The Axe Elf BattleVote Questions

So the Axe Elf Christmas fund was filled with more IOUs than the American SS Fund?

I was confident you would pop up around here again.

While injuries did play a large role in some of your picks, guys like Allen Robinson and B. Marshall (two of your favorites) really let you down.  You also had a lot of Fleener.

Anyway, thanks for introducing me to Draft Masters.  It was a fun format and I ended up getting paid in the André Roussimoff Memorial League we played in.

Yeah, I think that's what I said.  But you can expect that ANYTHING Axe Elf does is likely to be the most superlative of its kind in fantasy football history.

"I took third place in one of my Yahoo Pro leagues for a grand total return of $20.  Yep, $20.  That's it.  And now here I am to give half of it away to the winner of the Axe Elf BattleVote questions in the form of an Amazon gift certificate."

Eye find your humility admirable.

And the eyedea for the contest, AND your thorough follow-up, and honest follow-up, most respectable. Makes up for all the berating we experienced at your hand. Left out one thing from your post: DeVante Parker. Stills, thanks for the advice on Stafford and Gore, two of my most-bargainest solutions of 2016. Eye salute you.

Actually this is the one you are looking for. @mrblonde1984

As long as I got at least 7 out of 12 correct I'm happy. That's what Axe got after an "extensive research." Though I guess if I checked court records I could have found out Josh Brown was gonna channel his inner Bobby Brown...

Well I DID cash in ONE damn league, as I said.

But the injuries were indefatigable.

Injuries prevented Allen Robinson from reaching your 1500/16 prediction?

Injuries prevented Golden Tate from being a WR1?

Injuries made Kelvin Benjamin useless most of the season?

Sure.

i'll give him credit for returning to pay the winner here. seems like he has some humility too. i don't buy his excuse though cause it's the same story from previous years. with any luck he might have learned the value of variance with so many leagues and to stop over relying on aging veterans. somehow i doubt it with his own ego being his worst enemy.

There is no value in variance.  The best investment strategy is a highly UNdiversified portfolio--when you are right.  And I'm Axe Elf, so that's not usually an issue.

I'll take 3rd place considering all the people who participated. While some of your opinions are kinda out there this was very fun and more importantly you actually posted the results and kept your word which is very strange in today's internet culture, hopefully this comes back in some form for the next season.

You axually tied for 2nd, but ties are listed alphabetically so you appear 3rd on the list.

I appreciate all of the advice you gave last year @Axe Elf, by doing the opposite of almost everything you said I was able to win my most competitive league.

The Legend of Axe Elf returns. Its a pleasure to be in the same forum with you sir. But I hear you really suck at fantasy football. Is that true?

I originally posted this back in May, but since I've not yet heard from @Maxcd99 I came to check if he posted in the thread--and found that the first and most important half of my May 8 post has been deleted!  It's probly because I mentioned...

Oh never mind.

ANYWAY, here are the FULL RESULTS:

Q1:  Kelvin Benjamin (134.1) vs Doug Baldwin (159.6) (Standard)

Q2:  Allen Robinson (199.3) vs DeAndre Hopkins (197.4) (PPR)

Q3:  Ezekiel Elliott (293.4) vs Lamar Miller (160.1) (Standard)

Q4:  Jamaal Charles (13.4) vs Devonta Freeman (284.1) (PPR)

Q5:  Jamaal Charles (13.4) vs David Johnson (407.8) (PPR)

Q6:  Donte Moncrief (102.6) vs Michael Floyd (115.8) (PPR)

Q7:  Sterling Shepard (184.4) vs Corey Coleman (93.3) (PPR)

Q8:  Coby Fleener (137.3) vs Delanie Walker (188.1) (PPR)

Q9:  Eli Manning (224.1) vs Philip Rivers (259.0)

Q10:  Zach Ertz (105.6) vs Antonio Gates (94.8) (Standard)

Q11:  Doug Martin (71.5) vs Mark Ingram (196.2) (Standard)

Q12:  Matthew Stafford (279.7) vs Kirk Cousins (300.7)

Q13:  Amari Cooper (230.9) vs Brandin Cooks (246.3) (PPR)

Q14:  Demaryius Thomas (226.3) vs Golden Tate (223.1) (PPR)

Q15:  Matt Jones (67.3) vs Jonathan Stewart (138.4) (Standard)

Q16:  Austin Seferian-Jenkins (34.4) vs Dwayne Allen (113.6) (Standard)

Q17:  Ryan Tannehill (190.4) vs Ben Roethlisberger (252.3)

Q18:  Arian Foster (19.3) vs Jay Ajayi (215.3) (PPR)

Q19:  Dion Lewis (54.7) vs Danny Woodhead (27.1) (PPR)

Q20:  Jameis Winston (256.5) vs Marcus Mariota (260.7)

Q21:  Laquon Treadwell (2.5) vs Michael Thomas (255.7) (PPR)

Q22:  Ladarius Green (36.4) vs Julius Thomas (52.1) (Standard)

Q23:  Randall Cobb (148.3) vs Jarvis Landry (231.5) (PPR)

Q24:  Ameer Abdullah (26.8) vs Jeremy Langford (73.2) (PPR)

Q25:  Julio Jones (176.9) vs Odell Beckham, Jr. (195.6) (Standard)

Best Battles:

Q25:  Julio Jones (21) vs Odell Beckham, Jr. (19) (Standard)

This one lived up to the hype, with both players finishing solidly among the top 10 WRs.  Even though Jones edged OBJ by 2 points in the vote, he lost the contest by 18.7 fantasy points--still a very narrow margin.

Q12:  Matthew Stafford (17) vs Kirk Cousins (10)

I take particular pride in predicting both of these as top 10 QBs in 2016 when the rest of the fantasy world was turning a deaf ear.  In the end, QB5 Cousins pulled the 7-vote upset by outscoring QB7 Stafford by just 21 fantasy points.

Q10:  Zach Ertz (13) vs Antonio Gates (17) (Standard)

While both TEs battled through some injury problems, both still finished among the top 10 at their position, with Ertz scoring the mild upset by 0.2 PPG (and 10.8 total points) more than Gates.

Q13:  Amari Cooper (17) vs Brandin Cooks (23) (PPR)

Cooks was the right call here, with 6 more votes and 15.4 more fantasy points than Cooper--but both were still top 15 WRs in a fairly close battle of fantasy studs.

Q20:  Jameis Winston (22) vs Marcus Mariota (13)

Although neither of these contestants ended up as a fantasy starter, this battle of second-year QBs was decided by a razor-thin 4.2 fantasy points--in favor of the 9-vote underdog.

Q14:  Demaryius Thomas (20) vs Golden Tate (16) (PPR)

Neither of these players set the fantasy world on fire either--and in fact, both likely disappointed their fantasy owners to some extent--but with Thomas winning by fewer fantasy points (3.2) than votes (4), it was definitely a legit matchup.

Q9:  Eli Manning (20) vs Philip Rivers (17)

The vote was closer than the result, but Rivers voters were vindicated when he upset the underperforming Manning by some 35 points.

Worst Defeats:

Q21:  Laquon Treadwell (12) vs Michael Thomas (18) (PPR)

This vote was ultimately correct--albeit embarrassingly close--as Thomas ended up as a top 10 WR while Treadwell caught one pass for 15 yards all year.

Q16:  Austin Seferian-Jenkins (12) vs Dwayne Allen (18) (Standard)

The voters got this one (somewhat narrowly) right as well, as Allen may have underperformed, but ASJ completely flamed out and was sent to the Jets as punishment.

Q11:  Doug Martin (22) vs Mark Ingram (14) (Standard)

Speaking of underperforming Buccaneers, Ingram was 38.2% better than Martin on a PPG basis, even when both were healthy--yet Ingram received 36.4% fewer votes.

Q7:  Sterling Shepard (16) vs Corey Coleman (18) (PPR)

Yes, Coleman suffered from a severe QB deficiency for most of the season, but despite winning a close vote count by 2, he only scored about half as many fantasy points as Shepard.

Best Group Decisions:

Q17:  Ryan Tannehill (3 votes) vs Ben Roethlisberger (26 votes)

With a vote differential of 23 votes, this group decision was tied for the biggest landslide among all the BattleVote questions--and Roethlisberger did indeed destroy a regressing Tannehill by some 62 fantasy points (though he did play in one more game than Tanny).

Q5:  Jamaal Charles (13 votes) vs David Johnson (32 votes) (PPR)

This competition was marred by Charles' injury, but the large 19-vote margin would have likely been correct even if Charles had played in every game.  Johnson beasted, and bested all other NFL RBs by more than 80 PPR points.

Q8:  Coby Fleener (15 votes) vs Delanie Walker (24 votes) (PPR)

Q23:  Randall Cobb (20 votes) vs Jarvis Landry (29 votes) (PPR)

Each of these matchups were decided by 9 votes--and each was correct by a sizable margin in the NFL as well.

Worst Group Decisions:

Q4:  Jamaal Charles (31) vs Devonta Freeman (8) (PPR)

Like the Tannehill v Roethlisberger vote, this one was decided by a whopping 23 votes--and even though it was also marred by Charles' injury, I think it's safe to say that Freeman had a better year than most of the Charles voters imagined.  He likely still would have won, even over a healthy Charles.

Q18:  Arian Foster (27) vs Jay Ajayi (5) (PPR)

The third-most decisive vote (a 22 vote margin) shows that fantasy players are more likely to trust an aging star than an emerging talent.  This time it didn't work out that way, with the "backup" Ajayi posting almost 200 more fantasy points than the "starter" Foster.

Q3:  Ezekiel Elliott (17) vs Lamar Miller (31) (Standard)

This 14-vote margin was closer than the Foster v Ajayi vote, but it illustrates the same principle of past production over future potential--and a lot of wishful thinking about Miller moving to Houston.  The rookie was more than 130 fantasy points better than the vet.

Q1:  Kelvin Benjamin (32) vs Doug Baldwin (16) (Standard)

This was a fairly legit matchup, as Baldwin only beat Benjamin by 25.5 points--but there were 16 more Benjamin voters than Baldwin voters.

Biggest Anticlimaxes:

Q19:  Dion Lewis (16) vs Danny Woodhead (19) (PPR)

Lewis ended up scoring almost twice as many points as Woodhead merely because he ended up playing in 5 more games than Woodhead, although on a PPG basis, Woodhead nearly doubled Lewis' production.  In the end, neither player was much of a fantasy factor, and the promise of the exciting 3-vote margin between them fizzled out with injuries.

Q22:  Ladarius Green (10) vs Julius Thomas (17) (Standard)

Likewise, Thomas won this BattleVote by playing more games (9) than Green (6), even though Green had more points per game when he played (6.1 to 5.8).  Still, neither one were among the top 15 TEs even by that criteria.

Q6:  Donte Moncrief (25) vs Michael Floyd (21) (PPR)

It was a close vote and a close finish--Moncrief had 4 more votes but Floyd had 13.2 more points--but so what?  Both of them likely spent much of the year on the fantasy waiver wire.

Q24:  Ameer Abdullah (10) vs Jeremy Langford (20) (PPR)

Between injuries and ineffectiveness, both of these guys were largely irrelevant fantasy players in 2016.

Q15:  Matt Jones (21) vs Jonathan Stewart (16) (Standard)

These two had kind of a close battle going on--at least on a PPG basis--with Stewart averaging just 1 fantasy point more than Jones.  Then Jones got hurt in Week 7, and was a mysterious healthy scratch for the rest of the season, while Stewart's 10.6 PPG didn't even place among the top 20 RBs.

Q2:  Allen Robinson (29) vs DeAndre Hopkins (24) (PPR)

The excitement of Robinson beating Hopkins by a skinny 1.9 PPR margin (the closest result of all the contests) was kind of lost in the disappointment that neither of them were among the top 20 WRs in the league.

And this completes the 2016 Axe Elf BattleVote questions.

I have to thank @Axe Elf for running this last year. It was fun looking over my picks to see what my thoughts were before last season (lol at me picking Jamaal Charles over David Johnson). I think I speak for most when saying it would well worth it for this or something like this to be set up next season (even without a prize) as its a thought provoking and worthwhile exercise.
