OBP vs Average for a noob?

Recommended Posts

After 2 years our commissioner is going to OBP

I have played fantasy only a few years, I know what OBP is but I am having trouble finding comparable rankings lists so I can see who gets a bump, who gets downgraded

Guys who walk a lot with good plate discipline get a bump (Votto, Carlos Santana, etc.).

Do you have a chart of big losers....big winners in OBP from last year so I can compare?

This.

Other than obviously looking at OBP, look for guys that walk a lot, BB% is a great indicator of OBP because walk and strikeout rates of hitters are less volatile than batting average.

Indeed.

What could be helpful then is to put those bb% in a spreadsheet or something to see what an average bb% is, then you can who is above average, and would have more value in an OBP league, and so on.

League average walk rate in 2017 was 8.7%.

That might save him some time.

That seems really high.

Not say it isn't true, just seems higher than I would have guessed.

Use the auction calculator on Fangraphs and change BA to OBP. Even if you're not in an auction league, it will give you an idea of which players move up/down in the rankings when compared to BA.

Also as soon as your commish changes the setting in your league -- and he has to before any draft -- you will be able to see OBP appear instead of Avg.  You can then check back as far as the platform goes at that point.  On Yahoo you can see 2017 and 2016 OBP for all batters for example on their Players List.  You open that list then you can click on the OBP column and the players will automatically re-rank themselves by OBP ratings only.
