I'm logging the draft results as they come in, I'll be doing some basic statistical analysis a little later today once the team rosters have been completed. I'll also post the data I have in the various groupings, just so nobody else tries to go ahead and format the rosters (saves you some work).

Nice work everyone. 7-8 day mock raises the bar for all mocks going forward.

Good luck to those playing it out, especially my GM Doc J. I will be keeping tabs.

I can't speak for the mods but I believe they will probably move one or both threads to the Your League forums, that's where I found last years.

I've taken over Cowbel's team, just making it official.

Next year I want to draft my own team tho, I'm more than active enough so I will definitely be waiting for you guys to make your picks.. don't keep me waiting too long either! ;)

This is correct. Congrats on completing the mock draft in a very timely fashion, great participation all-around. Since you guys have decided to play this mock draft out in a real league, this thread will be moved to the "Your League" Thread section in Off-Topic.

http://pastebin.com/88nG0HQu

----------

My reasoning for making the above trade (since this league is also supposed to in part be a learning thing for everyone):

Okay, so first off, the primary Friends and Family league that I play in with my close friends is a Yahoo! league, TD-heavy, non-PPR, and it's based off mostly older Yahoo! scoring settings so there are 3 WR's in the starting lineup and No Flex position.

Because of that, I was drafting in this league with a modified version of a framework that I'd intended to utilize in my Friends-and-Family League during last season's draft.

That basic outline was to see what I could come out with if I went WR early, basically trying to grab 2 or 3 "Elite" WR's (or at least ones with an extremely high ceiling that can go off for 150+ yard games).

In 2011, I believe you could definitely have managed either Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald, or Calvin Johnson and Andre Johnson if you had your initial draft position in the later half of Round 1. You'd spend your late Round 1 pick on Calvin, and take Fitzgerald (or at worst, Andre or Roddy) on the swing in early Round 2.

That changes this season because I've actually seen Fitzgerald go at the tail end of Round 1 in a couple of drafts, and Calvin potentially goes in the first 6 picks. I don't even like Fitzgerald/Andre/Roddy AS much as I did last season either.

Then throw in the fact that in this mock draft, instead of picking in the later half of Round 1 like my strategy was geared towards, I had the #2 overall pick. That's why I said that I was utilizing a "modified" version. I wasn't actually sure at all whether or not it would work.

But I went ahead and tried to follow it the best I could, taking Calvin Johnson with my first round (#2 overall) pick, and then just waiting to see what I could possibly manage to land with my late Round 2 pick.

Ideally, I would have liked to get either Gronkowski or a good RB in Round 2, but those players were all off the board by the time the draft finally got back around to me. I really didn't see anything of superb value remaining in play that I'd be confident in spending a Round 2 pick on, so I went and took Stafford since I knew there was almost no chance he'd make it beyond Gottagetthewin's bookend picks in Rounds 2/3. Gottagetthewin then made his picks (DeMarco Murray with pick 2.12 / Tony Romo with pick 3.1), and then I had a single pick at 3.2 to make before I had to wait all the way until pick 4.11 to make my next selection.

Because my short list at WR after Calvin Johnson was basically Julio Jones (who I totally thought I'd be able to land with my 2nd Round pick, if not my pick at 3.2), then a little bit of a tossup between Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant, I'd already missed out on Julio Jones so I didn't want to risk missing out on Thomas or Dez. I reached for Thomas a little bit since I knew it was almost certain one or both of them would be gone by the time my next pick came up in late Round 4. I was correct in that assumption. Dez Bryant was taken at 4.4, a good 7 picks before my next turn.

Because of this, my initial strategy to grab 3 of what I felt were the "top" WR's was kind of shot at that point.

No Julio, no Dez, my WR-first strategy was kind of broken. So I had to start going offscript, taking what I could. Thus my pick of Antonio Gates @ 4.11, then my pick of Jahvid Best @ 5.2, and then Shonn Greene @ 6.11. I basically went for best available, in a sense, as far as the positions I had in my starting lineup that remained unfilled.

With all my spots except FLEX now filled up, my pick @ 7.2 came around. The main WR remaining that I'd been interested in taking a flier on from an upside perspective had been DJax, but he'd been removed from the board during the previous round (6.7). Because of this, I had a feeling that I needed to once again shift my strategy away from simply players to fill my bench for depth, to players that I thought could *potentially* directly replace one of the ones in my starting lineup.

So, my next selections were:

Coby Fleener

Randy Moss

Brian Quick

I wanted the "replacement" player to be able to replace at least ~80% of the value of the starter he'd be swapped in for.

So I figure with his upside, Coby Fleener can come close to performing at least about 80% as well (statistically) as Antonio Gates.

Randy Moss (and if not him, then my next-man-up thinking, Brian Quick) could hopefully come close to performing at least about 80% as well as Demaryius Thomas.

So that was my thinking with those specific picks. I wanted them to be able to replace those players because now my primary strategy was to focus on trading to re-balance the deficiencies in my starting lineup.

At that point in the draft, my starting lineup looked like this:

QB: Matthew Stafford

WR1: Calvin Johnson

WR2: Demaryius Thomas

RB1: Jahvid Best

RB2: Shonn Greene

TE: Antonio Gates

FLEX: ?

Judging solely by the fact that I hadn't yet picked a player for my FLEX spot yet, obviously that's technically my "weakest" spot in my starting lineup right there. But for the skill positions, I'd have to say that while I am fairly strong across the board, RB is almost certainly my weakest. Best has the upside to have some crazy weeks (it is PPR so Best gets a bit of an edge in this format with the Lion's heavy passing attack), but he may be in more of a timeshare this season than last with Mikel LeShoure seeing time on the field. That could also potentially negatively effect TD production, though I still expect Best, with his upside, to have a surprisingly good year. That is, of course, if his other knock, concussions, doesn't bite him.

So all those red flags are about my RB1. My RB2, while I'm not particularly sore about drafting, wasn't close to my ideal RB obviously, especially for PPR. I like that he's the feature back, and I was able to pick him up in the Round I did, but I knew that without a doubt, Shonn Greene was the first player in my starting lineup that I'd want to try to upgrade via trade after the draft was over.

Primarily, I wanted to upgrade him to a RB that was more or less his team's feature back with a heavy workload, but also was a pass-catcher. To do that, I knew I'd have to include at least one or two other players from other positions. Because of the depth at WR, I knew that even though I was very high on Demaryius Thomas, I could continue to draft receivers and then dangle Thomas to teams as tradebait. Similarly, Antonio Gates became tradebait #2, since I was fairly confident that I had a good sleeper pick in Coby Fleener to replace Gates.

That's the primary reason I reached for Coby Fleener in Round 7, because I was more certain about his potential upside than any other remaining TE (Fred Davis, Brandon Pettigrew [would also have stacked too many Lions in my starting lineup], Jacob Tamme, Tony Gonzalez, Jermaine Gresham, Brent Celek, Kellen Winslow, Owen Daniels, Dustin Keller, Heath Miller, and Jared Cook [actually surprised he was the last TE to get taken, as much of a publicized sleeper pick as he is]).

So, that was the idea, reach a little bit to guarantee that I got Coby Fleener, so that I could trade Gates and replace him with Fleener.

Likewise, Randy Moss and Brian Quick were subsequently drafted in the following two rounds to take the place Demaryius Thomas.

At this point, it was Round 10. Pretty much all the RB's were gone (RB's taken after my Round 10 pick: Felix Jones, Mark Ingram, Rashard Mendenhall, Stevan Ridley, Isaiah Pead, Jacquizz Rodgers, Tim Hightower, Mikel LeShoure), but that wasn't entirely concerning to me, since I was pretty confident I was about to take Best's handcuff (Kevin Smith) and my plan was to trade for another RB instead of trying to strike gold on one in the later rounds of the draft. So taking that into account, and the fact that it was again, already Round 10, the easiest position to strike gold on from that point on was, imo, WR. So I took Jonathan Baldwin, who is either a big game or an injury to Bowe/Breaston away from making a pretty big impact on that team. Finally, I went with Kevin Smith to guarantee my RB1 in case of injury to Best.

Took 2 good DEF's in the next 2 rounds with my bookend'ish picks to maximize playing matchups every week. *Potential* for including one in a trade as well for slightly added value.

Took a last-minute shot on Ramses Barden since we're so early in the offseason, I didn't want to risk not getting him if he does indeed finally pan out in camp and become the Giants 3rd WR, especially with Hakeem Nicks already having a fractured foot.

Lastly took a "good" Kicker (NE) at the top of the round.

====================================================================================

So now with my draft strategy explained as I was formulating it, with the trade angle inserted, I hope you all better understand why I made some of the "reaches" I did.

This trade fixes my RB deficiency in the PPR-sense, since DeMarco Murray is likely to be doing a decent amount of receiving this season according to some recent reports. The more I read about Shonn Greene, the more I thought that he really was a lot better than he looked on paper, so I did a lot of research on Murray before I sent out my waves of offers. The more I read about Murray, the more I liked him (a lot more than when I initially passed on Murray at the tail end of Round 2 in favor of Stafford). I actually think I like Murray's ceiling more than Marshawn Lynch's, who I would have originally contemplated picking over Stafford if he'd fallen to my position at the end of Round 2.

I give up Demaryius Thomas and Brian Quick, but that was basically planned all along from the middle of the draft. Hopefully Randy Moss or Jonathan Baldwin (or if I get lucky, Barden?) can fill in that WR2 spot efficiently enough. Moss has continued to get rave reviews on his conditioning, skills, and work ethic in camp, and it seems they might let Alex Smith actually use his receiving weapons this season a bit more, so that certainly contributed to me feeling confident enough right now to make the trade.

Also, as a small bonus, hopefully acquiring Seabass can give me another subtle point boost (or even just some outrageous weeks from my kicker position). Even if it's only an average of a point or two extra a week, or the potential of an additional 6 points during some random week, I try to make my "peripheral" positions as productive as I possibly can, since it's typically super cheap to do so (you see I was able to package it into this trade for Murray, "upgrading" imo two positions of mine, as opposed to just one).

Post-trade, Antonio Gates remains in my TE spot, and Fleener or Jonathan Baldwin will man my FLEX spot, for now. I have some more ideas for future lineup changes, but it remains to be seen how that will all pan out.
