Paul Maholm 2013 Outlook

177 posts in this topic

Steady, and boring throughout.

13-11 4.15 ERA.

His career K rate isn't great either, so I'm not paying for any of that in any league. Pass.

I actually like Paul Maholm a decent amount this year. He had easily the best year of his career last year and is still only 30 years old. He achieved this by developing and incorporating his slider more into his repertoire, especially to righties which has helped even the RH/LH split that has plagued him throughout his career. Throughout his career lefties have posted a wOBA of .275 while righties have pounded him to the tune of .347. Last year they were even at .310

He also posted the highest K% of his career, the lowest BB% and the lowest contact% since 2007. Add in the fact that hes pitching for the Braves with one of the best bullpens, divisions and defenses behind him and I think he is a great sleeper for 15 wins and solid production this year

I have to be honest… I believe I may have seriously underrated Maholm, both as a fan and from a fantasy perspective.

I'm starting to get a strong Doug Fister-like vibe with him. When Fister went to DET, they saw something in his mechanics and tweaked it - and he ends up being a better strikeout pitcher and just a better pitcher overall.

With the Cubs, Maholm was a solid innings eater - high 3s ERA, K/9 around 6 or a tick higher. Then he gets to ATL and posts a mid-3s ERA with a 7.7 K/9.

Did the Braves find something? Kinda looking that way so far… struck out 6 in 5.2 IP his first outing, and has 5 Ks through 5 tonight.

I think he's a spot guy I added him for tonight but is a strong chance I send him back to the wire.

@ WASH

@ PIT

@ DET

v WASH

@ CIN

I'd probably only use him @ PIT so I'll take my chances he's still available for that start if not? I'll find somebody else.

That's what I'm looking to do. I streamed him tonight as well and as tempting as it is to keep him, that's not how the streamer game is played. The WASH start alone - I'll be using that roster spot elsewhere...

How can you drop him right now? What league are you in???

I have him on most of my teams 3 out of 4 and loving it.

It's a 12-teamer. In 12-teams or less he's a stream option. I pitched him today because he's of the quality to dominate a team like MIA with good rate numbers. I'll believe he can deliver consistently against the tougher lineups when I see it.

I disagree , an above average pitcher on a really good team is more then stream option. if healthy he is a shoe in for 14 wins

Who are your other pitchers? I don't believe he should be on the waiver wire in a 12 team league. He plays on a strong offensive team with a great bullpen.

Since he has gone to Atlanta and got comfortable he has been amazing value.

If your going to keep streaming him just know that he most likely wont be there next time!

I play in two 12-teamers. He was dropped tonight by the guy who streamed him. I'm just biding my time in the other one because of slim pickins the next couple days.

He could definitely take a step forward and be consistent all year. However, I'll take [fill in streamer's name here] against good matchups vs what he'll put up going forward against poor matchups. Particularly in league where you have an innings max. He doesn't (or hasn't until now) have the K-Rate imo to hold as a season-long option. That makes his poor outings (and there will be some) impossible to stomach.

The only reason he had such a killer 2nd half last year was his matchups, looks at who the Braves played, soooo soft.

LOL i was not indicating that

just feel he will be a valuable asset and rostered in 12 teamers comfortably

I wouldn't surprise me. Its just not my style. I listed his upcoming schedule in this thread and I'd only have started him once in the next month or so, therefore, he's not really worth the roster spot to me. Especially considering I can find several like pitchers on the waiver wire.

It all depends on the format. I'm in a league with 25 moves max, so streaming is not an option. I did pick him up yesterday for what i hope to be a long term move. 12-15+ wins very possible and if you keep your expectations reasonable, it should work out well. Keep in mind that nobody is expecting him to get a boatload of strikeouts. So pick him up for wins, whip, and what could be a very solid season. I'm thinking kind of like Lohse last year.
