Jonathan Villar 2013 Outlook

Dude was called up a few days ago and has been batting lead-off for the Astros. He has been compared to Jimmy Rollins given the switch-hitting, decent power and aggressiveness on the base paths. To quote Eric Karabell:

"...it wouldn’t be shocking if this was a top-10 shortstop for the rest of 2013."

He's probably already gone in AL-only and deep leagues, but has anyone else already made the pickup in more shallow formats?

Plus speed and situational awareness, so he'll steal bags. It doesn't look like he's your typical speed guy who can't steal first. He Ks too much but he's got good contact skills, so a .260 average with 15-20 SBs by the end of the season is his likely upside. He's got a little pop too, so 5-10 HRs isn't unreasonable.

Middle infield is pretty thin this year with a lot of barely rosterable guys being carried for the small contributions they might make. He should be better than most of them, but he's a young prospect so it's equally likely that he'll be utterly useless.

Prefer him to Junior Lake and he comes with SS eligibility in Y! Taking a shot in a few leagues where I am weak at SS and/or need speed. I'm a sucker for speed from the MI slot.

Not really. Villar is a toolsy SS with decent walk rates and only middling contact skills. He will strike out much more than Altuve and not hit for that kind of average. He does however possess much more power than Altuve and probably more speed too. Scouts think he could be a .260 average guy with 15-20 HR power and 30-35 SB speed, which is where the Jimmy Rollins comps come into play.

Ah ok. Thanks for that. I grabbed him in a keeper. Hopefully the stros offense can improve next year

For rest of season, how does he compare to Jed Lowrie, Jedd Gyorko, or Anthony Rendon?

I would easily roll with any one of those guys over Villar... Unless you need steals and your other option is Rendon.

Villar hit the ground running, but with his contact rate and lack of power he will see his share of struggles this year.

Thanks. Need pretty much everything. Thought he might have more upside potential.

Would you take him over A. Escobar? He's been a disappointment this year....salary difference would be negligible for me with $7 for Escobar and $10 to acquire Villar.

I have the same issue that you do. I just picked up Villar and am starting him over Escobar next week. At least Villar will give me a consistent source of steals, while Escobar hasn't done much of anything in months.

Made the same move, so yes.

With Segura getting plunked today I grabbed this dude as some insurance...maybe he will stick this year and provide some stats!

with escobar batting low in the lineup he doesn't offer much upside. At least Villar has some potential. He's approaching top12 SS status and is probably already there. ie: better than a MI

Yeah, I dropped Escobar and picked up Villar this morning....tired of Escobar being consistently average!!! Even on the pathetic Astos, Villar's ceiling seems to be exponentially higher than Escobars!!!

This isn't the place to share your latest team updates or ask/answer Bench Coach (team-specific) questions. A lot of you know better, so it would be highly appreciated if you didn't encourage such posting by propagating the discussion. All posts in question have been hidden.
