Starling Marte 2018 Outlook

So it seems like he's going to be hitting 6th for the foreseeable future.  Very odd.  Is this a new trend where you hit your best SB threat sixth (see Trea Turner)?

There is a DH. Wait until the DH is gone and he'll probably be hitting 3rd

Seems dumb to me to move a hitter you would normally hit 3rd to 6th because of the DH.  I wouldn't put it past managers to do something like that these days though.

Hitting 3rd today

Good call from your post yesterday. Sounds like he will stick in this spot unless its interleague.

It's early but he is rocking at 6:6 BB:K ratio. Walking at an increased clip (13%) Also striking out less than usual with 13% (usually around 20ish). His O-swing is way down and his Z-swing is way up. Swing % overall down 5.

It seems Pittsburgh may be doing something philosophically with taking a different approach with ABs and laying off breaking stuff outside of the zone way more, because the same thing is going on with Polanco.

This also makes me want to dive into this on other Pirates hitters.

Definitely something to monitor going forward.

If Marte maintains his current peripheral profile he is going to have a career year.

Improved approach, more line drives, less grounders, hard hit % up, soft hit % down, pulling the ball more.

Will have to wait and see.  If it's an oblique he's going to the DL.  Hopefully just a precaution and happy they got him out before he made it worse with another AB.

Just to update, per Adam Berry (Pirates beat writer) "Not a whole lot postgame on the injury front. Cervelli said he'll be fine. Didn't see Marte. Hurdle: “We’ll know more tomorrow, maybe.”

Really hoping this is not an oblique and a DL stint. Likely have to run some tests before we know more.

Was off to a great start too. Hope Cervelli is right, Hurdle with a queer comment as surely they'll definately know more tommorow.

A speed guy who doesn't typically get injured, so really hope this is a short-term thing at worst. Loads of players getting hurt right now.

this from rotoworld..

Quote

Starling Marte (side) is out of the Pirates' starting lineup on Wednesday against the White Sox.

Marte left Tuesday night's game after experiencing discomfort in his right side and it sounds like this could be an extended absence. Sean Rodriguez is starting in center field and batting seventh Wednesday versus White Sox left-hander Hector Santiago.

is there any talk on why this write up seems to be thinking "extended absence?" just speculation and assuming it's something with oblique? or is that a safe assumption?

It's just speculation

Credit to Lance Lysowski - DKPittsburghsports.com:  The Pirates have yet to determine the severity of Starling Marte's injury, and there is concern over a possible oblique injury, Todd Tomczyk, the team's director of sports medicine, told reporters before first pitch Wednesday afternoon.

My take: *Concern is that it is an oblique.  If so, DL stint coming.*

He's only played more than 135 games once in his career so this isn't surprising.  I was waiting for the inevitable DL stint I just hope it's the minimum 10 days.  Don't be surprised if he hits the DL again at some point in the year.

From Adam Berry, Pirates beat writer before game today:  Asked how he felt, Marte said, "Feel good." He also had the right side of his lower back wrapped, so.

Great. HE doesn't think it's necessary.  This obviously will end well.

So a dl stint is inevitable sometime in the near future?

Well, this isn't the Mets, so I suspect the Pirates will err on the side of caution.  Since Marte seems to not be overly concerned, hopefully just the minimum.  I'd rather they put him on the DL and get him healthy then have him take a swing a few days from now, aggravate it, and be gone 4-6 weeks.
