Vidal Nuno 2014 Outlook

29 posts in this topic

Vidal Nuno held the upstart Rays offense scoreless over five innings in Sunday's extra-inning victory.

Advice: The Rays had scored 27 runs over the first two games of the series, but the lefty found the antidote on Sunday. Nuno allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out six on the day. With Ivan Nova hitting the disabled list with an elbow injury, Nuno is the most likely candidate to replace him in the rotation. His next start will likely come Saturday against the Angels.

His minor league numbers looking good: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=nuno--001vid

Anything to see here? He could stick in the Yankees rotation for ROS. Doesn't seem to throw hard, but he had a 2.25ERA and 1.10WHIP in 20IP last year for what it's worth.

I grabbed him in one of my leagues. Its a weekly so I don't have the luxury of streaming. I'll run him out and hope for the best.

Worth a shot now that he's in the NL?

my wire was quite thin and he was one of the options with potential(maybe), so I grabbed him in hopes that the move to the NL is beneficial. guess we'll see tonight! hopefully so.

Ya I took him as well. I'm expecting moderate success his first go-through the league. For fantasy purposes I now like him more than McCarthy (even though I think it was a good trade for the Yankees in real life)

I grabbed him in my Dynasty league, who knows if the move to the NL will help though. He gets to pitch in SF and SD so that's a plus.

Has anyone actually watched him pitch enough to say if he has any real talent or if he's just a guy?

He's certainly "just a guy." He throws 89, his 2-seamer is awful and his slider is a meatball you cringe watching. However, he has good command of his change and curve and is therefore able to mow through lefties fairly easily. He has good command overall and doesn't hurt himself but all-in-all his stuff is as mediocre as it gets.

If anything his repertoire is actually BELOW average. He's the definition of a soft-tossing lefty, yet those guys usually have limited success their first time in the NL if they can control their stuff, which Nuno can.

The only appeal is the move to the NL. He doesn't even have a good GB rate. He's far from a savior or even a long-term addition to your staff but ideally he can spring together a few decent outings if you need innings until something better pops up in deep leagues or a DL player of yours returns (*Cough Cliff Lee *Cough)

Keeper?

jk.. but I'm pleased. And again, I expect him to have some success until teams start seeing him for the 2nd time.

Anyone like Nuno on Friday at home vs San Diego? I don't think Nuno is anything spectacular despite some recent success, but the Padres are 2nd-to-last in baseball in runs off LHP . Pads also rank dead last with a .215 BAA vs LHP.

Anyone using him tomorrow?

Was planning to but doesn't look like I need him anymore. I think he's a great start if you're looking for a QS though

I'm glad I avoided it, as tempting as it was on paper. 8 hits and 6 ER in 5 IP vs the Padres is awful, especially for a LHP.

I lucked out as well. I'm pretty good at drafting SP or picking up long-term pitchers but man am I terrible at spot-starting. Trying never to stream again. Terrible pitcher = terrible results regardless of opponent
