Marcel Reece 2013 Season Outlook

87 posts in this topic

There seems to be recognition from the new staff in Oakland that Reece is a pretty dynamic player who they need to get involved in the offense more. What does this bode for his fantasy value this year?

When given the opportunity to succeed last year he proved himself capable of strong production.

Does his talent on a team starved of offensive dynamics combined with assured production in the event of a McFadden injury make him an intriguing late round flier? Or is it a wasted lottery ticket considering he is still just a fullback who gets moved around a lot?

I could see a situation where he gets used in a similar way to Lance Kendricks last year, especially with the Raiders questions at the tight end position. Moved around from fullback to lining up at tight end, maybe even a few carries.

I wouldn't completely discount Rashad Jennings from the mix. If DMC misses times, Jennings should be heavily involved in the offense.

I know everyone is down on him after last season and with good cause. His production when he had an opportunity to step up in that Jags offense was terrible. But in the two seasons he played before that, he averaged 5.4 YPC on 123 attempts. He also caught 42 passes over that span, in his limited activity.

His ceiling is pretty limited, even if DMC goes down for the count, and Reese will factor into the game plan regardless, but DMC and Reese aren't the only names to know in this backfield. Jennings has shown the ability to be a productive back. I believe that he has the potential to bounce back from his miserable 2012, even though that would be more likely if he were in a stronger offense.

Bottom line, I guess, is that Reese won't have a complete monopoly on carries in the case of a DMC injury. In fact, it's feasible that he could take a back seat to Jennings, despite the 2012 performances of both players. Without a DMC injury, neither player will be fantasy relevant but Reese would have more value as he is a more versatile weapon.

Depending on when the DMC injury occurs, there's a chance Latavius Murray might know the offense well enough to make an impact.

I think Latavius Murrey will need to be injured or ineffective for Reece to be the next guy in line after McFadden.

Two months later and it's happened. Latavius Murray to injured reserve today.

I think this improves Reece's season outlook tremendously. He already was going to be on the field for a lot of third downs. Now, all we need is to wait for the annual DMC injury. Reece is a much better player than Jennings, who flat out flopped in his opportunity to show some feature back skills last year. Reece had 75 targets last year, third most amongst RBs. I think he's a sneaky PPR RB4 at the end of your bench.

Reece is the must own handcuff to DMC, IMO. He's a bruiser with speed and hands who has shown he can catch and run. If DMC goes down, and he will, you want this guy on the end of your bench.

Even though the coaching staff has indicated that Reece will be used primarily in a blocking role due to the injuries and ineptitude of the offensive line?

No, since the offensive line is terrible, they'll just send him out to catch passes so there's 1 less blocker to stop the onslaught of blitzs that undoubtedly will ensue because Pryor is as inaccurate as Tebow... *mind blown*

I was high on this guy several weeks ago based on past PPR performances from last year. But I think the Raiders are going to be a fantasy wasteland. Sure, Pryor may have a few surprisingly good fantasy games. But the Raiders as a whole are going to be terrible. Garbage time or not, I don't care. I think Reece might have actually benefitted more with noodle armed Flynn as the QB and getting those checkdowns. Pryor? He'll be so scared for his life that he'll just take off like the cops are chasing him.

Rotowire says that it appears that he is likely to work primarily as a fullback this season. 10 yards on one carry and one catch in the preseason. Does't look like he'll be involved as the third down back based on his preseason usage.

That's the nail in the coffin. Sayonara.

And to think I traded Danny Woodhead for this guy...in my misguided belief that the Raiders would recognize he's a better back than Jennings.

Reece was in on the first play but was underthrown. Good sign though.

Good sign for who? Nobody actually owns this guy do they?

LOL. I do in two leagues, at least for tonight in case DMC goes down.

They just gave Reece a BIG money deal for a fullback.

He would be very involved if McFadden went down.

They talked this week about getting him more involved and he had a very good 3 game run last year as a starter.

If dmc does go down, will Reece take over at the RB? Jennings is listed the number 2 rb on the raiders depth chart.

I think it would be Reece mainly due to the big money they just gave him and Jennings is on a small one year deal. Could certainly be Jennings, but Reece has excelled before as DMC's backup.

Reece is awesome. He would be #1 if McFadden pulled a, well, McFadden (missed 4 games last year and 7 in 2011).

I owned Reece last year and picked him up and stashed him on my bench this year and always wondered why this guy wasn't more involved in the offense. He looks really good when he runs the ball and catches the ball. I expect him to be a worthy flex play (12 team leagues) once McFadden goes down with an injury . Not hoping he gets hurt, but it's pretty likely.
