2013 NFL Draft Thread

250 posts in this topic

Well, someone has to start this - other than our own draft days, the best day of the offseason is upon us.

So many questions:

1. How early do the big 3 LT's and 2 OG's go? O-line needs for so many teams - the bubble teams being the Fish (who may trade a 2nd rounder to get Albert to play LT instead), the Bolts (who need a LT desperately, but at worst case need to get one of the 2 best OG's <even though it's a horrible overpay for OG>, or Fluker)...

2. Where does the first QB go? Who is the first QB to go? Do the Bills trade down? Do other teams trade up in late 1st to get a QB, or wait until the 2nd/3rd (since the talents here are nowhere near as high as last year, or likely next year)?

3. Where does Eddie Lacy go? This would be the first year in 30+ drafts no RB goes in the 1st round.

4. How many WR/TE go in the first round? After skyrocketing up the boards, Cordarelle Patterson's lack of route-running chops and supposed low intelligence are now putting him #2-#3 on the boards, while mini-Percy Tavon Austin is rocketing up. Meanwhile, both Eifert and Ertz are being talked about as bigger difference-makers as TE's.

And of course....

5. Can the Jets start to rebuild their miserable franchise with the "right" #9 and #13 picks? D-line pass rush, CB and WR are the value picks there IMO. Anything with a QB in it....well I think the pitchforks and torches would come out of Gang Green's fanbase....

6. Trades - the 49ers have 13 picks, the Pats are always looking to wheel and deal, and while the draft lacks elite skill position talent, it's said to be deeper than almost every recent depth in the level of starters (for example, some scouts believe 8-10 starting safeties can be had from this draft) - look not only for the teams to draft in & out of the 1st half of the 1st round, but into the 2nd/3rd.

7. Fallers/Risers - always a fascinating story.

And of course, we couldn't have a thread without some mock, so here's NFL Network's, courtesy of Mike Mayock.....http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/mock-drafts/mike-mayock/171006

A few comments on Mayock's mock:

-Top 3 LT's in first 4 picks. Could see that, if PHI is not sold on Milliner or Lotulei there, which brings me to...

-Lotulei really falling in this mock, so is Milliner. I think the Milliner injury reports are trying to make him fall to teams who hope to get him.

-I do NOT see the Titans passing on OG if Warmack or Cooper are there, and thus the Bolts might be forced to take Fluker.

-I don't see the Bears taking Teo over O-line help.

-I also think Vaccaro, Elam & Cyprien get drafted - difference-making safeties are a big need in the 2H of this draft's 1st round.

-The biggest mistake in most drafts is drafting for need over BPA when the gap is huge between BPA and best need pick. In that vein, as much as I like Lacy, I think the Pack could get D-help in Round 1 and hope Lacy falls to them in Round 2, or get one of the other RB's at Round 2-3. If that happens, I'd expect that no RB gets drafted in Round 1.

-I don't see the Broncos passing on the excellent DT's available at their slot for a DE, even with losing Dumervil. They can get an aging vet to supplement the pass rush, but interior D-line is their big need, along with secondary additions. I see the Werner pick as a panic reaction to losing Dumervil (who is a great rusher, but sold out to get sacks, they need real D-line help for both run & pass support).

Milliner to the jets is my prediction.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the cowboys make a splash for someone like Patterson either. Jerry loves a crowd puller.

Maybe the falcons trade up to get Mingo or Jarvis jones?

I dont see how Teo is a first rounder...

I do think the Ravens would look at him at #32. But #20, that would be another panic pick IMO in reaction to the 4 top LT's and 2 top OG's being off the board (Bears need O-line help, I realize they got their LT when they signed Bushrod, but O-line depth is always necessary, and I find it hard to believe only 1 guy will transform that line, although moving Webb to RT could in theory upgrade 2 positions, I can't see why not getting O-line help or BPA wouldn't still be the priority over a guy like Teo).

DT isn't a sexy pick so you're probably right. Jerry gonna goof up.

I think BUF is going to trade down. I also don't think CLE will take Smith @#6.

I would love it if the Vikes got Patterson and Wiliiams in the 1st round.

Its not a "sexy" pick but Jerry is trying to recapture the magic, and one of the things thats often overlooked by most fans when it comes to their back to back super bowls in the early 90's is the ridiculous front 4 defensive rotation they had, their 2nd 4 was better than most starting front 4's.

Haley, Jeffcoat, Maryland, Casillas, Lett, Hennings, Tolbert, Jimmie Jones.

One of the things Ive heard (and fans will take it with a grain of salt) is that if coaches want influence on a draft, Jerry will give it to them (that includes assistants - evidently it was Mo Carthon who talked Jerry off Steven Jackson) so if respected voices like Rod Marinelli and Monte Kiffin say "we need help up front" and they grade those guys out and like them, my guess is Jerry will defer.

I think you misunderstood my post.

I agree that the Boys should take a DT unless one of the top guards falls but not likely. The safety Vaccaro also wants to play for Dallas. Who knows. I guess we'll find out tonight.

I dont see how Teo is a first rounder...

Just read the Vikings are interested in trading up to select him before the Bears do at 20.. Clearly NFL teams think he can be an impact three down linebacker.

Ugh please no. MIN seems to be obsessed with Notre Dame players lately.

Wasnt the Vikings GM the only one to attend his pro day?

Hearing something on the grapevine about the Bills locking in on Tavon. Way to waste a great talent.

Will it surprise you? Look at what they did to Spiller?

At least their HC is gone.

Ryan Mallett to the Browns is looking plausible again, and would be very interesting.

His big arm + Josh Gordon = booyaka?

He is an exciting player, so for him to end up in a sinkhole somewhere in upstate NY would be a real shame. I say this from a fantasy point of view. Then again, i'm also hearing that the Jets might be interested, and he did have a visit with Ryan...

Maybe the Jets shock everyone by going Geno and Tavon with their first 2 picks.

That would definitely signal a new direction for the franchise, frankly a welcome one.

Jerry has selected exactly 1 WR in the first round. It's not going to be a WR. OG or DT or trade down is what history tells you.....

Jax is on the clock!!!

A source with knowledge of the team's plans tells Profootballtalk the Chiefs will select Central Michigan LT Eric Fisher with the No. 1 pick.

This report mercifully avoids the semantics of who's been "informed" of what. There will undoubtedly be more conflicting reports between now and when Commissioner Roger Goodell steps to the podium to announce Kansas City's pick, but the evidence that Fisher will go ahead of Texas A&M's Luke Joeckel has become overwhelming.
