Danny Woodhead 2014 Season Outlook

49 posts in this topic

I didn't see a thread for this guy yet, so I guess I'll make one. He's coming off a year with 1000 yards from scrimmage, 76 receptions and 8 TDs. The guy was PPR gold last year and just signed a two year extension with SD. Do you all think he can repeat? There was plenty of love to go around between him and Mathews, but when Mathews was out is was bad for everyone as Woodhead couldn't really carry the load himself. Donald Brown was signed and I don't think he is a threat to either Woodhead or Mathews and will primarily be in a relief/backup role.

Where is everyone looking to take Woodhead? I'm trying to figure out where I could get him.

It was tough watching him get so close in short yardage situations last year. He is tough as nails. I believe there is still a lot of life left in him.

Little put off by the signing of brown.

Have not paid attention to him much.....not really strong for or against

I think Brown was just signed as insurance for Mathews, who is obviously fragile, coming off a 285 carry season. I read Brown will be returning kicks and I would guess will get 4-6 touches per game just to lessen the wear and tear on Mathews. Woodhead will still be a really solid play in PPR as he's one of the best 3rd down backs in the league and gives Rivers a quick outlet behind a fairly shaky o-line.

Brown's indeed a Matthews insurance policy - and because he's signed for both 2015 & 2016 in non-guaranteed money, IMO he's also their fallback plan if Matthews walks in free agency.

What this means - Woodhead's role is pretty safe for 2015. I think if Brown becomes the lead guy in SD, that this does dampen Woodhead's ceiling down the road as Brown's versatility in the pass game would impact Woodhead, but ironically enough, as long as Matthews is the guy, they'd go with the same 1-2 punch as last year, and Brown does mostly ST and change-of-pace work this year. Woodhead is a PPR asset, but I think the chances of 3-down work are slim to none as long as Brown is around.

I have a soft-spot for the guy after drafting him for $1 in my 0.5ppr auction league last year. He carried my RB2 behind Charles after Martin crapped the bed then got hurt. I'm going to try and get him again this year, but his value is obviously much higher now, especially in any kind of ppr league. I think his role remains unchanged regardless of Mathews or Brown being the starter.

With Brown being signed what does everyone think of Matthews? I like him a lot, but I'm always afraid of paying higher prices for guys previous years instead of drafting for the upcoming.

I dont think Brown is a threat to Woodheads production. Woodhead has carved out his own place in the offense and I could see his role expanding.

They LOVE woodhead. So your a fool if you think otherwise

He surprises everyone. Short guys are great athletes too now!!! Haha

But SD is deep at RB but Woodhead will get production. No doubt

So what's up with this guy? In PPR, he was RB2 most of the time last year.

He still good to own? Or are there too many mouths to feed?

I think he's still good to go. If Brown eats into anyone's carries I think it's gonna be Mathews. Woodhead plays a Vereen role, so he won't necessarily lose that work to Brown. They like what he does in SD, I don't think they will limit his usage, especially after signing that new deal. Also, after watching preseason games, they still love using this kid at the goaline. Always an added bonus for PPR leaguers.

For a guy that finished 1034/76/8 last year he sure doesnt get much love. Thats low end WR 2 stats atleast. Im not worried about Donald Brown at all, my concern is with a harder schedule this year. Woodhead does start the first 2 games of the year against the Cardinals and Seahawks, then it gets easier.

I was able to get him very late in my two PPR drafts and was ecstatic both times. He's incredibly underrated in PPR and his usage is consistent as well. Steal.

Got him as a RB4/5 in my standard league instead of a "top-tier" rookie RB ala T West or J Hill. As long as he gets his targets and redzone looks I think I'm ok with it..

Got him in rd 9, PPR league. I feel good about it. Guy is tough as nails. Reminds me a lot of Vince Papale.

Woodhead IS Shane Vereen.

Yet Vereen is going in Round 4, and you can get Woodhead suuuuper late. Mindblowing.

Prediction time. The Cardinals make a statement tonight and remind everyone they have a great defense. Good luck out there Danny...

Triple timeshare now. Brown was on the field a lot in situations where it was all Woodhead last year.

Not usable while they're all healthy.

Yeah basically zero points, that was pretty sad for Woodhead owners.

Like five yards total. He was getting shut down on and behind the line all day, with limited carries.

Heres a newsflash, Arizona has a great defense. So there was no reason in the world to expect anything from Woodhead. Next week Seattle is gonna kick San Diego around like a red headed step child too. Be on the look out for Woodhead on the waiver wire week 3. Ill pick him up wherever I can.

Any reason to hold onto him in non-PPR or already time to move on to someone with a higher ceiling?
