Clay Buchholz 2018 Outlook

Recommended Posts

Arizona is starting him tomorrow against the Mets.

Lousy arm against a terrible offense, who wins?

I can never remember how to spell this guy's name. Kinda like the vegetable broccoli.

I'm thinking of rolling the dice on Buchholz +175, FWIW (not much in fantasy I suppose). I figure the Dbacks could go at least 10-17 vs Thor with this clown starting.

I used to love this guy back in 06. I was so sure he was going to become a 2.50 ERA 250K level Ace.

He’s had a role as Theon Greyjoy in game

if thrones the past few years.  Now that the series is almost over he can pitch again.

First inning in the books. Fastball sitting around 89, got it up to 91. Very excellent change up, curve ball was erratic, but he did look OK as he located his fastball and change pretty well. His arm is a shell of its former self, but I wouldn't be shocked if he turned in a 5-6 inning solid performance today, the dude does understand how to pitch.

When the two are good, I take the arm. When they are bad, I take the bats.

5 innings. 2 hits. 1 ER. 1 walk. 2 strikeouts. 5.55 FIP.

I love “FIP” from one start.

It's a decidedly flawed stat when looking at multiple starts. One start is laughable, but it's also an easy way to convey the ugly peripherals. .071 babip. 58.8 LOB. 6.9% swinging strike rate. He might be decent this year, but there's nothing in this start that should make deep leaguers be interested.

Got his first win last night posting a line of, 7 IP and 9 Ks against the marlins

Here is the most recent rotoworld blurb;

Clay Buchholz picked up his first win since the 2016 season after allowing one run in seven innings Friday against the Marlins.

Advice: No one was at all interested in Buchholz on anything more than a minor league deal after elbow surgery, but he's showing he has something left with his 1.50 ERA through three starts for Arizona. He doesn't project to have any mixed-league value going forward, but he could remain decent enough to stick in the Diamondbacks rotation for the long haul.

Anything to see on this guy? He's had a solid start to the season.

I actually spent FAAB money on him this week.

This is what 2018 Fantasy Baseball has come to

I thought I read somewhere that he had a new cutter, but for the life of me can't find it anywhere now. Was I imagining that?

Aha thanks! Knew I saw it somewhere.

So the cutter is not actually a new pitch. He's just executing it better than he has in the past, and it has a bit more vertical movement. Encouraging, but by no means a permanent improvement.

He's still Clay 2H's Buchholz afterall.

Got him only for the decent streams this coming week (vs. PIT, NYM).  Miller may not take his spot but Ray likely will.

I took a shot for his two start week. Interesting piece on Fangraphs on his new cutter

FWIW Miller's getting his butt kicked so far in his rehab start today - 5 ER in the 1st inning so far.  Koch will probably be the first one booted from the rotation so Buchholz's stay might last a little longer than we think.
