Justin Upton 2013 Outlook

A lot of smoke about the Rangers and their pursuit of Justin Upton, so much that this unverified tweet has come out....

Peter Gammons@pgammo

If you don't believe the multi-team Upton trade talk, Wednesday night a Rangers official called an Astros officisl and said, "we got Upton."

Now if that tweet is true. Who did the Rangers give up? Elvis? Olt? And why hasn't the deal come out publicly? Fell apart? Waiting for another signing?

If Upton is going to Texas, it has to be either Profar or Andrus coming back to the Diamondbacks. I don't see why the Diamondbacks are selling him. He still has huge potential and is young. His best years are still ahead of him.

if he's switching leagues, i'll be passing on him in 2013.

don't hitters typically improve going from NL to AL, and vice versa for pitchers?

Ask Adam Dunn that.

If Upton goes TEX you'd think uptick in performance for a few reasons. Change of scenery, better lineup, winning, even better hitters ballpark to name a few.

Az acquired their SS in the Bauer deal - I assume this means they can now move Upton without having to acquire a SS in return. Could open the bidding process to more teams now. I don't know if Olt/Martin Perez is enough from the Rangers. I hope the Tigs are still interested and make an offer.

If thats all he can get for Bauer, he needs to back away from the idea of trading Upton.

Towers is saying it's highly unlikely he'll deal Upton now that he has his SS.

I will say this for ARI fans - if Towers had to screw up one trade, better to screw up the trade with Bauer than with J-Up.

Jon Daniels: How about Elvis Andrus for J-Up?

Towers: Hmm, maybe - I'd like to get rid of Bauer, though, what did you have in mind if I offered you both?

Daniels: Elvis, a 25 year-old 1B who hasn't been as good as your current guy, a SS who has limited O-ceiling at age 23, and a LHP relief guy?

Towers: Done!

OK, back to J-Up - the one piece of good news - he's never dogged it unlike his brother BJ, and when he's motivated and healthy - scary to watch. You have to always worry about injury (the non-throwing shoulder always crops up every other year, and last year, the wrist really sapped his power). Get him mad & motivated - watch out. The real question is whether he stays in a Snakes uni the whole season.

(Because, not sure they have their cornerstone SS - yes, they have their 2013 SS...but wow).

this organization is nuts. how do they just hang their number one player out to dry for the better part of a year, hang a for sale sign around his neck, stage a semi-auction and then think they can say, nah, we good, we keeping him ... yeah, this'll turn out well.

Them keeping him actually seems like worst case scenario.

I wouldn't draft him cause he is likely to mail in the season.

Im betting he puts up a good show in hopes of getting moved before the deadline. HE cannot be happy with the way hes been handled, from last years Gibby issues to him being dangled all offseason. Not ideal treatment of your best offensive player.

J-Up gets a lot of heat for perceived attitude issues from FBB owners - but unlike his brother BJ (who has dogged it on many occasions and was rightfully called out), history has never shown him to do anything but go full out (if anything, sometimes tries to do too much).

If he's healthy, I see a huge bounceback - and then even Towers couldn't panic and get low value (could he?), or ARI FO mends fences, and everyone's happier. Honestly, the main issue I have is to ensure he's back to full health.

I agree, his attitude has never been the issue, his willingness to play and play hard and through maladies to me, is whats has casued most of the backlash against him as when he does this his numbers slip. But by all appearances he appears to be a great effort guy, which makes Gibbys handling of him last year all the more confusing to me.

Man, I know the Snakes have Gregorius as their SS now, but with Hamilton off the FA market, you'd think TEX would have caved to Towers' demands for Profar now for J-Up.

Theres been some discussion that TEX might still push for Upton with that type of deal. I think theyve lost all leverage here and even if they can get Upton now (unlikely) they will get fleeced but might have to to save face. As it is ARI seems to think they solved their SS issue, time will tell but you have to think Texas makes a push for Upton, might be worth going after Swisher too!

Ross just signed, Upton or Kubel have to be in the works to be traded.

Absolutely. Have to wonder if Jon Daniels is reconsidering the Snakes' original offers, and if Towers is willing to reconsider his stance on Gregorius being the SS of the future. Hard to believe Kubel will have a ton of trade value, given his age, and his limited D - if you're going to sign Ross, seems to be a prelude to upgrading the rest of your team via trade (if Kubel can net you a decent SP or MI, great - otherwise, hard to see how this isn't a prelude to a J-Up trade, since it jams up the OF with Parra, J-Up, Eaton & Kubel already there).

It's dangerous to watch Upton highlight clips. More than any other player, he looks so great crushing the ball, I lose all objectivity and get convince in a second that 'oh yea, this guy is gonna tear up the world like no one before him'

all-world talent, just can't understand the inconsistency. lack of focus?

Maybe. If he can ever get by the inconsistency issues, he could be a beast. Anyone have an estimate as to where his ADP is right now? If he's not being drafted with the sure fire studs, then I would definitely take a chance on him. We saw his floor last year. It's frustrating, but still serviceable. His ceiling is so high, you'll be kicking yourself if you pass over him and he goes off.

The odds that J-Up is wearing a Snakes uni come Opening Day seem to be shrinking...

http://msn.foxsports...terested-011013

Despite all the PR speak, ARI seems committed to trying and move him. Hopefully, they don't sell super-low as with Bauer.

As a Dynasty owner, obviously I'd love him to be in TEX, but I'm just as happy he has a no-trade clause to SEA.

Rangers are still probably the favorites if he gets traded, but the Mets, Padres, and Orioles have reportedly been looking into making a deal.
