Middle Relievers 2018 Outlook

Recommended Posts

Good call earlier on Lou Trivino. Pitching  in high-leverage multi inning situations for the Athletics, he has  7 W which leads all middle relievers, plus 3 SV on the year. 4 and 2 in the past month. 10 K/9 1.34 ERA 0.97 WHIP.  Relying on a MR for Ws is dumb I suppose but the Athletics don't exactly have a ton of innings eaters at SP and have played a lot of tight games this year. Combine that with the fact that he seems to be next in line for saves on Trienan's off days, he could remain a source of cheap W/SV with some mild ratio and K help in deeper leagues.

Yes, big props to  whoever was touting him early in this thread, I thank you.   Big help especially with Ottavino breaking bad of late, it was nice to plug in what seems to be an elite MR option.

You can give me the credit if you want. I was asking about him here over a month ago. Someone LOLd at me over his control I think. Wish I had picked him up then, hes been great.

My initial interest was as a handcuff for Blake in case he got dealt at the deadline. CSB, I know.

Will Smith (SF) has been very good lately, as well.

Smith is also SP eligible, for those that look for such things.

Keep an eye on AJ Cole. Been pitching 1-2 innings since being moved to the bullpen with the Yankees with lots of K's. This year's Chad Green?

Thoughts on Corbin Burnes? He's a top prospect expected to be pitching out the pen for Milwaukee the rest of the season. Earned a save in his first oppo. Do any Milwaukee fans know the deal with him and whether he'll be put in high leverage sitations consistently?

Another strong outing (2IP, 4K, 0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP) against PIT during their 2-1 Game 1 loss on Saturday. I think this kid could really be something in Holds leagues in the second half, especially in Knebel falters.

Keep an eye on Ray Black for SF.  Had a rough first outing (in a pretty meaningless appearance as they were up big against STL), but has since had 6 Ks, 0 BB, 0 H in 2.2 innings.  They made a point to get him up after they had roster openings when Jackson/Gearrin were traded.

They definitely like him because I believe they won't put him on the table for Machado.

Soo now that Britton has arrived in NY, who do we speculate will conjure up the most HOLDS?  There's so many options I'm not sure if any of them are worth owning.

@Backdoor Slider any input on this topic?

Caleb Ferguson has been lighting it up lately & he's got SP, RP eligibility. He ussually always goes 2+ innings with solid K numbers. He might not be Colin McHugh but he's not too shabby either.

Any other solid prospects pitching out of the bullpen who could be serious help in the 2nd half? I'll keep an eye on Corbin Burnes too. 😎

I have said it before and I will say it again.  Not super flashy, but I like Ray Black.  Gave up a three run homer in his first game (0.1 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 ER - Giants were up big anyway) after being called up.  Since then:  8.1 IP, 11:3 K:BB, 0 H, 0 ER.  Again, not going a lot of innings at any particular time.  But could be some ratio help.

Twins keep giving Hildenberger high leverage innings. He has been really bad over the past month or two. 7 runs and 10 hits in 4.2 IP so far in Aug. 3 straight outings with homers allowed. This comes after a 5.40 ERA July. You gotta figure someone else takes over the 8th now. Hope it's Taylor Rogers...

Fortunately I punted him before the game yesterday.

Just a friendly reminder that Pat Neshek is back.  He's thrown 12.1 innings since mid July and has been lights out, allowing 1 ER, with 1 BB to 9 K.  The strikeouts have been excellent in past years and may come with a bit more work, but he's logged 2 SVs and 3 HLDs in this span.  That means he's seeing a lot of high leverage situations and converting well.  I see him as a must-add in HLDs league or SV+HLDs leagues.

What are people in holds leagues doing with Trivino? He’s been great but it seems like he's been bumped way down in the pecking order since the rest of the relievers have arrived in Oakland.

Am wondering the same. Struggling with whether to hold or let go with Rodney and Familia in the mix.

I dropped him. He hasn't been stellar lately and the last couple outings have all been .1 innings. He just doesn't have the track record or job security for me to wait this kind of stretch out.

Of course, right after I punted Rodney is traded and Hildy is the closer...  typical smurf.

He said he was tipping pitches. He's logged b2b scoreless saves now, so maybe he's right.
