Jonathan Villar 2018 Outlook

It's a double switch. He was one of the last outs the inning prior, so it's a way to avoid the pitcher spot coming up. So some of it is timing. It's also the fact they like to take him out late in games for defensive purposes. In a close game and depending on how the line-up falls, this may happen a bunch.

Exactly I have been a Villar owner going back to his Astros days, defense was never his strong suit

Bounce back season seems unlikely when being bench every 2/3 games.

He's played 13 out of 14 games.

Coming off bench doesn't count.

I moved on, wanted it to happen but had to make a change as he was my starting 2B and I just couldn't stomach to continue to see him come out for Sogard and Perez. If you have the space to hang on he's not a bad stash IMO and/or spot starter.

42ab, league lead at 60. Not really so bad. Not a part time player.

Sell, sell, sell, if you can get anything for him in a deeper league. His profile looks atrocious.

What are people doing with him? I grabbed him off the wire for help in steals but not sure if I should hold on to him or not. He’s hitting for a decent average and has a handful is steals and is still above 60% owned upon Yahoo.

Actually been pretty decent. Idk how you hold when he is batting towards the bottom of the order though. 3 runs scored!

Gotta just hope he keeps hitting, he’s riding a 400+ babip right now though and can’t get an xbh for his life.  Sadly he’s my starting 2b right now...hoping scooter clears waivers so I can scoop

him up instead.  If Villar gets pushed up the order he should be just fine though

I don't see any way this will happen barring multiple injuries.  Cain-Yelich-Braun-Shaw-Santana are locked into the 1-5 spots.  Even journeyman catcher Manny Pina is hitting ahead of him.  Not to mention all the days off he gets when Sogard takes his spot.

I fell for him last year and fell for him again this year (at least there was little risk at his ADP).  Fact is, he's merely a steals specialist in deep, daily leagues.  3 runs, 1 HR, and he's slugging .318 in 85 at-bats.  Yikes.

Grabbed him for Coors week, but benched 3 straight days. Guess I’m going back to the dumpster for a 2B sigh

Am I the only idiot with this guy still on his roster?  Still hoping something shakes out, but I'm going to have another dead spot with Osuna.

drop him - i did it two weeks ago.  Never felt better.  Now he's clogging up someone else's roster on their bench.  Good riddance. If Denard Span is available , he's similar to Villar with more RBI production!

I don't really understand why he's being benched though. For Hernan Perez who obviously is never going to be a regular day starter? Villar is hitting .270 with 6 steals. I don't see what he's doing so badly. I don't get it....

His defense is atrocious and he makes a ton of air headed plays. He's lucked into a couple extra hits to be at .270 but you'd never believe it if you've been watching their games. I was one of his biggest supporters last year and this year too, but I think I'm off the boat. The speed and power is still there but it isn't going to come back out with the Brewers I'm afraid. They seem to have moved past him as an everyday player and he's not really the type of hitter that can excel playing every third day or so. He needs volume to get on base and create damage which he isn't being afforded. I dropped.

Since this thread was last active, he has put together a handful of multi-hit games and has now started 7 games in a row. Is anyone changing their tune on him at all?

Personally I feel there could be something there still, and he has the tools to contribute in quite a few categories. He isn't an old man yet, either.

Im riding the Villar train right now and Im very excited to see how long he can keep this consecutive games started streak alive. Any particular reason he has been starting other than the fact that he's been playing well?

I know they’ve had a fair amount of injuries. The only guy standing in his way is hernan Perez

Yeah, the day I was about to drop him Braun was a late scratch and Villar was inserted and went 3/4.  He's been more or less hitting since.  Sometimes overpatience pays off.

I'm not saying anyone should drop Villar that currently owns him, you might as well ride the high while you can, but I was about to pick him back up and looked at his peripherals, and man do they look horrible:

BABIP: .414 (was .373 during his great 2016 season)

BB%:  5.6% (was 11.6% in 2016)

K%:  31% (was 25.6% in 2016)

GB%:  64.3% (was 55.6% in 2016)

FB%:  13.1% (was 24.1% in 2016)

Soft%:  29% (was 20.5% in 2016)

O-Swing%:  28.6% (was 24.1% in 2016)

Basically every metric screams regression, and every metric is not only much worse than it was in his breakout 2016 season, they're also worse than in his turd of a 2017 season.  Of his 38 hits this year, he has 8 infield singles and 3 more bunt hits.  He strikes out a lot, swings out of the zone a lot, hits a ton of grounders, doesn't make hard contact, rarely walks . . . basically he has every bad hitting trait out there, other than the fact that he is fast and he's out-running defenders more often than most.  That's only going to get him so far though.  I predict he'll end up at best a .240 hitter like he was last year, if he doesn't clean up his game.

Like I said he's fine to ride while he's hot, and SB don't grow on trees, so as long as he's getting PT and stealing bases he has some fantasy value.  But just be weary that the bottom is going to fall out sooner or later.

I realize he's not the Villar that won many teams' leagues a few years ago anymore and his peripherals are screaming regression, but is there a reason why Counsell refuses to play this guy?  Guys like Saladino, Orf and Perez playing over Villar?   They finally pulled the plug on Sogard, but he was getting PT also for awhile.  Figuring out if Counsell is doing this to light a fire under Villar, or if he just can't stand him.  Any Brewers fans have some insight on this one?

Pretty sure his defense is a huge part of it
