The starting NL shortstop says hello.

Joey Votto. Abreu.

But yeah...it’s a pretty good year. If you look at some of the snubs it looks bad. Bentendi.Snell. Muncy. Segura. Paxton Rosario.

I was thinking of just the fan vote.  And they didn't vote Votto in.

And I guess you'd argue Moreland over Abreu?  I mean, ok.  Abreu is on the team anyway as the Sox rep, so we're really talking about who should start there.

Probably a stupid question, but what happens if, say, Machado is dealt this week to an NL team?  Does his replacement have to be an Oriole?

Whoops.  Forgot Albies isn't starting ... which he should.  Then there is no excuse left at all for them having Posey on the team.

And yeah too funny if Machado ends up on the Dodgers or Brewers say.

I think someone mentioned the players have to get their votes in pretty early.  Just heard the deadline is June 10th. That's ridiculous and could explain some of the snubs.

We all know the best players/stats don't always make the all star team. It's a popularity contest, and random at times. Pretty flukey process overall, @89Topps made a good point too.

If it's all about stats, why even vote? Just tally stats on a set date (e.g. 6/30 deadline) and the top statistical performers make it no matter how boring/unpopular the player.

Otherwise we just have to roll with it and take some of it with a grain of salt and let it be.

To make myself clear, I have absolutely no problem with any of the starters. The fans picked those guys because thats who they (we?) want to see. That's fine.

The reserves are a complete joke. As Chris Archer pointed out, the players just dgaf. They aren't taking it seriously and the majority of them just voted for the popular guys. Wouldn't surprise me at all if many of them vote mostly for their buddies. And the players that MLB picks aren't helping things.

And requiring 1 player per team is idiotic. Some teams clearly do not have a deserving all star.

They really think its going to hurt ratings if some crap team doesn't have a representative? What hurts ratings is the allstar game continuing to be a complete joke that nobody cares about - not even the players.

There are plenty of much better ways to choose all stars, but MLB is incompetent and they continue to fail at making the most simple and common sense changes.

I'd like to see someone arrange what that team would look like.

I fondly remember the days when everyone tried to vote in every Royal.

What’s wrong Royal fans?  25-62 not good enough for you?

No one really cares about this game, at least I haven't met anyone who does, but when a game that is supposed to reward supposed excellence gives a slot to Salvador Perez, whose OPS is creeping toward the .500s, and rejects Blake Snell, who is having a Cy Young-caliber season, then that makes it even more of a joke.

Gotta point fingers at the league for enforcing that “each team HAVE to have an all star to represent” rule.

Not bad overall but LOL at not having Judge as a starter.

He's 5th in the majors in WAR, 4th in wRC+, 7th in OPS, 2nd in HR etc..

He's better than Benintendi in HR, OBP, SLG, wOBA+, wRC+ - basically all the stats that players have control over.

Not saying Benintendi shouldn't be on the team because he should, but Judge has very clearly been better and fully deserves to start.

I was going to question Olson as your 1B starter, but then I looked at the leader boards and... holy crap have AL first baseman been terrible!

Agree! Was a rough draft and I didn’t really consider Beni over Judge. Just misplaced on the lineup.

And yes AL 1B has been a little bleak so far.

Well at least Posey is out due to health stuff so we escape that embarrassment and they won't have 3 catchers on the NL team.  Replacement might be the runner-up to the best of 5 man vote do you think or do they have to announce right away?

Not in this era, the era of tanking...I mean..accumulating prospects for the future.

Funny, isn't it, how all the crappy teams are sending a token catcher or token reliever. They have no good position players!

whit merrifield or mike mouse could be the royals representatives

Nick castellanos from the tigers

I never knew catchers weren't position players.  Guess they are just sitting at home plate sipping their ice tea and texting their friends.

I'm fine with all the teams represented.  They expanded the rosters to make up for this very thing.  If they have to expand the rosters again, so be it.

I think the problem is the people chosen sometimes like Nick Castallanos should go for the Tigers, not Joe Jimenez.   It's just that the AL is packed full of really good outfielders this season while poor at1B.  Meanwhile the NL is weak in the outfield but 1B is way stronger so someone like Jesus Anguilar doesn't make the cut but some less than stellar outfielders are included.

For KC yeah Merrifield instead of Sal Perez though who the hell the second AL catcher would be if based on this year alone is hard to say.  So I don't have too much problem with Perez on the team because of his over all career and because he is still a really good defensive catcher and because all the other AL catchers are pretty poor including Gary Sanchez so far this season plus he is injured.  Thank goodness for Wilson Ramos for the AL.

First replacement named:

Quote

Jed Lowrie has been named to the American League All-Star team.

He'll replace Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres, who is on the disabled list with a hip strain. It's a deserved nod for Lowrie, who has batted .288/.358/.504 with 16 home runs, 62 RBI, and 40 runs scored in 89 games this season for a surprising Oakland team.

Good to see this move.  Lowrie finally gets his moment in the sun.

Makes you wonder if the fans should just vote on the entire team.  I mean, honestly, you could argue they actually did a better job choosing the starters than the players did choosing the reserves.  If the fans are to the point where they're savvy enough, and take the time to research the players, while the players just fill out a ballot in their 1 minute of spare time, then heck, just let the fans do the whole thing.

The early deadline for player vote submissions makes no sense to me.  It is just more of a reason or excuse for lack of serious attention they should give to the process.

The "every team gets a rep" rule is clearly an impediment to fielding the best teams and needs to also go.  Every team doesn't deserve a participation ribbon.  This is a zero sum game of baseball, not socialism.
