsey----Young----Bentley
-------------Santa Cruz----------JO-----------------------
Subs: Schwarzer, KITS, Melchiot, Lauren
Kitson getting transferred to Stoke from Reading was nice for the fantasy leaguers.....double-digit scoring capability for the price of a backup midfielder.....or Clint Dempsey!

That's an interesting looking lineup.....very nice.
FYI, you'll be able to view each club's lineup after each Gameweek. They're not visible beforehand so as to allow owners to set lineups without the competition looking over their shoulders.
At this point, it's safe to say that Mark Schwarzer is this year's winner of the Marcus Hahnemann Cheap Keeper Award. I fear the week that any of us actually ahve to start him.....

Cool, welcome to the show.
I will not unveil my latest lineup until the season starts (I tweak it almost everyday anyway)

Even if they don't, they'll be replaced for you.
I left Fabregas in my lineup, knowing he might not play....too bad my first sub, Kitson, didn't score.
Clint Dempsey may as well not have played....10 minutes only gets me a point.
