Steven Wright 2018 Outlook

Recommended Posts

Oh and if that wasn't enough reason to pitch Wright, guess who is getting a day of rest?  Their only elite hitter.  Most batters want no part of a knuckleball so I'm sure Manny is happy to sit and maybe pinch hit in the late innings.

I just saw that. I was wondering if I should stream him and like you said earlier, if you aren't doing it against the O's then who would you do it against. Feeling more confident in my decision to pick him up.

Extremely pleased.  Having owned him in 2013 he excels in warm weather.  Hopefully that knuckler dances the nights away all summer long.

Oh and don't go sliding into the bases hoss

There was some hard hit balls in the first two innings. If it wasn't for Dever's sliding grab and throw to first, it would've been a run scored. Otherwise, he cruised right along thereafter.

Also some good catches in the OF.  Especially Bogey's.

Meant to say "having owned in 2016" ^ above.  Was confusing with Buchholz.

I'm hanging onto him in 10 team dynasty.  I think he's going to stay in the rotation.

Yeah for me he really falls into the category of "wait and see".  I'm going to keep holding him and throwing him out there until he gives me a reason not to.  He's a 33 year old knuckleballer with very little track record to go off.  He was amazing for a long stretch in 2016, then kind of fell off later in the season, but his overall numbers on the season were quite good.  Obviously 2017 was a lost year, and now he seems to be back in a groove with a shot at staying in the rotation.

Good answer.  This is the problem with every single knuckleball pitcher that ever was.  When it doesn't dance it just goes flat and becomes batting practice offereings.

When Wakefield was pitching and Franconia was still the manager, Tito said he would go nuts trying to figure out inning by inning if the knuckler was on or off or maybe coming back the next inning.  There is no easy way to tell.  Not for a game.  But from one inning to another.  A knuckleball pitcher can be crap then be excellent then be crap inning to inning.  That was Wright's pattern in that game.  Crap early on, then some good innings, then total crap again.

They’re hard to own because matchups are meaningless. Dominance or implosion depends entirely on whether that pitch is there or not on a given night, and there’s no way to predict it.

Wright goes on the DL.   Thank you again, John Farell, for using him as a pinch runner last year and screwing him up big time.  Grrrr.

Quote

Red Sox placed RHP Steven Wright on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to June 23, with left knee inflammation.

It's the same knee that has given him issues in the past. Wright was rocked for 10 runs last time out against the Mariners, boosting his ERA from 1.23 to 3.38, but he has still pitched really well overall this year. Wright was due to start Thursday and it's unclear what direction the Red Sox will go.

Red Sox recalled RHP Justin Haley from Triple-A Pawtucket.

He'll replace the injured Steven Wright (knee) on the active roster. Haley has made one appearance with the Red Sox this season and owns a 3.06 ERA over 12 starts in Triple-A.

Have no idea about this guy or if he will start in Wright's place or Hector Velaquez or someone totally different.  I believe Wright's start is Thursday but there was a day off on Monday so maybe they will just go with a 4 man rotation this time around or use a bullpen day like TB does.

Eventually they may go back to Pomeranz even though he has been a dogdoo pile this year with diminished velo and stuff.  So hopefully not.

For the record, Brian Johnson is taking Wright's place at least for tomorrow vs the Angels.  Velaquez will probably back him up because he most likely won't pitch more than 5 innings max if that.  No new word of Wright yet.

As for Pomeranz, he is just throwing off the mound for the first time and probably wouldn't be ready to come back until mid-July at the earliest.  I doubt then because he was outstanding last year and something is definitely wrong with him this year.

Anyway if it is a minor issue with him, Wright should be back before Pomeranz either way.

He's set to come off the DL this weekend. Brian Johnson has just been meh. I assume Wright is just going to eat inning out the bullpen for now but may be worth monitoring in deep leagues in case something opens up.
