Ray Rice 2013 Season Outlook

1,229 posts in this topic

We all know that Ray Rice is extremely talented, but the primary reason I drafted him in the first round in 2011 in my primary league was because the Ravens went and acquired master FB Vonta Leach to lead-block for him.

It unfortunately seems like Vonta Leach will be going elsewhere. If that's the case, it's not so much that I'll be downgrading Ray Rice, he's still a solid first rounder in PPR. However, you definitely have to wonder which RB's move ahead of him in the first round of drafts due to that development.

Ray Rice or Marshawn Lynch?

Ray Rice or Alfred Morris?

Ray Rice or dare I say it, Chris Johnson?

To me, Vonta Leach was a huge part of that offense's ability to relentlessly grind out yards on the ground game, and made Ray Rice's TD-potential huge the season following the departure of career TD-vulture Willis McGahee. Leach is a rhinoceros, a tank.

Heck, I think I'm more interested to find out which team signs Leach, and draft THAT RB.

(I added Chris Johnson to the above rough list simply because I have a feeling that he'll get the annual hype-train going by the time real drafts happen, similar to Ryan Mathews last season)

This is the first thing that popped into my head when I heard this news.

Rice seemed to hold his own after Cam was gone and Leach was phased out though. It probably won't affect Rice's draft position for me much in a ppr league but I may move him down a peg in standard, possibly behind McCoy or Alf.

The real reason we should shy away from Rice is Bernard Pierce. At the end of the season it seemed like (at least to me) it was becoming a RBBC.

I said this in a different thread, but the Ravens aren't paying Ray Rice $8+ million this season to sit on the sideline. Bernard Pierce is insurance / injury depth as long as Ray Rice is healthy. Just because Pierce is actually pretty good doesn't mean he's going to see a ton of touches - he's simply the change of pace as long as Ray Rice is healthy.

Nevermind, just saw they signed Greg Jones. Pretty underrated move for Arian Foster imo, he's a beast.

Not helpful. I don't even know what those numbers are supposed to represent.

I would draft Pierce in round 1 if he was a starting RB, I think he is that good. He's a better pure runner than Ray Rice, just my opinion.

Obviously Rice is a complete football player, and I would still be happy to have him on my team. More so in PPR.

Ray Rice was very effective after Leach was being phased out last season.

I do think Rice's numbers may dip a little due to offensive scheme and Pierce not because of Leach leaving.

most expensive decoy in the league. They will use Pierce even more this season because they want a healthy and effective Rice in the playoffs.

Not even a great 2nd rounder IMO, although I'm sure he'll still go top-5 overall. Bust of the year

Assuming they'll even make the playoffs....

I don't know anyone who has Rice in their top 5RB, then again (until now) I don't know anyone who has him outside their top 10RB.

They may not win the Super Bowl, but the Ravens are better headed into this year than last.

I'm not seeing the problems with Ray Rice.

I get that Bernard Pierce is there, but it seems very overblown to me. Similar to how over the past two years various people have said that Tate is a better runner and what not than Foster. Obviously Tate's presence hasn't harmed Foster's fantasy value at all. In fact I think Foster's value is better, since there's such a strong handcuff.

Other than resting Rice their last game, Pierce was not really stealing touches from him. Rice already got 30 touches, 150 yards, and a TD in week 16, so I'm not concerned that Pierce then saw a lot of action in week 16 too. I know Pierce is good, but I'm not convinced he's Ray Rice good, so I see him more as a strong handcuff instead of somebody possibly forcing Rice into a committee. Rice averaged 23 touches per game in the post season. Given that that is more touches per game than he averaged in 2011, when he set career highs in both rushing attempts and receptions, I'm not seeing any problems. Pierce got 108 carries last year, but Ricky Williams got 108 carries in 2011.

I think Rice is a top 5ish RB again, and certainly top 10. He's a model of consistency both in terms of performance and durability. I'm just not seeing the warning signs other people seem to be so concerned about. You never know and it is a bit of a guessing game, but it seems there's a bit of an anti-hype train going on and I would caution people not to outsmart themselves with regards to Ray Rice.

He's got a talented RB backup

That backup is a better "pure runner"

HE LOST VONTA LEACH!!!

I swear I've seen this before.

2 of the 3 games bernard pierce had 10+ touches were blowouts. the 3rd was a meaningless game that featured tyrod taylor as the leading passer.

and rice doubled his touches in the playoffs, when it mattered most.

how the ravens losing leach/boldin and a good chunk of the defense makes them better is beyond me.

Arthur Brown and Michael Huff, and Rolando Mcclain on the reserve/retired list = Better team than last year?

Oh, they get back Demetrius Webb from injury too!!

Agreed - Pierce is a great natural runner. Fast, quick, speedy, shifty. When he gets his chance to shine, he is going to be very good.
