RW Community 2013 Mock Draft III

876 posts in this topic

Wanted to see if we could get a mock draft gong Monday. Post below if you want in. If we get 12 people tonight we could start as early as Monday otherwise the following day from when this fills up.

I wanted to go a little deeper in this draft. As I generally play in deeper than 276 player pool leagues.

Based on past experience with other Forum Mock Drafts, here are the rules to keep Mock Drafts helpful for the community at large, and help the Draft move along and complete successfully:

RW COMMUNITY MOCK DRAFT RULES (EDITED 2013)

______________________

1. One Mock Draft at a time, from January to a week before Opening Day. The Main Forum is not the Forum for league creation, but as a vehicle to help general discussion.

2. Members who wish to participate in this Mock Draft will first confirm in descending order if the members who gave their names that they can actually be around or reachable on a regular basis for 7-10 days minimum. Once 12 are confirmed, any still left can be wait-listed for dropouts. If you can't do it, let others do it who can.

3. Two threads will exist for each Mock Draft - a sign-up / discussion thread and a Picks-only thread. All posters are welcome to comment and constructively critique draft picks - but the 12 Draft members make the picks (or their designate / queue picks), barring delays described below. If you want to comment - do so in the Mock Draft thread - and NOT the Mock Draft Pick Thread. That thread will be for picks ONLY.

4. An agreed upon mechanism when delays during peak posting hours should be in place - leaving a pick queue or substitute picker in advance of known absences will go a long way to minimize long delays - but if excessive delays without ETA occur, it's fair for the draft to go with a plan B - which is to allow the league to draft based on need/consensus if an absence of > 3 hours (or by a time designated by the group) prior to the Draft's start. The clock will NOT be applied for overnight / early AM (unless you are all East Coast posters, in which the hours can be modified by unanimous agreement). If 2 or more absences of 3+ hours without pick lists / designated substitute occurs where there is no notice or advance warning given, an owner may be replaced from the wait-list. For Greater Clarity - the 3-hour time limit is meant for occasional absences. It is NOT meant as the rule of law. If owners cannot meet the ability to draft 3-4x in a draft day regularly, they should NOT register - and may be replaced if they cannot meet this commitment first & foremost. As context matters (weekends, later rounds, etc.) - the group will discuss & determine the best way to proceed in repeated absences are occurring.

5. The PM/listing draft picks taken done regularly here really works to keep everyone up to date & promote discussion, so Mock Draft participants also agree to help out with this. To be clear, this means posting if you want to leave a list with someone because you will be away, and if you are about to pick soon. Ask if you don't know who to leave a list with. It also means once you have picked, send a PM to the next owner to let then know they are OTC (on the clock!)

6. All members can post & discuss picks made in the Draft signup & discussion thread - but we leave the picks to the 12 (or their designates/plan B if they are absent), and the picks in the Picks-only thread.

7. Format's for the general community, so 5x5 still rules the day. Formats are chosen to be generalizable to the community at large - so 5x5 standard settings will be used. FOR GREATER CLARITY: Given the popularity of Yahoo & ESPN, these are the formats used for the first 2 drafts. If we get past 2 Mock Drafts, the exact details will be determined prior to each draft, with the 5x5 format remaining to serve the community at large, in keeping with the generalizable theme.

8. Any poster who is not on the list above can submit their name to be wait-listed - we may get drop-outs, and of course, other Mock Drafts remain a possibility - but again, the present Mock completes first, as the Mock is for the general community as a whole, and not simply as a means for practice for the 12 members (otherwise, it would be in another Forum).

A reminder on some of the practices that help keep the draft running smoothly:

1. Make sure to click "Follow this Topic" for the Picks-Only thread - and ensure you get e-mail notifications for topics that you follow. The "Follow This Topic" link is on the upper-right hand side of the 1st post of each page. Your notification settings are in "Your Profile" - look under "Notifications".

2. Copy/pasting the draft order with recent picks and updating your pick is FAR BETTER than posting your team in the Picks-Only thread. Posting your team roster is helpful in the discussion thread - but in the Picks Only thread, it's far more effective to have a draft board updated by round, not by team. If you are on a mobile and can't post the whole list - let others know why it's only 1 player. Whenever you can, post the draft board - because it helps keep everyone's list up-to-date. Also, when you have posted your pick - make sure to PM the owner behind you - a simple "Mock Draft OTC Round X" in title is all that's needed.

3. If you are going to be OTC soon (1-2 picks away) but you know you will be away, leave a pick queue or target list with another drafting member who can't snipe you. If you don't know who to leave this list with - post on the Discussion thread your need to leave a list. This a practice that members in ALL online "slow" drafts do to keep drafts going. It's also the way to get 3-4 rounds in a day done - by not delaying a draft simply because you are OTC, know your target list, but aren't around the Forums when your turn comes up.

4. Remember, it is just a mock draft - but there are 11 other members who agreed to the above - and they expect the 12 will do their best to get the draft done in the 7-10 day timeframe. It's simply what is fair to the other 11 members - and since you are agreeing to the principles above, you've agreed to respect the timeframes. These timeframes were put in place not to optimize draft results - but to respect the other's time spent for this draft. So, again - if you can't meet the requirements - let someone else do it, and enjoy watching it from the sidelines.

One final note - the above is meant to ensure the Mock Drafts run as smoothly as possible, and also to benefit the community at large. The most successful drafts have used these principles, but more importantly, when community as a whole (the 12 members drafting) have taken the Draft and run with it. In other words - the Draft rules are what help standardize the drafts for the Community at large - but only the Community Draft members can make the Draft succeed. As such, if the 12 members can agree to modifications on timeframes, weekends, etc. - in the end, the group has to make the draft work, so it's more important the group figure this out, and then commit to running it together (the only unchangeables are the 5x5 format (generalizable) and 1 draft at a time (the Forum's not a draft room).

To be clear - the above principles are meant to help the draft group get organized, get started, and to move the draft along, and to resolve any outstanding issues - but other than the basics being preserved (1 draft at a time, 12 teams, 5x5 format, separate threads for picks & discussion) - the GROUP works out the issues, using the framework above to help them make these calls! In other words - for each group - get together, get agreement, and get going! Best of luck!

Quick recap:

1. Post picks in the picks-only thread, all the discussion happens here. Each time you pick, PM the person behind you that they are OTC (on the clock).

2. If you will be gone for extended time leave a queue list with someone who can't snipe you.

3. You get 3 hours on the clock before a pick will be made for you. This is not the expected normal - if we want to get 3-4 rounds done daily, that's the exception, not the rule.

4. Once everyone is signed up we will agree on "live drafting hours".

Ah yes, another Mock draft... one clarification - as long as it's 5x5, the rest of the details - including format - please work it out as a group...ultimately, it's what the group does that will determine its success, so other than the above rules & best practices (those are what have enabled the drafts to run smoothly & effectively) ...get 12 members confirmed, get the group on-board to figure out the details (such as depth of rosters & format), and away you go!

Here's the last sign-up list from Mock II (with PRoSPx) that expressed a wish to participate earlier (but which are all unconfirmed), feel free to edit & update as the final 12 are confirmed......

Is there any room in MDIII? If so I would love to participate as I'm on here quite regularly during the day.

Again, with Mock I/II done, and the details well-known - once you have 12 confirmed, it's up to you 12 to agree on the details, get it going & keep it going (a Mod will pin a Picks-Only thread once you are drafting, but as there are no Mods in this draft so far - the rest, it's up to the group of 12 <and, it has always been run by the group of 12 in past drafts in past years>). Best of luck!

I'm good to go and have reviewed all the rules.

I believe we had agreed during MCII to amend the hours to be from 9am until 9pm (didn't see this in the rules above).

I would like in on this mock if there is room. Could always use some draft practice and some perspective. Also was in Mock Draft I, so I am well aware of rules. Also wouldn't mind too if this went deeper in player pool than usual.

I'll 2nd Supac's desire to have a deeper pool / draft. one of my leagues is a 14 teamer that starts 14 hitters and 10 pitchers with 4 bench spots so we draft 392 players.

Get me in this please. I would love to do a little deeper of a draft. I'd be down for extra rounds. Or maybe even 14 teams if possible?

Also when would we start? I may be fairly busy tomorrow but I am assuming since we aren't even full yet / picked the order / agreed to the settings / etc that it wouldn't be until at least Tuesday.

I would love for Rotoworld to constantly be ripping through mock drafts from now up until the season starts.

I'm in if you've got spots open... would be my first of the year, but would be beneficial as I'm looking for a redraft 5x5 (preferably auction though).

I would be down to do a 14 team draft if everyone confirms in a timely fashion. Otherwise I'd really like to get this started ASAP, just need 2 more confirms to get a 12 team draft going. Then we can agree on the league settings etc.

as much as i would love to do a 14 team draft, I think such lofty goals would be hard to accomplish.

Agreed, and I think it'd be more relevant for the board as a whole to stick to12.

Remember that overriding principle is that the draft be relevant to the community as a whole - it's why the 5x5 format is there - it makes sense to keep it at 12 for the same reason. Details like roto vs. H2H (as both are popular), what format (ESPN, Yahoo, etc.), how deep your benches go, the exact hours, how to handle weekends/off-hours, that's up to the group - once you get your 12 confirmed & in.

To be frank, past drafts have run into so many hiccups with some owners not being quite as committed as the rest of the group, that as a whole it's better to have 12 committed owners than a larger number - which I think is what brock & JFS171 are referring to.

I'm in agreement. Happens to be my busiest day at work this week, and yet I'm still yearning to find time in my day to come make some picks.

Perhaps the 10 of us in here go ahead and lay the ground rules? Then once we grab 2 guys, we can be off and running.

Rosters - how deep, what positions exactly

Platform - would personally prefer Yahoo!'s player universe, but we need to decide

Hours - both for time of day we expect folks to pay attention, and time alloted to make a selection

Hi guys,

I signed up for the first mock that took place, and had to be dropped- I assume my pick was eventually just skipped, but I felt pretty crummy... I was able to sign on at day's end (or the evening the draft started), but it was an abnormal time and I just had no way to let people know... I don't even have an android, so when I'm not at a computer (and as a clerical worker I'm on a computer all day) I can't really get online on the "Go"... never cared to get a 'droid because I'm online so much. But I couldn't even log in to let people know I had to bow out that morning, and stuff got very hectic for the entire month of Jan... well, mostly just the first two weeks... then it settled down.

I received a PM from a very polite member of our forums here, notifying me that there was a 3rd one happening...

I was wondering if I could join? I signed up for my regular league 4 days ago... my standard 5x5 roto league at that... so now would be more ideal for a "mock" for me than back in Jan. would have been anyway. (I am still sorry for wasting anyone's time back then, though!- seriously... I know how hard it is for these to flow seamlessly, and I did not want to be the one to cause the knot in the hose that backs things up, so to speak... and I have much respect for those who organize & help run them, as I have done this stuff on other sites on my own before.

Anyway, I would very much like to join this one, if you're all willing to give me another shot. I try to contribute to the help sections in the MLB and NFL fantasy forums as much as possible, although I have been away for about 2 weeks or so... partially due to NFL being over and not being in an NBA league this year. But I'm ready to prep for MLB and boy am I glad it's almost here! :D

Just please let me know if you guys are personally OK with me joining... I promise that I will not hinder on anyone's time. The last time was a real odd situation... all I can say.. heh.

So if I'm 11 I can start today or whenever too, just an FYI.

I do not know of anyone who could fill #12 unfortunately.... but I will take the 11th pick if that's OK?! :)
