Marcin Gortat 2016-2017 Season Outlook

103 posts in this topic

This guy was going for $20 last week in Yahoo drafts and now is only going for sub $9.

I look at his Yahoo projected stats for the year and nothing is too special about it.

What do you think of this guy for 2016-2017?

IIRC most of his best stretches last season were when Beal was out and before Markieff moved in. The Wizards have a new coach and system but you can probably do better picking up someone like Dieng or JV at the range he's going at.

Just my 2c

You could honestly get him at a discount this season with all the Myles Turners and Jokics and whatnot.

Reminds me of Rob Lopez.. consistent, you know what you're getting. Safe pick and he doesn't really hurt you much if you've taken, or plan to, higher risk/rewards

You recall incorrectly , stats were similar if not better after Markief arrived.

My mistake, you're right: he was consistent throughout, even when Kieff arrived. (Although he really beasted during December when Beal went down for awhile)

I think he will be pretty good again, I've always chased him because he always gets well underrated in drafts. However, I do expect him to take a little hit as he has competition for the first time in years. And there is the slight possibility that he fades hard in the second half as Mahimi could steal minutes to the point of even stealing his job. Mahimi runs the floor well and is a good defender. Makes him a bit more risky this year, but he'll probably be ok

Gortat didn't have much competition, but he still didn't get much playing time in the Q4 because Wittman is a moron. This should change with a new coach. IMO Gortat is clearly better than Mahinmi and should produce very similar stats as last year.

The guys is getting on and I don't see it as that clear a difference between the two. Mahinmi is probably the better defender already and he came on a bit towards the end of the year and the playoffs. He is much more mobile too. I'm not saying Gortat is a write-off by any stretch, but I don't think he will be as valuable as in the past and he is ranked higher too in Yahoo and ESPN

Yahoo put him at 71 this year so I was lucky to take him in my 7th round this year and my pick was 75... I think top 50 should be no problem for him.

His stat did not go down at all in the past seasons and we are looking at him getting more opportunities in a new system. Mahimi doesn't post a threat to him from what I see.

It's not always about "being better". JV is better than Biyombo but JV still lost some minutes to him last season. Mahinmi is a better pick and roll defender and rim protector than Gortat. In some matchups, that might be needed more than what Gortat brings, which will affect his minutes negatively.

so mahinmi coming back soon...

predictions on how this will affect gortat's PT and stats?

(I was offered Gortat for my Tobias Harris and am still mulling that over but you don't have to comment on that since it's in the wrong forum, although it might be useful to people as a gauge of gortat's value...:))

Gortat's usage is at 13.9 which is his lowest since being Dwight's back up in Orlando. Gortat is pretty much a rebounds, FG%, and blocks specialist now.

That's 3 cats without hurting too much in others...doesn't sound bad to me.

Yeah not complaining. He is who he is. Pretty safe fantasy player.

He is what he is. decent source of reb and fg. not much else to get excited about.

He's a fg% anchor though - usually 55% fg+. He's also above average for a big at the line around 70%, so unlike most of the big men that give you nightly double doubles, he doesn't punt your ft%.

He has also been much better than decent in rebounds - he is currently 2nd in the league in rebs at 12.4 per game.

He doesn't have massive upside, but he is as consistent as they come in fantasy. I try to own Gortat every season if I can, his price is always good and he always beats his adp.

And he does all this with very few turnovers. I agree with this 100% and am the same. I always go after him where he sits in his draft positioning and am rarely disappointed.

One of my favorite players fantasy-wise. He'll always give you what you expect, a rock solid performance with double-diggit points and rebounds,  excellent fg and an occasional early christmas present in the shape of 5 blocks
