July Closer Thread 2018

Recommended Posts

It looks like it’s gonna be another busy month for closers moving at the trade deadline. Also, which setup men are gonna move into closer roles and excel? Exciting month as we start the second half of the season.

I'm keeping my eye on Jimenez in Detroit and stashing Osuna in advance of August.

Dyson in the 7th. Was he still in the closer mix? In any case, doesn't look like he is anymore.

Fresh Prince is the closer now.

Viz back tomorrow. Dropping Minter yet?

I think you gotta wait and see if Viz shoulder holds up.

Hell  no!  When it comes to pitchers I don’t trust shoulders and I don’t trust elbows.  Just sayin.

Don’t understand why Watson doesn’t get the nod over Smith.

I'm thinking because he's a lefty.

I think I’ve added and dropped over 10 different Giants relievers over the last 2 weeks and still don’t know who the reliever to own is. I guess I’m picking Melancon back up until tomorrow.

Wow!  What league do you play in that Melancon isn’t rostered?

Will Smith warming up for the Giants now.  I think they brought in Melancon because he hasn't pitched in a few days and it was a non save situation.  Melancon has already given up 2 baserunners and there is a run given up as I'm typing this.  Looks like Will Smith is the new closer from this usage.

I thought Melancon was warming when the score was 8-5, ie, save situation?

So what really transpired here was this:

1. Melancon warming for save

2. Giants tack on a run, make it a non-save situation

3. Melancon comes in for the 9th anyway, with a four-run lead

4. Melancon proceeds to screw up the non-save-situation

5. Smith comes in for save

LOL

100% correct.  It's too bad because he (Melancon) got two quick outs.  Though Belt made a great snag for the first out.

every year the giants bullpen is a guessing game, this year it's even more confusing, that Strickland injury really messed a lot of us up, including wasting moves. then some beat reporter weighs in rw blurbs say one thing, reality says another, just a mess

Will Smith will be the guy going forward.  He has gotten the last 2 saves and they traded a top 100 prospect for him 2 years ago.  His ratios are awesome this year.  Ill bet its his job to lose now

I'm glad I picked Smith up, he's been pitching great and the SP/RP is huge. Be interesting to see what happens when Hunter is back. I'd assume he'd go back to the role unless Smith is just too darn good from now until then. I'll enjoy what Smith can give until then however.

They paid Melancon 60 million dollars and made him the highest (or one of the highest?) paid closers in baseball.  And he wasn’t meant to get the save today, but Melancon basically forced their hand after he imploded with two outs in the 9th.  Melancon was warming up for the save opp at 8-5 and still went in with the extra run.  So yeah Smith got a second straight save, but it wasn’t in the original script.  Though I do agree that I’d rather see him in there than Melancon - they gave up that prospect to use Smith as bullpen help.  They spent lots and lots of money for Melancon to close games.
