Joey Votto 2013 Outlook

557 posts in this topic

Joey Votto was crushing last year before going down with a knee injury. He came back last year after arthroscopic surgery but clearly wasn't the same as he hit 0 HRs over his final 33 games (5 in the playoffs).

He has recently been quoted as saying he will play in The World Baseball Classic for Canada only if his knee is 100%.

Generally I'd perfer players to not play in The WBC. But in this case with Votto I am hoping he does play in The WBC. As that should confirm his knee is at 100% as well as we can see a bit of what he looks like because last year after the surgery his power numbers took a drastic hit.

Votto has a lot more credibility IMO because he openly admitted his knee wasn't 100 percent when he came back, but he acknowledged his team needed him for the stretch/playoffs. That also lends credibility to the belief he'll be 100 percent for Opening Day, especially if he plays in the WBC (given his statement above). Different sport, but he pulled the anti-Belichik.

Barring re-injury between now & Opening Day, I'd consider him an elite, top 15 talent without hesitation.

Votto is the exact type of player for whom I always develop 'mancrushes': a "pure hitter" who can take nearly as many BBs as he does strike out. AND he has power, to boot!! sign me up!

Similarly, Prince Fielder has evolved into such a hitter. I was shocked to see that he BB'd more than he K's this season. (He may also have done the same thing last year....or came close to it).

But, yeah, Votto is an elite player, IMO, and someone I will reach for in '13 drafts.

I'd feel comfortable drafting him middle 1st.. easy, safe pick.. this guy is reliable as it gets when it comes to playing time. and he always hits for a high avg.. he's the epitome of dependable.

Bullish. This thread will be pretty dull this year barring inner ear infection.

You kind of want threads like this to be dull.

If The Votto Thread blows up it makes me think he either 1. got injured or 2. is slumping and massively under producing.

People have an expectation of a guy like Votto, if he is meeting it there's not much need to talk about him.

Unless you don't own Votto then maybe it's good for your team that he is doing 1 of the two things listed, getting hurt or under producing.

Not many guys who's baseline is around .310-25-100-100-5. I'd say he outperforms all of those. Elite hitter in a great ballpark in a great lineup. I'd have no problems whatsoever with him as my 1st rounder. I'd consider him as early as 5th overall for standard leagues, and higher (3rd or 4th overall) for points leagues.

I agree he will outperform all of these stats, but maybe not the homers. I think he is going to be around that 25 range, but I love him in OBP leagues. Dude just knows how to get on base.

Yea I think 25 is a solid number for him. I don't see him hitting many more than that.

He has averaged 27 over the past 3 seasons while averaging less than 141 games over that span. A full season I'd say he's a lock to go over 25.

He himself admitted that he wasn't healthy in the second half which led to him hitting homers at such a low rate. If healthy 25 is a solid baseline but he can definitely improve upon that. In the first 3 months half he hit 14 homers and had 33 doubles. 33 doubles in 3 months, that's absurd! His iso was well above .250. This guy is an elite hitter all around, including his power.

Like you said 25 is a solid baseline. I'm in an OBP league and votto is by far the number one 1b on my board and that's just with me projecting around 25 homers. I just don't think he will repeat that 37 homer season again. I know the injury sapped his power a bit last year, but I just view him as a great all around hitter. He doesn't need 30 plus homers to make him an elite fantasy player. If he is healthy and plays the full year he will end up being a top ten player in my league even if he only hits 25.

Anyone see the moonshot he hit off Darvish? I think it's safe to say the knee will not be limiting his power numbers much.

There was an interview he did with Fangraphs where he basically said he's going to be in the 25-30 HR range because of his swing plane. He's content with just being an impossible out and not a 35+ HR guy. I mean, there's been more perfect games then Joey Votto infield flies in the last 5 years or so.

Music to my ears. He is gold in OPS leagues

Sounds like Miggy Cabreraexcept Miggy has more power. Miggy could hit 50 HR a season, but takes 35 and a ridiculous average. Love them both.
