Draft Strategy

Recommended Posts

Hi,

This is my second year in to fantasy basketball. I wanted this forums advice on draft strategy and rankings. What resources do you guys use?

I have the first pick in a 14 team h2h league. I was thinking about going number 1 with Harden and then Drummond. Which combo would you go with and why?

Thanks,

J

i've always found that just taking the best overall player with ur best 2 or 3 picks is the way to go and not to pick any player that tanks you a category.

if you pick harden at 1, maybe you could follow your next 2 picks with otto porter and tobias harris.  2 guys that have very low turnovers. this would then mean you're not tanking turnovers. Then your 2 picks after that you could do a slight reach on some bigs to get some blocks and rebs.

Right now I'm using the projections from fb-ninja and hashtagbasketball, they are both for free.

BBM has the ultimate fantasy basketball tools, but most of its content is available only under an expensive subscription. You can still register for free and use their team analyzer, it's pretty good to have an idea of what your team will be like during drafting. It uses the stats from the 2017-2018 season instead of the projections for 2018-2019, but it can still be useful especially for the first 5-6 rounds, where you can find many guys that are very likely to replicate their numbers from the past season.

Is it 8 or 9 CAT?

Pairing a guy like Harden with Drummond is a bad idea - Drummond is a high volume poor FT shooter, Harden is the opposite - you’re just throwing one of Hardens best assets in the bin.

Personally, and especially in 9-CAT, I’d go AD if I had pick one, and at pick 28/29 you could target guys like Beal, CJ McCollum, Booker, Gobert (or Mitchell or Kemba if they somehow fall to you).

BTW - this thread needs to be moved to assistant coach forum.

About Drummond as 2nd round pick, it's actually not that bad, it just negates Harden's FT% entirely so you'll have to draft other good FT shooters lately if you want to be above average in that cat. I normally wouldn't do it, but Drummond at 28 is a steal imho so if he's still available why not?

If Drummond is not available consider picking Love and Gasol/Middleton at 28-29, they're a great fit with Harden for a punt FG% team, especially Love.

Anyway like the poster above me said, I'd rather go AD and eventually punt assists

Firstly, thank you all for responses.

This is a 9 CAT league with To's.  So based on your Suggestions, if I go with Harden - go with a punt FG build and pick love next or go with AD and then punt Assists - go with shooters.

Which combos do you guys plan to go with? Are there any websites with stock/sample drafts for each type of builds?

Thanks again for your time!

Only category I've punted is TOs and it has always worked out quite well. Almost every year, I find mid round big men to be extremely underrated. If you get Harden and then a nice big men you aren't suffering too much. I don't agree with punting assists if you take Harden. You're flat out killing one of his strengths.

I would surround him with a few good big men and then you can go for guys like Dragic, Ball, Reddick, and etc. Punting assists or rebounds with Harden seems like a waste.

I meant punt FG for Harden and Punt Assists for AD

I think Harden and then Drummond is a poor move. I'm more of a big the best available with those first few picks, and then start looking at what holes you have to fill in the later rounds.

That's fine. My best suggestion is don't go into the draft with that mindset. Two years ago I took Harden first and I was set on punting FG. Then Gobert was there at 40 and Miles Turner later on. Turned out the only weakness that happened was TOs and FTs ended up being mediocre. Was the easiest championship i've ever won. In part because both of the big men above were 2nd rounders next year.

I would take Harden first and go from there. I know it isn't the best advice but research players. Again, I like big men in mid rounds because they always seem underrated.

I don't like that move either. John Wall is ranked fairly low and Harden + Wall is an awesome move.

Just because I was asked for advice (first time ever, thank you. I feel honoured :D).

Having 1st pick overall means you don't have to punt anything and   I generally do not  punt if I have 1st pick.

That being said, AD is first pick imo.

2nd and 3rd picks   are  another good quality bigs that do not force you to punt. Drummond, Capela, Aldridge, Horford, Love, Embiid  type.   Unless Kawhi or  George are available.   Quality bigs are in short supply. Plus you are sending a message to the rest of the league that good bigs are disappearing fast.  Let them fight for the likes of Nurkic, Jonas, etc.

You are already strong in percentages and rebounds without obvious weakness  Even if you get poor FT shooter that can be corrected later (see

)

In later rounds target guards and forwards   with good percentages (Jamal Murray, Teague,  Garry Harris , Collison types) and you  have solid foundation to build your strengths toward the end of the draft.

I hate to admit, but Stifle Tower2 did excellent job in H2H mock draft earlier  this summer.

Whatever you do, please do not pick Harden and Drummond.  You have no obvious strength after 2 rounds.  And John Wall is DND for me.  Hurts in TOs, FG% and is injury risk

Always pick the best player available for the first 4-5 rounds - to the degree that they help you follow a particular build strategy. After that, you can fill out any glaring holes in your roster with specialists. For 9-cat, 14 team, I'd go with AD at #1. Right off the bat, you're strengthening yourself in blocks which is one of the hardest cats to find, as well as elite in points, boards, fg% and ft%. For your next pick, I'd try and go for a guard to get you steals and 3s. At #28, you should have some good options. Kemba, Kyrie, Mitchell, Jrue, Booker, Beal etc - these are guys that might be available at the tail end of the 2nd round.
