Detroit Lions 2013 Season Outlook

The Lions hinted early that they'd be players in free agency. Overall, I think they made some very smart moves.

Secondary:

CB Chris Houston

S Delmas

S/CB Quin

DE/LB Jones

LB Levy

RB Reggie Bush!

Lots of moves and some pretty big signings here as well. But some notable departures include:

Cliff Avril

KVB

Florence

Backus

Peterman

We have a lot of holes I know, but good work so far in free agency. What is scary is that we are going to be relying on Fox, Reiff, and Raiola to protect our franchise QB Matt Stafford!

I don't think either Fisher or Joeckel fall to us at the 5th pick! We currently don't have a LT nor any depth behind our newbie starters already! Could it be possible we go for Warmack?! Do we get a possible elite pass rusher Ziggy Ansah? Or will Dee Milliner make our young secondary formidable and more talented?!

Truth is we need so very much! There's not many options in the passing game besides Tron, we could use a compliment to our passing game, even tho Bush is a major upgrade tithe offense.

I believe we should get Ansah personally, and I bet they do, but who knows!

Anyone else feel the Lions are making the right moves?

I like the signings for sure. I don't trust their drafting as I feel they have been horrific at drafting for several years. We will see but they seem to find a way to mess the draft up evey year ...Mayhew isn't really much different then Milen to me.

In the article they have the Lions trading back to the Jets probably for their first and 2nd picks and Detroits 1st and 5th picks. I would love if Detroit did that and traded back again to Minnesota for their 2 1st round picks. Draft Teo and Hopkins. Address The tackles in the 2nd with Watson and Fluker or some variation if they are still availiable. Scoop up the Honey Badger in the 3rd. 4th you get the BPA in the 6th they could get a hell of a steal with Lawrence Okoye. Then the 7th take a Punter. This could essentially give them one of the best drafts in years.

Rogers and BMW in the first round and not on the team a few years later as big time picks is something I haven't seen Mayhew replicate. Not saying that the guy has been lights out in the draft, but at least the first round picks have been solid NFL starters. Stafford, Suh, Delmas, Fairley, Pettigrew, and Reiff are all at least playing for the Lions and I'd say all are better than replacement level. Not really sure if Best was worth the gamble to trade up for, but the talent he showed when he wasn't concussed was certainly warranting of where he was taken. Titus Young was a pretty big bust and there are plenty of others, but Millen made me feel like he could really botch a pick from anywhere in the draft. I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd have taken Russell had he not gone over Calvin.

The Lions have gone from one of the most poorly run franchises in all of sports to a decent team. Not exactly an exec of the year type rise in fortunes, but they are also a bit handcuffed in FA because of the massive rookie contracts top picks use to command. I'm not overly optimistic as a Lions fan and I'm not huge on Mayhew, but anyone is an improvement over Matt Millen.

Booooooooo.

I'm 100% prepared to deal with that consolation prize at pick 25.

Some interesting mock drafts.

The first guy has Xavier Rhodes being picked twice.

I just don't see Patterson getting past St. Louis (16, 22) or Pittsburgh (17). They have an urgent need for a play-making WR.

Yeah, everyone has them hot on Tavon Austin.

Haha, looks like a mistake, he meant to put Sheldon Richardson, if you click on his rationale for the pick.

WR wise if they could somehow get Hopkins they will get the WR steal of the draft. This guy has Roddy White written all over him. He may not be the fastest but his catching ability is better then anyone named above.

Ansah in the 1st. A good rush defender with the upside to be a great pass rusher. Don't LOVE it, but definitely a need.

A bigger need is OL (losing 3 starters in an already bad group) and assume they're looking at Watson, Armstead, or Warford with this pick.

Could also go Cyprien, but I think OL is a more pressing need.

I'm hoping a team is hot on one of the QBs and is willing to pay to jump up past the Cardinals & the Jets, since we still have needs at OL, secondary, & WR (!) and have no 4th rounder.

My guess is it'll be Watson.

The #Lions have talked with multiple teams this morning regarding receivers available for possible trade, according to sources.

Josh Gordon is an intriguing trade candidate, but he's one more run in with the law from being banished for the season. I don't think they'll take on that responsibility.

Especially not after Titus.

Hey, does anyone remember that article that mentioned the Lions experimenting with some kind of jumbo or gigantic goal line formation to maximize their use of their DT/DE's?

I think it was something like a 4 or 5 DT front? Might have been from last year, if it wasn't from this past offseason?

That ring a bell for anyone?

Can someone make sense of this beyond Megatron? Broyles, Durham, Edwards and now Ogletree? Who is going to be taking all those passes from pass happy Stafford beside Calvin and Bush. Pettigrew will steal some BUT this team can easily support a solid WR2 but who the heck knows who that is right now with Nate out for most of the season?
