Marcell Ozuna 2013 Outlook

253 posts in this topic

"Marlins placed OF Giancarlo Stanton on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain.

Stanton was injured during Monday's extra-innings win over the Mets when he hurt himself while running to first on a groundout. He was able to walk off the field with a little limp, but more won't be known about how long he'll be sidelined until he undergoes an MRI. The Fish have called up Marcell Ozuna, and he figures to play regularly in right field."

Ozuna #75 Prospect

He's batting .302 with 7R, 5HR, 15RBI, 3 2B, 1 3B, 2SB, 1.024OPS in 53AB.

Power is for real. Speed is at least good for 20, maybe 25.

Yep. Lots of swing and miss in his game though.

Anything to see here for keeper/dynasty leaguers?

Absolutely in dynasty leagues (depending on the size). How big are rosters?

Maybe. LoMo is still around. After th AS break they say. But if he hits he can also play 1B.

That would waste his talent considering he has good speed and a cannon for an arm, though.

Vladimir Guerrero is his comp

Kid has been on fire the past 6 games...5 homers and 12 RBI. Lets hope he keeps it up.

Lomo is going to be the firstbaseman. His days of playing LF are over. The spot is open in LF for Ozuna to take over for Pierre if he hits the ball. Listening the Mike Hill (GM) on the radio this morning and he pretty much stated as much when the host asked him if he was going to stick when Stanton comes back.

The next OF prospect to come up is slated to be Christian Yelich to take over in CF. Guys like Pierre, Ruggiano, and Nolasco will most likely all be dealt around the deadline.

You sound like you're pretty in touch with the Marlins, do you have any speculation as to when this might be?

I live in South Florida so I get plenty of info when i listen to sports talk radio in the morning. They interveiw Beinfest and Mike Hill weekly. Yelich is nursing some Plantar Fascititis right now so his callup is not imminent per say but once he is healthy and able to get some good AB's down in double A it would not surprise me to see him up around July. The Marlins were calling it there dream team propect OF before the season of Yelich, Marisnick, and Ozuna but injuries derailed all three of them. Ozuna just recently came back and he has been smashing. Yelich and Marisnisck are nursing injuries but should be playing soon.

Yelich is actually playing now. He's struggling but he's playing.

But Ozuna certainly has a chance to stick around long term. Wouldn't surprise me if he pulls a Cespedes-lite like 20 homers 20 SB line the rest of the way.

Also wouldn't surprise me if he becomes Morse and hits 12 homers the rest of the way with a handful of steals and a boatload of Ks.

could be interesting

I think the power is all but guaranteed. I expect power. That tool is about as elite as you can get. The speed is there and he has a high success right in the minors (83%) so initially I think he will test the league and see if he can steal at the ML level.

That's really what makes this kid interesting is his ability to impact 2 categories. He's not going to bring in a boatload of Runs or hit a ton of RBI but he can hit for pop, steal a bag every couple of weeks, and maybe not destroy your OPS.

That's what I'm expecting.

So how similar is Ozuna to Chris Carter in terms of power and contact ability? Because with the exception of speed, it sounds like he profiles a lot like Carter except Ozuna is much younger and therefore has a higher ceiling long-term.

Thanks for the info. Why do you think the Marlins didn't care whatsoever about Super-2 or even the first deadline for Jose Fernandez? Why wouldn't that same lack of concern apply to Yelich? In other words, why would they wait on Yelich (aside from the injury of course) when they have shown a disregard for saving money and delaying service time with Fernandez?

Wouldn't surprise me if he put up sub 30 runs, and sub 30 RBI's in that pathetic thing they call a lineup the rest of the season. With Giancarlo out, I would not touch any Marlin with a 40 foot pole unless I was maybe in a deep, deep NL only league. Death to counting stats. The corpse of Placido Polanco and Joe MaWHOney are going to be the 3-4 hitters for christ sake!

The Fish stacked their 40-man roster with a ton of pitchers. Take a look at it. 23 pitchers vs 17 position players is quite the breakdown. Subtract the 4 catchers and you have 13 IF/OF to play with. With Jensen hurt, Ozuna is the only other healthy guy on the 40 man that can play OF. Yelich isn't.

No doubt if Yelich was on he would be up instead.

Jose Fernandez is strictly for that Cuban community.
