Hudson Potts 3B - SD

Recommended Posts

Hudson Potts has pretty much moved into must own territory in most dynasty formats IMO.

He has made DRAMATIC progress this year.

Last year at low A ball he slashed .253/.293/.438 as an 18 year old which doesn't look impressive on the surface. However, he features massive power. He was only player outside of Tatis and Stanton to ever hit 20 at that level.

He also went on a tear to finish the second half last year which was probably a sign of things to come this year.

This year in advanced A (A+) as a 19 year old he is slashing .354/.400/.600 which is great, but the most interesting thing is how much his hit tool has progressed to go along with his power.

In 2017 Potts K'd in 26.8% of his ABs and had a contact rate of 71%.

In 2018 Potts is K-ing in 12.9% of his ABs and making contact at a 86% rate at a more advanced level.

Agree on Potts; I think he'll be a top 100 prospect in 2019 rankings.

Officially on the watch list for next year's draft.

Potts is really young for high A (turns 20 on October 28th) and has been really good (276/349/868) with 48 extra base hits including 16 homers.  The strikeouts has picked up since the originals post but has already walked 31 in 2018 after only 23 walks in 2017.

Potts is good enough defensively to stick at 3B.  Potts should be a consensus top 100 prospect in 2019.

I think that is reasonable probably after the super 2 deadline around June 1st.

Bumping up this guy as he's on a tear right now - since July 13th (admittedly an arbitrary start date), he's had a hit in every game, is batting 0.436 with 4 HRs, 5 BBs and 12 Ks (for a 20% k-rate, below his ~25% season rate).  Fangraphs page here.

Overall he's batting 0.288 / 0.355 / 0.519 / 0.874 with 17 HRs across 415 PAs as a 19 year old in High-A.  His walk rate (8%) and k-rate (24.6%) are both materially improved over his 2017 #s.  I've also read in a few different analyst chats that his defense has improved to the point where - while he will never be a gold-glover - he's likely to be able to stick at 3B.  He's likely going to stay in High-A for all of 2018 and begin in AA in 2019.  If he finishes with these same rate stats and his HRs continue at the same pace through the end of the season, he's likely to be in some Top 100s or at least very close.  Either way he's fairly hyped as a helium guy and is making good across a large sample size, so for those in deeper leagues it's worth getting in early.

Probably the most underrated prospect in the game. I mean, he was a 1st rounder and now he's 19 in AA? Isn't that like the best case scenario for a prospect?
