Recommended Posts

There was a Heat/Knicks game in February at MSG,Knicks shot 36 FT's,Heat shot 9. Knicks were favorite by 4 & won by 6. Guess who was the ref?

Remember that Donaghy's name was uncovered as a result of a long-running organized crime investigation. The mob was the focus, not Donaghy. This is total speculation, but I imagine evidence could possibly include recorded phone calls & a paper trail. But it's speculation based on previous mob busts.

Paperwork that the FBI has, allegedly has someone referred to consistently as "the ref". Apparently at first they thought it was just a codename or something for someone involved with the gambling

even if he made certain calls to shave points how are they gonna prove that? if he doesnt admit anything i cant see how they can. he can just say that he made a bad call.

they are really digging deep into the games hes ref'd...they show the following:

1) One of the highest rates of blown whistles by a ref (Knicks/Heat game was an example...plus he called techs and ejections on both Heat coaches...NY covered by 2 after shooting an astounding # of free throws)

2) Games he ref'd had an unusual amount of line movement (heavy action one way)

Now it sounds as if hes ready to sing againist the mobsters (fearing for his life) or there were other refs involved.....Witness Protection Program baby!!!!

I just read this on the rotoworld news line:

Ryan Gomes-F- Celtics Jul. 22 - 12:12 pm et

The NBA launched an investigation over Ryan Gomes’ comments after the Celtics had clinched the second-worst record.

Gomes spoke with someone from the security department within the league. "The guy read my quotes to me and then asked me to explain what I meant," Gomes said. "I told him, and things seemed OK. I still don’t feel like I said anything to jeopardize us as a team or jeopardize myself." He's being investigated for saying, "The players weren’t thinking about the lottery and all that, but reality is reality. Now that our position in the lottery is set, hopefully we can go out and win some games."

Source: Boston Herald

I could imagine someone over the bureau having to watch all these games he officiated. How much would that suck for the Celtics that not only they cheated in the NBA to get the lottery and still didn't get Oden or Durant. haha what a fixed league.

As bad as this is, it's really probably blown out of proportion if it's just one ref involved. Yeah the evidence is there that there were some major indifferences in the games he officiated, and yeah, people will always have a reference point when complaining about the refs from here on out. But if it comes out that there were multiple players or refs involved in this scheme, then it'll take many years for the NBA to overcome corruption like this.

donaghy better turn himself in while he is still alive..

sad part is this makes you wonder about all refs, in all sports...

he is bringing pride to his philly area alma maters, Cardinal O'hara high and Villanova...interesting to hear a couple people who went to H.S. with him call local talk radio say they werent surprised to hear this about him, and that he paid someone to take his SAT's while in high school..

then a story today in paper about having his membership revoked from local golf club for bad behavior, going in his car after a mailman who accidentally knocked his recyling box over, and hitting his neighbors houses with golf balls from his back yard...

havent heard any of those "he's a nice guy and will be proved innocent" supporters you would normally find...

There is a link to a very good video about this subject

Just took a look at this game 3 line movement, and the Spurs opened as a 4.5 point fav, and the line went DOWN to 4 at tip off....so the money wasnt heavily moving in any direction that night....

that vid didnt really show much IMO. he didnt make half those calls/non-calls (unless you think the other refs are involved or he had influence over how the other refs called the game.) IMO there wasnt any egregious calls other than that ginobili call that was called a foul like 3 seconds after the play. those other ticky tack fouls or non-calls happen in just about every game.

the NBA game is the hardest game to officiate cuz everything happens so fast and there's constant motion. there's also no instant replay to stop live action (other than buzzer beaters). it also doesnt help that there are new rules, interpretations and mandates (different points of emphasis for refs) popping up every yr. unless there's some recorded evidence or documentation, i dont see how they can prove by watching game footage that donaghy shaved points.

this is possibly on the same level of a lockout in terms of driving fans away from the game

Looks like he'll plead guilty (Rotoworld:)

Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy plans to plead guilty in federal court on Wednesday to charges alleging he bet on games he officiated, a person familiar with situation said.

Donaghy is expected to turn himself in tomorrow in Brooklyn federal court, although the source remained anonymous and was not authorized to speak about the case. Aug. 14 - 9:26 pm et

Here's a partial quote of a blurb from rotoworld, info from ESPN.com:

"Donaghy is said to be ready to give prosecutors as many as 20 names of other NBA officials and will detail their involvement in some form of gambling activity, although it sounds like the biggest offense likely coming is betting in a casino."

Now my question is, why does rotoworld put this info under a Cleveland Cavaliers headline and with a smiling picture of LeBron? B)

Well, pretty much that's exactly why. They have to put information under a player, if I'm not mistaken. So info on the NBA goes to Lebron. Nothing to do with the scandal, just that he pretty much is the face of the NBA.
