Return Yardage League Strategy

13 posts in this topic

Anyone have a system to help predict return yardage? Yahoo's predictions always seem to be way too high.

I've started returners before and then end up with a couple kick returns that are touchbacks and maybe a few fair caught punts and end up no points.

Just looking to see how other people gauge returners and their value in return yardage leagues.

I look at the player's opponent. If they are going against a high powered offense that will score a lot, more kickoffs will occur during the game. More returns for your return specialist.

You also have to consider dome vs outdoor play, especially as winter comes. Theoretically there should be more returnable kickoffs when wind is a factor.

Domes much easier to boot it out of the endzone.

With punts you never know - every one could be a fair catch. Or go for 2 yards then tackled.

A player that fields both kicks and punts should usually flirt with 100 yards. With a ceiling of ~200 yards if they break one long one or have a few 40+ yard returns like David Wilson the other week.

Anyone know where you can find data on kickers and touchbacks? Something that shows which kickers allow the most kick return opportunities

I'd look at which kickers have kicked the fewest 50+er's. Presumably they don't have big legs and thus are less likely to kick it out of the end zone.

go espn.com then go to nfl then stats. then go into the kickers and they have touchbacks.

Good call. They also have OPP return yardage and attempts- Top 3 in attempts against are:

Giants

Texans

Saints

I lined Cobb up against the Saints earlier this year figuring he would be in for a big day. He ended up with 88 yards returning that game..which is OK but we get bonus points for a 100.

I wonder if it's a good strategy to trade away someone like Harvin? I've had returners in the past and it seems like once they return 1 or 2 early in the season teams kick away from them later in the year and return yards decline.

I've had Josh Cribbs, Devin Hester, etc. and if I remember right that seemed to be a trend that return yards decreased as the season goes along.

I went out of my way to get Harvin and Sproles. . I tool them with my 2nd and 3rd round picks. They are guaranteed 13+ a game for me. I also went for occasional returners like Decker, missed out on Antonio Brown. Otherwise i drafted regularly
