Erick Aybar Offseason Outlook 2010

Any one have any projections?? I believe he will be leading off this year for a team that loves to run. Obviously he offers nothing in the power department. Is .300-90 runs- 25+ stolen bases reachable???

It's funny that you gave it only 18 minutes before saying "NO one can add anything??" lol

Aybar should provide pretty good value this year IMO. If he maintains the leadoff spot (he may lose it some days to Maicer Izturis, depending on how much playing time they give him with Brandon Wood in the fold), he should be good for .290+ and 85+ runs. If he learns to harness his speed and pick and choose his spots with stealing, he's got the potential for 25-30 or more SBs. And don't be so quick to dismiss his power. 10 HR would be pretty solid production from a SS. Basically I'd say Jimmy Rollins lite, but drafted in like the late rounds.

He could easily steal 30+ bases annually IMO. His problem, however, is he just isn't a very savvy runner. Even going back to his minor league career he didn't have a good feel for it. Granted, with how often the Angels like to run, I could see him approach near 30 SB's, but will do so with about 13 CS to go along with it. One thing is for sure, with Abreu set to hit 2nd, he'll have PLENTY of opportunities to try and steal considering how many pitches Abreu sees every AB

For projection sakes, I'd say a .290 BA is well within reach considering his contact rate. 10 hr's seems like a longshot, I'd say more around 8 tops, but he should provide 25+ doubles and 10+ triples and should be able to score 90+ runs with definitely 20 SB's(with room for more)

If Brandon Wood comes and starts putting up big time numbers than we could see a time share at 2b/ss between aybar, izturis and howie..

And btw am I the only one that still mistakenly calls that team the Anaheim angels?

Being a fan of them, I just call them the Angels. Much easier than having to worry about whatever their name is. I'm not that old and yet I've already seen them go through 3 name changes

Thanks for the responses!

Whats the difference? saying that or saying the second half when it really isn't. Its usually 10-12 game into the second half. I'm not doing the math on that one but why not just say after or before the AS break? Never understood that one.

I'm very high on Aybar this year, he's def my favorite 'late' SS option. I agree with a lot that's been said, he has elite speed but hasn't shown a great feel for SBs yet, but fantasy value is a lot about opportunity and it looks like he clearly has that heading into this year, with the leadoff spot his to lose. The projections that I've seen here IMO are his floor if he gets 550-600 ABs.

.285/85/7/55/25-.310/108/10/60/32

The guy had 500 AB last season and only 14 SB with 7 CS. In over 1000 career AB he has 26 SB and 13 CS. He is just not a very good basestealer and projecting him for 20 + just seems crazy.

He's still sitting on my FA wire because I picked Ian Desmond over him and we already know what aybar can do. I think his ceiling is .315 10 20. I'll likely pick him up if Desmond flops.

I agree I do not see much of of an improvement with Aybar the Angels are a weaker team this year and I think everyone in this lineup and on the pitching staff will suffer throughout this season.

Dude was hitting .230 when I finally cut him two weeks ago with a whopping 8 RBI. Since then he's been on fire with a couple of 4-5 games. Pr*ck. Maybe it was Izturis return from the DL that lit a fire under Aybar's arse. Itzy did hit leadoff one game when Aybar was benched. Regardless, so far Aybar (and the Angels' offense) has been a disappointment and I wouldn't recomend him other than as an off-day sub or if you're in a deep league and need a MI. He doesn't contrbute in enough categories.

Considering the constant state of Flux my SS and MI slots have been in this year (thanks to drafting Rollins and Beckham to man those spots), Aybar is taunting me on the wire right now.

I know as soon as I pick him up he will promptly got 0 for his next 12 and the guy I drop will get hot again.

I'm going to keep an eye on him and see if he can sustain this success a little longer...

First off... don't pick him up if it results in him going 0 fer...

Second, I have had no issues with Aybar. I play in a 12 team keeper with MI SS and 2B so it's relatively deep there. Either way, Aybar hasn't been that bad for me. He gets me the occasional SB, the rare HR, and gives me some AVG. He's nothing special, but if he's been pretty consistant as a .250 hitter with some run potential.

He had an OPS of .800 in the second half last year. I suspect that he will have a similar type season which by SS standards will put him in the top 5 in the AL. There is no current SS in the AL with an OPS greater than 800.

Just reported that he has a hyper extended knee and the Angels are saying he is day to day. Going to have to wait till tomorrow to hear more

They didnt mention the extent of the injury, but I saw the replay on baseball tonight and it was pretty gruesome. It was a bull**** slide by McGhee bc he was upset with being plunked in the ribs on his AB right before it. Looking at it on TV, I wouldn't be shocked if he broke his leg, or tore his knee/ACL up.

Wow, total BS move by McGehee.....Someone may be going head hunting at him tomorrow.....

Just caught the highlight. That was a very cheap slide that was totally unnecessary. That looks like a end of season injury or at least 2 months.
