Brandon Jacobs 2012 Season Outlook

Back from Injury:

Brandon Jacobs has pronounced himself fully recovered from his preseason knee injury.

"I'm ready to play. It's nothing now, it's all gone now," Jacobs said. "There's a little kinks I've got to run out but I feel good. I feel good about my explosiveness, I've got fresh legs." Jacobs was being used as a short-yardage specialist before going down with the injury in mid-August.

Any idea how 49er will split the carries? Will he split some early down, red zone carries?

I think he starts out as short yardage/goal line back. I can't really see any early down work tho

This sounds insane and maybe even dumb, but I'm starting him this week (as of now, unless a trade I have in the works for Reggie Bush pans out). Have Demarco on a bye, then FJax/Spiller @SF as my only other options beside Bilal Powell.

Way I look at it, SF should certainly be nursing a big 2nd half lead, he should have some TD opportunities and maybe the 49ers will work him out a little bit to get him back in game shape.

It's a shot in the dark but the matchup is nice. Funny that I'm starting a guy who is starting in ZERO % of all Yahoo leagues. Times are tough.

I'm in the same boat but with Hillis instead of Powell.. Hope he can get a couple of tds.

Same situation here, with Murray on bye, has to choose between him, Draughn, and Casey.

Talked to a long time 49er fans. It seems that Haughbour can use anybody at goaline but short yardage should belong to Jacob. I read somewhere 49er is not successful at 3rd and 1. That's why he signed him at first place.

Really wish I didn't waste a starting spot on Ryan Williams when I could have slotted Jacobs who may get a goaline TD this week.

DUMB. DUMB. DUMB.

What do you guys think his workload will be each week like 7 carries maybe?

I was hoping someone else could answer that... I read the SF newspapers online to see if I could dig up some info on this, but really can't get a read on it. But in THIS week (hopefully the only one I have to use him) I can see it possibly being a rout, and they should sit Gore, then split carries between Jacobs and Hunter... with Hunter likely getting most but just give the rock to Jacobs around paydirt. Also, that could be a worn down Buff Defense in the 4th quarter and Harbaugh might want to see what he's got in Jacobs.

Well, one desperate owner just hoping, anyways. If he had 20 yards and a TD he would fulfill any expectations I have.

He is ready to play. Game time decision though, so make sure you follow the news on him. I have bye week issues myself, so i am considering one of Hunter/Gore. My reasoning is that they will probably get a lead against the Bills and then run it more often with Jacobs, test him out on the short yardage, give him the goal line looks, especially on 3rd down (this should happen even with Gore in) They already know what they have with Hunter. It's a tough call though. Hunter is more than capable of breaking one in garbage time.

Lots of bodies in the backfield, Gore, Hunter, Jacobs, they drafted Lamichael James high. You figure Gore 15, Hunter 7, Jacobs 5 is probably around what the average split will be on a given week average wise I would imagine. If I was going to put an over/under on TD's for Jacobs I'd say 6.

Guess who he plays in week 6...me thinks he might play just little extra harder.

Ya know ... not for nuttin', BUT ...

Jacobs was ridiculously lame in short yardage situations back here for the G-Men. Oh, sure, he converted a bunch over the years, but, more often than not, he was a major letdown in that department. Hell, Bradshaw was a better goal line back over the past few years.

Softest 260 lb. RB to ever come down the pike. He will occasionally move piles by attrition; but this guy is not/never was/never will be a Jerome Bettis/Mike Alstott type short yardage specialist.

Caveat Emptor here, kids .... he is not all he's cracked up to be.

FWIW, this didn't sound too encouraging (from SF beat writer):

  • do you expect to see Jacobs used more against a large D line

Brandon Jacobs hasn't been used yet this season. But he looks healthy for his debut. I'm hesitant to think he'll actually play this week just because I haven't seen enough of him in practice (other than warmups). They could use short-yardage help, however.

lol i thought someone might get a kick out that video from Kill Bill, its quite fitting for Jacobs now that Hunter is out :P

But seriously though, anyone think the TD vulture himself is worth a grab?

49ers suspended RB Brandon Jacobs is reportedly saying that he'll only play for one team going forward -- the Giants. The 49ers likely reconsidered waiving Jacobs when they realized his intentions; to bad-boy his way out of San Francisco in hopes of a Giants reunion. So rather than cut him, the Niners stuck him on their reserve/suspended list and Jacobs won't be eligible to play during the final three weeks of the regular season.

I don't agree with this move at all.

If the 49ers want to prevent the Giants from winning games, it seems like giving Brandon Jacobs to the Giants would be the surest method of achieving that goal.
