Zack Thornton - RP NYM

Recommended Posts

26 year old RP in the minors, the Mets just acquired him in the Ike davis trade. 2013 minor league stats, 2.63 era in 75 inning pitched with 90 So's and just 13 walks. Pretty impressive, shows ++ control with SO ability. Def. A call up is coming soon, can't wait to see how this plays out.

He was unprotected in Rule 5 draft and no one picked him up which means no one in the offseason thought he was worthy of an MLB roster spot. I think he has potential to be an average reliever that can get righties out, but he doesn't look like someone that can be a set up guy or closer. He has extreme splits because he throws from 3/4 angle.

But who knows, there have been plenty of rule 5 guys that go onto being productive players.

Given who the Mets have in their bullpen, he can most definitely be their closer.

Is there some reason (other than he is in the Mets system) he isn't getting a call? Their bullpen blows. They just got rid of Farnsworth. In AAA this year he has a 2.31 ERA in 11.2 IP 11 H 3 ER 3BB 11K's. He just turned 26. What gives?
